Just curious if anyone knows what Roddick has been upto since the SonyEric. Open. With clay obviously being his worst surface by a mile one would think he'd be in some of these warm-up events that the other top 10 players have been playing in or is he just conceeding that he has no chance on clay so why should he even waste his time?

Here is Roddick's clay court schedule right after Miami:

-Go to Wimbledon and practice on grass
-Go to Paris to play the French Open
    -Go back to grass.

:) Why does he even bother? Just skip the French. Make up points playing smaller tournaments.

I want to know why he does this as well, i mean he is poor on clay, but he always seems to not play Monte Carlo, play in Rome and then not Hamburg, but then still go to Roland Garros with only time on practice courts.

that's rather a logical schedule : having a little pizza in rome, then quenching his thirst with a (rapid) glass of red wine in paris... before enjoying wimbledon's strawberries (with cream, i suppose) as a desert. ;)

considering he rarely makes it past the second round (if that) I agree he should just skip the clay season all together, he'd probably make more points playing/winning a few small tournaments.

Actually, no he can't make up points playing smaller tournament, it doesn't work that way. Any player who gets direct entry into a mandatory event and skips that event is zero pointed and not allowed to subsitute points. Top ranked players can only count the results from their five best optional tournaments (and Federer doesn't even play five optionals). Andy manages his clay court schedule pretty well, in my opinion, but I'm not so sure about his decision to play Dusseldorf the week before RG. He always plays Hamburg, I think he's only missed it twice because of injuries he picked up during Rome (since he's not the best clay court mover out there).

Nadal doesn't play any optionals in the US during the summer hardcourt season, but no one ever rides him for it. It's smart schedule management to play where you can get the most points (and the best appearance fees ;) ).

Roddick and Blake had to attend Mardy Fish's bachelor party in Vegas the week of Monte Carlo. And ironically, Roddick gets to play Fish tomorrow - so at least 1 American will get a win in Rome... :)

Andy Roddick is ranked too high to play challengers, but he should be able to play doubles in those events.

    Fee!!!!

I am being lazy again, please let me know if I am off. :)

The Americans are struggling in clay that both Fish and Roddick will lose.

Do you have a paypal account? I need cash for this kind of labor. ;)

Yeah, Andy can't play Challengers, he's ranked too high. I'm sure he wants to get back into the top five, so he won't be giving up too many of these mandatory events this year (and DC won't be an issue like it was late last year).

For Challengers? Off the top of my head no, but give me a minute to check the ATP rulebook, conveniently saved as a PDF file somewhere on my computer....
