    Promises to be an EPIC!

Their match at Indian Wells brought out some of the best tennis played by either player this year and was highly contested with Rafa winning in three sets after being 2 points away from losing it.

Thoughts? I think this will be a real test of Rafa's level at Rome and will be a good match.

    Rock the vote.

Nadal has not played well since IW. Gulbis has been knocking on the door to beating Nadal for a while now. I say Gulbis in 2.

Nadal is in too good a shape right now (and too confident) to lose to Gulbis. Gulbis had a much better chance in IW and he couldn't do it. He'll do it even less on clay imo.

Not much of a match here. Nadal absolutely trashed Fognini today and is going to destroy Gulbis.

I picked Rafa in three but I think the buzzard forehand will grab a set.

Rafa knows the buzzard will self-destruct at some point.

I will go with Nadalin 3 since Gulbis has usually managed to grab a set from him even on clay, but that could be ended here in Rome with a straights sets win for Nadal. But i willgo with Nadal in 3.

Why not? Gulbis gives Nadal fits and has come very close to beating him more than once. With the way Nadal is playing, Ernie can take him out no problem.

I saw it, and still think Nadal is playing like crap. Fabio hardly put up any fight so it's natural he would lose badly. Nadal still had unexplained brain farts and made goofy errors in that match. Gulbis is also a much better player than Fabio and has more weapons as well.

Before I give my prediction, I'll just remind the premature "Dimitrov is Federer" fanboys about Dimitrov getting raped by Gasquet in straights.

    Nadal in 2.

He "can" but he won't, not on clay. Gulbis is a mug and for sure a clay mug.

I think Gulbis will be happy he made it to Rafa, but I do think Gulbis will fight to win, and not just give up. I think Gulbis is thrilled to play Rafa, and believes that he should be playing players like Rafa. He realizes that he's got to step up, and think its also good for his mental growth. He knows he has to act more maturely than when he plays on center court.

Gulbis likes the big matches against top players. However Gulbis' recent results haven't been good, losing to Haas, Raonic and Monaco.
Nadal has been on the upswing since his comeback and will take this in straights.

I think Gulbis will be happy playing a top tier guy even if he loses. He believes he's at their level. Quite frankly, Gulbis will do well to simply prepare himself for hard courts, which are his favorites. Should he win tomorrow, it's not bad for Rafa as he gets some much needed rest given his clay court season.

He may believe he is at their level but he is not.

Not so. If Nadal loses to Gulbis in Rome it will be bad for Nadal, let's not kid ourselves.

for Ernests to beat an in-form Rafa would be a watershed moment... would indicate he has arrived and is candidate for top 10.

If Nadal loses this by some freak occurence, would it be better or worse for Djokovic? In that case, he'd have a real good shot at the title, but I feel like he has to beat Nadal one more time to put himself in good mental standing for RG.

Surprised to see 40% for Gulbis and 60% for Nadal. I guess as things progress tomorrow we'll see those numbers change dramatically.

yeah, i put the minimum time limit (1 day)... should have made the thread a bit earlier.

anyway, in the event of an upset at least it won't be as bad as the poll on the rosol vs. nadal thread.

haha... he says he doesn't do that anymore...

Should be a good match, but Rafa is too strong, too confident and just too darn good for everyone right now with the exception of one man. And that man's name is not Gulbis.

Two tight, but entertaining sets of clay court tennis today.

I don't see how anyone can lose to a forehand that looks like that.

I wonder if Nadal has it in him to actually attack a forehand with his forehand, instead of trying to break down Gulbis's backhand, whih is a far better shot?

I swear, you can give an opponent the best backhand that will ever exist, and Wozniacki's forehand, and Nadal will doggedly try to break down that backhand.

The "clay mug", 1.0 version, beat Fed and scared the buttpicker to three sets on this very court in 2010, a year considered prime Humbalito. This will be just as close and, praying Bresnik can have a calming mantra on the volative Latvian Lavaman, may end with some Excellence Ernestsian tennis. Gulbis in three!

Nadal is a lefty. He gets way too much credit for "purposefully trying to break down everyone's backhand" when in reality, the guy is simply hitting his cross-court forehand. Is that not the most natural shot a tennis player can play? Righties do the exact same thing because it's the high percentage, natural shot to hit and they get no grief for it.

This is my feeling. Nadal knows Gulbis is a troublesome and complicated player. He said it on a spanish interview after the Fognini match.

I think this will be the time when he will likely pay a lot of attention to his performance. He will compare his results against Gulbis IW. If he can beat Gulbis more solidly and convincingly today it will give him more confidence. He knows that he need top opponents to sharpen his shots, movement and mental strategy. All of those areas need to be scrutinize to allow all of the senses to comeback as close as they once were.

I'm pretty sure Nadal will take this one. The question really is how convincing the win will be. Djokovic now is the target for Rafa if to win FO. He must improve his overall play if to challenge Djoko even on clay.

Whether Nadal has been playing great or not since IW, he keeps on winning. That is because mentally he can raise to the occasion. So you can not judge Nadal that easily. Too many variables make guesses difficult.

    Cheers:)

Problem for Nadal is that the weather in Rome is really bad, its very moist and rainy, that's how he lost to Djoko in Monte Carlo.

I find it peculiar that every clay court tournament except Madrid has had awful wet weather. Is like "HAARP" technology (weather manipulation) is used to make sure the weather is rainy to screw up with Rafas play! Lol! :)
