NID match, question is if Berdych can extend it to 3 somehow and make Nadal even more tired for the final.

Berdych can win a set if he trees for a little while. I don't think he can keep it up though; he never does against Nadal. What I'm wondering is...if Nadal wins two more long three-setters, against Berdych and Federer, would that be better or worse for him going into RG?

It doesn't matter if Nadal plays 3 sets. If he plays Fed on clay he'll destroy him. Nadal owns Fed on clay. I'd be shocked if Nadal loses to Berdych. Berdych is definitely on a mission, and I'd like to see him do better, but as a Rafa fan, I'm not interested in seeing that happen tomorrow.

The last few clay matches between Federer and Nadal have been close. RG2011 could have gone either way the first three sets, Madrid 2011 started off in Fed's favor, Madrid 2010 was two close sets to Nadal, and Madrid 2009 was two close sets to Federer. I think Nadal is further past his prime on clay than Federer is at this point; not surprising as it's hard to keep up playing as the clay GOAT forever. But there is no reason to think Federer can't make it a close match; Federer is also further past his prime on hard courts than Nadal is so their match-up has evened out surface-wise a little bit.

I hope Nadal isn't too tired after all these long matches he's been having. I wouldn't be surprised if Berdych took a set, but I hope Nadal will win in the end. I'm dreaming of a Fedal final :)

No way Nadal beats Berdych unless he steps up his game immensely. He was getting bossed around by Ferrer today, turning that match into a grindathon it did not have to be if only he were more aggressive. The guy was getting pushed back and run ragged on his own serve today. He's playing like crap.

You would have said something similar regardless of how he played, but on this day, you are on the money. That's exactly what happened.

So true. Berdych, more than the other top players has been very strategic. He wants to go higher and he has systematically set about to exorcise his demons. He started with Federer getting that monkey off his back, he's pretty even with Murray. He was serious yesterday with Djokovic, and he's planning on taking Nadal out tomorrow. So serious, in fact, that he pulled out of the doubles with Radek. We are witnessing a new Berdych.

If Rafa doesn't win, and it's doubtful with the way he's playing I want Tomas to win. He has moved into my Top 3 with his determination and seriousness regarding his career.

Scenario No. 1: Berdych hits the ground running, then gets scared, cools off, and loses in the end.

Scenario No. 2: Nadal hits the ground running, Berdych gets scared and loses.

Either way, Berdych loses in straights.

Yes. You have covered both scenarios.

Nadal is just so darn good at absorbing pressure and withstanding tremendous onslaught from his opponent. Sure, there are times he gets manhandled, but his determination is so immense, that he is like a leopard in a tree waiting to pounce on his prey. And when he gets them by the jugular, he rarely lets go.

Also, very few can match his physical prowess. While many want to call him some pusher, Nadal can be very very agressive, and explosive with his attacking play, that even the biggest hitters can get overwhelmed. See the start of the IW final as an example. He knows what he needs to do, if his containing game does not work, he flips the switch and battles with a sense of urgency which makes him very dangerous.

This combination, combined with the heaviest ball ever seen in the sport is why he will win. Nadal wins, possibly in straights. The King is not going down this week.

May have been true in the past, but nowadays is more to do with Nadal's name itself spooking out opponents, who get scared and then lose with Nadal doing very little to make them lose.

While I agree that Nadal has declined, he is not the beast of 2008, I gave you a recent example of what I meant, that IW final. Nadal played amazing in that match. He still has gears that very few can stand up to.

And regarding absorbing pressure, if that Gulbis match isn't the perfect example of that, I don't know what it is. He weathered the storm, and pounced in set 2 and 3. A lesser player would have folded.

sore knees will win through sheer grit and determination.even though his knees are so bad no mere mortal could even stand on them ,the mighty warrior will run around like a scalded cat and hit loopy forehands with freaky spin to the berd brain.

With all due respect to Tomas, he ***** himself every time he sees Rafa on the other side of the court. He'll take the first set then collapse.

Don't mind though, Fed is on form and I have little doubt he'll enjoy a much owed victory over Nads

Nadal can be in the worst slump ever, and Federer can be GOAT'ing, and we all know it will be a routine loss for Federer. See AO SF '12.

Nadal fluked that win(not the first time) against Federer and you know it. I'm sure that Nadal must have now exhausted the amount of times he can get lucky. Fed got this, I'm sure of it

I hope Nadal wins....Berdych is one of my least favorite players. He's boring, he is pale as a ghost, has the worst legs I've ever seen and looks like Amelia Earhardt and seems a bit nasty too.

You cannot be older than 15.

Berdych in straights. I feel like Berdych might GOAT Nadal off the court a la Wimbledon 2010 vs. Federer.

Yes, and nadal lost to the person in my avatar... what are you even trying to say. It is a well-known fact that many of Nadals victories vs RF have been down to Nadal's luck of having a mentally weak opponent- AO 09, W 08, AO 12, Fed could and should have won them all.

The final is on Sunday right? I'll laugh at all your faces then #Newhair #Newfed

I don't like my options in the poll. Why isn't there one for the knees? ie: knees lose in 3. After all, we know he can't lose unless the knees are acting up.

I am totally sober, thanks. And I am also totally right about the way that match went. Nadal was being pushed around by a guy with no weapons because he refuses to be aggressive. If Nadal brought the same game against Ferrer yesterday that he brought in the Acapulco final, that match does not go 3 sets, and does not turn into a Nadal pushfest grindathon that only serves to tire him out and wear down his body. Nadal can do way better than he showed yesterday, and if he doesn't step it up today, he's not beating Berdych.

    This is all quite interesting:

    Saying Fed's mentally weak.

    Laughing at Fed's injury.

Let me guess, only your idol (and we both know who that is) is allowed to be injured and have his losses excused?

Berdych, like Ferrer (on clay) couldn't beat Nadal if his life depended on it. Even if Nadal was passed out on court, Berdych would hit all double faults and somehow lose.

Maybe if he closed his eyes and pretended he was playing Federer he could do it!
