I use the same method of "absorbing" the shot to place a drop shot. I thought that was the only way to hit a drop shot! Is there some other way to just cut down the pace of the ball? Not speaking any short angle shot, but just a plain drop shot.

On a fast paced ball, soft hands are necessary, otherwise you'll send the ball flying out on a volley.

add slice. that'll cut down the pace definitely.

i overheard some of my friends talking saying how one guy served a hard 1st serve and the returner simply chopped straight down at it and had so much backspin that it went over the net, but when it bounced, it bounced towards the net and it was the returner's point.
