so yea, my friend is a professional stringer. He and his brother are both invited frequently to string at major tournaments. i was hanging around his shop the other day and we just started talking. i brought up the pj stuff and we were discussing strings and such when he showed me jill craybas' racquet. it was pretty cool but when i gave it back to him after a looksy, he disappeared to the back and brought out... DUN DUN DUNNNNNN Roddick's Weapon of choice given to him and his brother a while back !!!! here are some pics...

He uses the old butt cap. it says 4 and 1/2 but it feels more like a 4 and 7/8

Roddick uses the reverse side of teh tournagrip cuz it's rougher.

    Length: 27.5
    Weight:11.94 Oz.
    Head: 100 sq. in.
Balance: Even Balanced, almost head heavy.
    Stiffness: 70, the same.
    Beam Width: the same.
Swing Weight: i'm going back tomorrow so i'll try and get him to measure it.

So from what i've seen, it is an off the shelf racquet but it's customized to his liking. The string pattern is the same exact as my Pure Drive+ (as in denseness or openess wutever.)

How long ago was this. I dont see his blue hurricane mains and the tourna seems alittle short for one of roddicks rackets.

That is a old stick. I am going to bet pre US Open win. THe grip and wrighting on the JCS sticker looks like Greg Dixons. He and I were working with JCS at the same time. I Started working with Andy at Davis Cup in Sep 03

Not sure if I'm correct here, but I think the silver and black butt-cap was for the older Babolat models before they updated the appearance of them.

[IMG] The throat is the part that's different now.

i'm gonna be at the Mercedes Benz Tournament at UCLA in about 2 weeks, and i heard that safin and roddick were both gonna be there so i'll try what i can to take pictures.. although i have this feeling that mr marat safin is gonna be knocked out early, ahem, the playboy mansion is within pretty close distance.... LOL

oh yeh, my friend and his brother will both be stringing at Mercedes Benz, i'll try to ask him if he can get something from one of the pros, haha

  24. Cool pictures. You can tell it's an old frame also because the rubber band looks just about shot. What's different about the older butt cap? Is it shaper on the end? The newer one is rounded on the end. Very annoying.

He really is. That is just something he would not pay attention to. Alex Corretja puts his on insid out and overlaps so much it only goes half way up

I went to the same shop (located in Arcadia, CA) and got to hold the racket. The grip is huge, even though its labeled 4. I thought that the stringer dude got the racket from Roddick unstrung and strung it himself? Anyway, nice pics Denty, I mean ABNER, hahaha. Better wake up early tomorrow or else I'm not picking you up to go to Mercedes Benz qualies haha.

You can't get a babolat like roddick's his has a custom molded handle that makes it basically impossible to match a pd+ to it

....nice pictures...the ONLY thing I'm surprised about is that GRIP size.....esPECIALLY because I was born...in Missouri!! I was under the (visual/logical) impression that his grip was very SMALL....look at his service grip and 'usual' forehand grip --- no way does it look like so much of his hand could actually go 'around' the grip if it was that big....VERY surprising !!!!???! Even more surprising....I was assuming that the reason he shanked so many 'do-able' volleys is because of the small grip size; not being comfortable/confident/stable when volleying against a hard hit ball.....I'd DEFINITELY like to swing that stick just to SEE that grip size/shape.....

    Taken from recent Davis Cup.
I believe this picture would indicate that the lead setup has changed.

Your pics show the lead being 2 layers that start in the middle of the second white stripe. This is seen on the Aeropros next to him.
The above photo shows Andy has moved his weight up above the second white Babolat stripe.

I'm surprised the weight is 11.94 Oz. How does that have enough stability for the heavy hitting of the pro tour?

The key is that his swingweight is still probably around 370. The low static weight combined with the almost even balance and high swignweight is the key to a racquet the serves really big. If you gave Sampras Roddick's racquet, he could probably serve 160mph. But Sampras needed more mass for better stability on his volleys, so he preferred to use a racquet almost 14oz.

Oh right I see. Is there a way of increasing swingweight without increasing the mass of the racket?

Only if you can remove mass from one place and add it to another place.

    Yeah I was thinking that.

I don't really know much about swingweight. Is there a formula for calculating it? Does adding a small amount of weight to certain positions on the racket head increase the swingweight quite a lot?

yes it does, i trimmed the bumper on my volkl and it's a lot more headlight, i like it but now it has less power, although i can swing faster. so it's only plastic but on the head a little can do a lot...
