Is it just me or is Roger losing his edge lately? It seems that he was just defeated from the Dubai Duty Free tennis championships by Rafeal Nadal... I wonder if he might lose his #2320 spot this year.

    -sarcasm-

But seriously is there something to make out of this loss? Seems like NAdal went to the ever popular 'attack Federer's backhand' method in the last two sets that worked for Nalby and Gasquet.

Nadal won cos of his willpower....did you watch the 1st set?
Don't think I've ever seen tennis played as good as that before...anyone else and the match wouldve been over in 45mins, tops.

Yeah Federer played perfectly or beyond perfect in the first set, but then Nadal started attacking also instead of simply playing defense which knocked Fed out of rythem, and then Nadal never took his fott off the gas pedal after he started rolling.

Was this match about Federer's first set? No it was about the whole match, yeah Fed played a great 1st set but what is even more impressive is how Nadal came back from such deflating beginning and won. How often does Fed win the first set and lose? If we were to reflect on Fed's 1st set we should also reflect on Bagd Daddy's 1st set in the AO final.

Fed played out of this world in the first set, he was hyped and ready for this matchup since the French Open and he played brilliant tennis in the beginning but Nadal raised his game and took it to him in the next two sets, Fed couldn't bring it up a notch to defeat him. Looks to me like a very strong result for Nadal on hard court (one that will be looked back upon many times) and he is a legitimate opponent on clay and hard court to Federer. He now has his rival. This is what tennis is about, lets enjoy this year and lets hope we get more matchups like this and highly entertaining as well.

Why is it that everytime a top player loses a match, immediately a thread starts with the title - "Is so-and-so losing it?", as if one loss means the end of that player's career?

Sorry about that that's why I put the sarcasm part under it to avoid confusion. I know that Federer isn't losing it but with all of the recent threads about how every person who loses sucks I had to poke fun at it. But what does everyone think about Federer's chances at the grand slam this year? I mean everyone (including me) has been saying that this is the year he takes the French and then dominates Wimbledon and the US Open, now how does everyone like his chances against Nadal and the other top clay courters at the French? I still think that he can take it but it depends on his form during the clay court season.

    Federer "losing it"??

    Don't make me laugh.

OK, Nadal won, I like Nadal (I like the guy and his game) and he deserved the victory.

But JUST WATCH that 1st set. If you enjoy tennis in some way, you got to fall to your knees and give thanks for being able to see this Swiss guy hold a racket. Of course he couldn't play that level in 2nd and 3rd sets (and in front of him was Nadal, the kid that never surrenders and -yes- a great tennis player) but, who could play at that ridiculous level during a whole match? He is Federer, not Superman. He's human... but just plays better than any other human being.

Federer will be remembered as an absolute Genius as long as tennis game exists.

Right on the money! Of course Federer's career ain't over: He'll most certainly come back at age 47 to win a little doubles title! Oh, he's just getting started...

Finally, someone posing some challenge for Federer. I am tired of not seeing some competition in Men's tennis.

What Federer will say: "I gonna whoop your ass bubba!" (Federer talking to Nadal at Wimbledon.

Had this been a best of 5, do you think Fed would have won?

Nadal's game is deadly for Federer because Nadal gives himself so much room for error.

Nadal's lefty topspin can be compared to a kickserve. He also has lots of room for error because the topspin. Also it's not easy to attack at all, and Nadal's ability to flatten out balls when needed is improving, so he can attack when he needs to.

For Federer to win, he'd have to play perfect tennis, and even he has days he's not able to do that.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Nadal's game is so risk free but high quality that this is a deadly combination against Federer. He can chase down balls like Hewitt, but he has the ability to crank it up on his shots and keep Federer on his heels. He has power and weight on his shots and he can defend the court like no one's business. Plus that lefty forehand goes easily to his backhand with that heavy topspin is almost like having a kickserve to his backhand during rallies, Fed's having trouble controlling points most of the time but when he's aggressive and comes to net he gets passed, and often. The point being that tennis is a game of matchups and Nadal's game matches up very well against Fed's.

Such a foolish thread title. Of course he's not losing it, he just won his 7th Grand Slam. He's always had problems against Nadal. He came out in the first set and made Nadal look ordinary. He kept moving to net and being aggressive. He seemed to stay back a little more later on, which was probably a mistake, but it also didn't help that Nadal started hitting the ball harder and with more spin. The next time they meet, I don't think Nadal will win, even if it's on clay. Federer is too good to lose to someone three times in a row like everyone else loses to him.

Is Roger Federer losing it? Definately not. This will make him more determined and stronger.

speaking of that has AA played Nadal? I wonder if he could handle him and how Nadal would react to the ball coming much earlier.

    I bet Nadal would chew Andy's @$$ right up:mrgreen:

AA played Nadal last year in the Montreal final and lost in a tough three setter. Agassi had some problems with Nadal's speed and he said that his left handedness was the biggest problem, I think Agassi would have a higher chance of beating him now because he probably knows how do deal with his game a bit better than he did last year.
