True. I wonder whether McHale could best Errani? She'll probably win her first round match, but Errani's much more the clay expert than McHale, tho she plays the dark horse from time to time, but not usually on clay, I guess.

I don't think Serena will win this tournament, she can be beaten by quite a few players on this slow clay surface (Azarenka, Errani, Sharapova, Razzano, Medina Garrigues...).

What happened earlier this afternoon already at Madrid WTA finals?

Say, isn't the place at number one still possible to be achieved by Sharapova if Williams doesn't go deep enough in the tournament?

Yeah, I don't really see Serena winning this tournament ; probably she'll even give a w/o at some point after some couple matches. The clay there is really slow and in the last 3 to 4 years, she struggles, well, against pretty much everybody in that event... obviously if Sharapova is her finalist she'll win for 100%.

For the form, I see a Serena/Victoria F with Victoria winning it. Victoria sweeps Sharapova in the 2nd SF and Serena sweeps whoever she meets in the 1st one.

Early upsets : Well, all the mindless ball-bashers ; Kvitova etc. who have 0% chance on this particular surface.

I highly highly doubt McHale will get passed Errani. Slow clay courts are Sara's favored surface...and McHale is, well, less than impressive just about everywhere.

    I could, however, see....

    Kuznetsova taking out Radwanska,
    Lisicki taking out Kvitova,
Goerges taking out Azarenka (or at least making it tough for her),
Muguruza vs. Sharapova could be a good one as well -- Garbine has impressed me this year, though I admit I've never seen her play on clay

She played really well there last year and made it to the semis but gave a walkover to Li due to back injury. I thought she was faking but she did get knocked out in the first round at the French so maybe it was true....

interesting that. her sis venus is playing laura robson on monday, and if V wins, then her 2nd round opponent w/b S

i wonder whether V wants to play S enough to do her best to beat Robson ..... expecially since V pulled out of Madrid with a "back injury"

hmmmmmmmmm ... ponderable, tho I cant imagine the world number 21 being willing to lay down to the world number 41 just to avoid a WS confrontation ...

Oudin is a lock for the first round. Half of the sudden death league picked Makarova, so expect her to troll hard. ;)

Oh cool - was hoping someone would start a thread for this, thanks Love Game :)

Really interested to see if Vika tanks this one ahead of RG. Fully expect Serena to win this one though, she's just the best clay court player at the moment.

Although Robson could beat her in R2...

Good to hear Julia Goerges has recovered from her stomach bug to make it to Rome, after pulling out of Madrid:

'On the weekend Julia and her team will travel to Rome. She had some more check ups regarding her stomach at home.It was definitely bad food which has caused her stomach pain.
Julia:" I am very happy about the results. The last week was pretty tough. After all I am just excited to be able to compete in Rome and having the possibility to work more on my game under match conditions."'

Potential meeting with Victoria in R2.

    youre welcome! :)

It kinda seemed that Vika tanked in Madrid, too, but she might need more practice at Rome, espeially if she doesnt want to fall further behind in the rankings.

Robson looked good in Madrid, but it was mentioned that, at No. 41, she doesn't yet have a good record against top tenners.

Too bad she's playing on Court 2, which apparently isnt one of the show courts. Surprising. Shes' currently gonna serve to stay in the match 2-5 after having lost the first sent 1-6 ..... must be a phuysical issue?

She what?! She's beaten Aggy, Kvitova, Clijsters, Na Li, Vinci in the last year. Not all of those are top 10, but in my mind her problem is that she's able to beat the top players, but is so inconsistent that she'll then lose to someone ranked 75 in the next round...

In fact, in the last 12 months she has a winning record (3-2) against players placed in the top 10. So..have some of that :)

thank you for the update :D that's what I get for repeating an atp commentator's assessment.

consistency a definite bugaboo. with consistency dolgopolov could have such a better record. still, dolgo doesnt have the excuse robson does, namely, that she's got so much less history/experience to fall back on when she gets in trouble.

Hope she wins today! :) I'd luv to see her play SW

Well take that list player by player...

Clijsters was on her way out, and her form was not that solid anymore.

Na Li is such a hot one moment, cold the next player that if you wait long enough, the cold version will show up, and almost anyone can defeat her.

Kvitova is a scattered shell of the woman who won Wimbledon--a general mess ever since.

Vinci falling to her is not all that impressive.

Aggi is overrated, despite the ranking.

...but the real test is what she can do against the cream of the crop.

Watching V. Williams/L. Robson right now. 2-1 Robson, the Brit is up a break and serving against the oldest of the William sisters.

3-1 Robson, love break confirm. It's very windy in Rome. It delayed some serves, blows through the mics, clay making dust clouds. And contrary to Ivanovic, Williams seems to have trouble on returns.

Break Robson, 4-1. Robson manages somehow to play with the wind and push Venus on the corners. The American player also does a good bunch of UEs, and her first serve is MiA. A double-fault to hand the service game to Robson, who scores 3 games in a row. Wind seems to trouble Venus big time.

Game Robson, 5-1, Williams to serve to stay in the set. Some UEs from Robson, a bit of better playing for one or two points from Venus to obtain 3 BPs. All erased by Robson, lefty serve out-wide, not a lot of speed but safe given the conditions. Robson cannot continue slicing in the middle of the service box on second serves on the deuce court, Ivanovic guessed it, Williams is starting to guess it, and both hug to the baseline on second serves as a result. Venus just let escape 6 BPs in this game, 8 in total in this set, all saved.

Break Williams, 5-3. As expected, Venus now awaits the slice in the middle of the box on 2nd serves to return aggressively, putting pressure on Robson à la Ivanovic, who has trouble to serve when she sees that. She obtains 3 BPs, one UE, one FE. She eventually converts, for a Murray-like conversion rate: 1 out of 11! Venus fights more with herself and the conditions than with Laura.

First set Robson, 6-3. Seems Robson doesn't want to serve for the set anymore... And Venus helps her with UEs.

Not really - she's just 19, the aim isn't to be able to beat Serena now, that's unfair. She's making progress being able to beat the No. 4 in the world, whoever that is.

I disagree with you on Agnieszka, I think she's a very good player.

Decent win for Laura - nothing spectular but I wouldn't have been surprised if Venus was able to use her experience to come back. Didn't see it though, so really can't comment.

It was not a very good indicator IMO, because the top clay of the court kept blowing around, pretty much from beginning to end. Just bad conditions.

S was there with her entourage, scouting her next opponent!
