Juan Martin del Potro says a post-surgery medical examination of his wrist has shown positive signs.

"The doctor is happy with the progress," he said on his Twitter account. "Now we have to keep strengthening [it] and then be ready for the racquet."

Shortly after undergoing wrist surgery in May, del Potro said he would not be able to defend his U.S. Open title and speculated he might not return till November.

Now, he says he may return in time for Argentina's Davis Cup semifinal against France. The tie takes place the week after the U.S. Open, suggesting that del Potro may be able to play at Flushing Meadows after all.

"Davis Cup is a good date for returning to the tour, I hope I can come back sooner," del Potro told Argentine press earlier this week. "I don't want to have any illusions because I don't know when I can return to [playing with the] racquet. But I'll train hard to prepare."

For his sake, I hope he doesn't return too soon.

If he tries to come back and play in the US Open, he would be under enormous pressure as defending champion.

I think he overplayed in 2009, and that led to his wrist problems.

He is a young, strong player. If he schedules wisely, he'll come back when he is truly ready, and not too quickly.

Where does he say he'll return for the USO? It says Davis Cup just like Nalby waited until Davis Cup for his return. That's a lot less pressure than defending the USO.

He won't come back for the U.S. Open, and he shouldn't. He shouldn't take the risk of re-injuring himself, especially when he already did that at the Aussie Open. Hopefully he's learned his lesson and will take some time to heal and then come back full force when his body is ready.

If he continues to bash the ball as hard as he does, his wrist won't last very long. He should learn to play tennis first and then make his return. Just bashing the ball won't get you anywhere.
