Good for Robson, but those second serve sliced in the middle of the service box, especially on deuce court, that ain't gonna work against Serena. Who was watching the match with the rest of the family and her coach.

Interesting. In the case of adverse conditions I would've thought the advantage would go to the more experienced player. Tick for Laura :)

forgot to even check schedule for today, had no idea robson and venus were playing...i guess it was streaming too?...amazing to think venus has slipped so much she'd be playing serena in the second round..after watching serena take her apart in charleston was it, i'm thinking serena is probably not upset she doesn't have to do it again..not that she was rooting against venus

    serena-robson on wednesday i'm guessing?

bertens gave schiavone a tough first set, point for point, up and down. didnt expet that, especially when bertens took the first set in a TB after schiavone had started the TB 4-1

the crowd is sparse, seems distracted. schia might need more crowd spport thatn she's getting now. she's up an early break in the second, but that hasnt meant much so far in the long 67 minute first set.

that would be a disappointment for schia to go out in the first round, especially to a 21-year-old who's total winnings thus far are under $200,000

    1 all in the second

[16] S Stephens (USA) vs. [WC] F Pennetta (ITA)

So Stephens is a SEED and Pennetta is a WC

    Who's gonna win, I wonder?

Why? She's 32 years old and world no. 24 with $28,668,243 career prize money, not to mention all her other forms of multi-millionaire income ... Venus is killing, period! :D

tennistv.com has it in the "catch up" section. you can be a member for $20 per month, then cancel whenever you wish. otherwise, it wasnt a very pleasant match to watch ... a lot of standing around and turning backs to the court b/c of clouds of clay dust flying up ... and that went on throughotu the entire match. very windy. very dusty. no flow to the action.

Thanks, but is it fair that she has to play Serena in next round ? two Williams sisters in a row ? isn't that cruel and unusual punishment ?

that is quite weird, isnt it? wonder when was the last time that happened? cuz if venus had won, she and serena would have faced each other in the second round ... very strange all the way around. doubt that venus let laura win ...

does anybody know the name of the guy who's commenting the wozniacki/jovanovski match? He sounds like Kermit the Frog ... and his comments are some of the dumbest I've ever heard ... yet women's matches always get stuck with him ... the guy who/s doing the Vinci/Vesnina match is so much better, but the women always get stuck with that Kermit/Ernie voiced guy!

Wozniacki...wow! Breezed the first, was 4-0 up in the second, was serving for it at 5-4 and managed to lose. Can't believe it. (Disclaimer: I can totally believe it)

that was excruciating! it's like she didnt want to press her advantage when jovanovski had her thigh wrapped and then had the trainer massagig her thighs on the changeover. omg I fear jov will now continue that hiccup ivanovic type grunt that she turned into a hccup scream for the entire third set ... woz had advice from dad all throughout and she lost. take a hint, caro! apparently she's lost her will to win

    hair styler definitely stylin :D

    stephens d pennetta 63 63

next up for sloane w/b K Bertens ... she's the woman who beat schiavone in straights. She's 6' tall and can give teh smaller player a hard time. I think Sloane s/b able to beat her, but then I thought Schiavone would beat her, too, and she didnt. I think it's gonna be a much tougher fight for Sloane than this one vs. Flavia

At least she had belief for half part of the match. There are many players who feel they are already defeated even before they put their foot on court against Serena.

Well, solid match from Robson overall. She played at her level. But the double-faults in the second set gave the match away. She hasn't enough confidence behind her second serve, which is easily readable by most players of the tour and leads to aggressive returns. Just serving a slice into the middle of the service box won't cut for long, lefty or not. She has to work on her second serves, maybe getting a an even average kicker would already be good for her game. She's too much victim of pressure and stress on her serve. Which is sad, since she blasted some return aces or at least good shots on S. Williams' second, weak serves. Good craft(wo)manship, but her serve is letting her down because of pressure and not threatening enough second serves.

Routine win for S. Williams, who did not play really good, but just good enough on important points to win the match. She did not look good on the court, but it was enough to get past her opponent in straights.

I did not say she played greatly. She played at her level. She stroke few good shots. Good returns, good forehands, takes her chance when she thinks she can by running around her backhand. You can check the stats. But her second serve isn't enough and she's susceptible to pressure on it. It's not like she sprayed the court with UEs, missed incredibly easy putaways or something. A choke job would be Almagro/Ferrer AO 2013. Robson didn't pull stupid UEs besides the DFs, but she's far too weak on her second serves despite a good first serve and that what costed her the match today, or even against Ivanovic last week.

Stop trolling Nostradamus - Laura has lots of potential and showed she could break Serena. But as per usual, her first serve is very inconsistent and her second serve is terrible. These are fixable things, and if she can make progress on these she's easily a top 8 player.

Stephens is relatively unknown to me, as is her next opponent K.Bertens. IOW i know them equally, which means hardly at all ..... Is it Bertens you believe will beat Sloane?

or who? Who do you think Sloane is gonna lose to soon?

Exactly. For the first half of the second set Laura was actually outplaying Serena off the ground. Unfortunately she just couldn't keep it up, got a little loose, and Serena capitalized like a true champion.

Plus, Serena wasn't giving much away. 10 unforced errors in 2 sets is pretty hard to beat. Laura gave it her best for a lot of that match, but just couldn't keep her fire hot enough to compete with Williams.

Laura is a very good ball striker and has a great forehand. In the years to come I think that will develop into a great weapon and she could very well break into the top 10.

well, at least youre honest :???: ..... i like sloane a lot and would luv to see her make it to teh quarters ..... not really believing that will happen, tho, because if sloane is able to overcome bertens, she'd next face the winner of the sharapova/muguruza second round match ... Mug has already won three matches (two qualifiers and johansson first found) here in rome, so she'll either be too tired to beat the fresh second round bye maria, or she'll be in form .....

personally, i'd luv to see sugarpie take a dive, but realistically it's hard to expect that result ..... so the russian sugar would be the one t o meet the American in the third round ..... then young Sloane might be able to prevail if she can somehow perform better on the clay than she did in her straight sets loss to Shara on the hard earlier this year in Miami.

if that were to happen, then Sloane would be into the quarters, facing the 12th seed Kirilenko ... not an easy row to hoe, and in accordance with your wishes, probably sooner than later! ..... oh well .....
