A-Rod is really a fighter. He must have tossed his racquet a dozen times inthe 3 set SF win over Berdych. Played a great match, fought like a starved dog for a bone, really played solid smart tactical tennis and got the job done, attacking the net at key times, slice backhand approaches, tremendous defense, breaking down a sharp looking Berdych. Never remember seeing a top 10 player throw his racquet so much inthe SF of a small event, like A-rod, he really really wants a big start to '10 and is putting a lot of pressure on himself to do well early after the downer of his 2009 second half.

His team, Stefanki, Spreen and wife just sit there passive, even maybe ever so slightly embarrassed at his somewhat ugly behavior. It's got to be tough to watch Roddick play over and over, day after day, the guy is so hyper and driven but so ungraceful on the court. Ungraceful compared to others like Federer and Djokovic and Monfils, etc. No disrespect but A-rod does not have an aesthetic game.

You haven't watched a top player throw his racquet so much??I guess you are not a Safin fan then.

    Yeah,what the heck was that????
No racket abuse warning, with almost hitting somebody???
That Steve Ullrich is one of the worst chair umpires you can have.He doesn't do his job at all.Not to say how much Berdych was stolen with some of those calls.
    That was ridiculous.

Safin was not a top 25 player when he was smashing his racquets, he was trying to get back up there. no?

aside from Safin, I cna't think of any top 50 or 25 player who behaved on the court today like A-Rod did,. not criticizing him, it's always good to see a player want it so bad. Good to watch. Actually would like to see Blake want it more.

Safin smashed rackets even when he was top ranked. It had nothing to do with his ranking.

Roddick has never been content with losing, even in an exho.

I remember watching Haas vs Roddick Madrid last year. it was his 1st match on clay of the year, and his 1st match in over a month, and he kept getting angry after every UE.

Safin was the coolest player I have ever seen to play the game. It was hysterical to see him self destruct. Roddick is a spoiled child.

You just have double standards. You are just safin's fan and that is why you could stand to see Safin act like a spoiled tosser on the court but get angry when Roddick acts the same way. I like both Safin and Roddick and both have fiery personalities on court.

I think it's because Safin could get pissed and still maintain a certain coolness. Roddick, not so much.

haha. Welcome aboard. People in the states dont know jack about Oasis.

    Here is a typical response.

    Me: I listen to Oasis.

Fellow American: Oh yeah, they only had one good song called wonderwall, right?

    Me: sigh...

Would you rather watch Robots with no emotion what so ever, hit a ball to eachother?

I watched that match live, had really great 1st row courtside seats, and the atmosphere was amazing. You really felt Roddick wanted to win that match and the emotion he showed is one of the many reasons i always love to see him play.

I watched the Monfils-Stephanek match before hand and it was boring as hell. Sure Monfils was a little funny talking to himself in french, but thats it. It felt as though they were treating it like a practice match, with no real concern for winning it.

Yeah good point, A-rod used tobe rather boring to watch but i was gripped by this match with Berdych. He tries SO HARD, hustles his ass off, shows emotion, throws the racquet down, but at the same time he showed a lot of sportsmanship at the same time, Berdych hit some magical shots and A-Rod applauded each time. But then he'd come right back and battle. A-Rod is such a tough player to play hwo good he is, his serve and HOW HARD he battles for every damn point. His relentless pressure, when he's running on all cylinders, breaks down most players except for Federer it seems.

Roddick is definately a fighter, but Berdych chocked on some easy volleys. Otherwise, Berdych out played Roddick, pretty much the whole match. I don't think Andy can count on top 5 players choking away matches based on his extra efforts.
