Safin at UCLA! (with some pics and videos)

Whee, so now I've met Spadea, Sampras, and Safin at UCLA. Yeah, you high schoolers know you want to come here XD

Safin and his partner (anyone know who that is?) resting (with Kohlloeffel in the background).

    He sees something.

    A low fh.

    Fh volley.

Somehow, I didn't get any decent pics of his bh T_T So I"ll spare you guys the blurriness.

Anyways, here are some videos. (doh, html doesn't work so apparently I can't embed them >_< Well, you guys can just click on the links)

    Volleying
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idpnWp7FhLA

Returning volleys I think. And yeah, I wasn't paying attention to the viewfinder, so he kindna goes off screen XD

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DljMD365YNA

    Hitting practice serves
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=_DKrIob9rv4

A drill- you could hear the sharp swish from his racquet head speed o_o
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=ICpHrSl4_90

Another drill... more of the same, but this time all over the court.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=oU3qdbdc2E0

Anyways, hope you guys enjoyed these pics and stuff. The other ones I took are blurry. And I would've taken more, but I was borrowing my friend's camera and used up all the batteries. So much that when he finished practicing and let us get autographs/take pictures with him I couldn't take it... thankfully, a friendly girl took the pic on her camera for me ^_^

    One question:

In the background it says "UCLA men's tennis 2005 NCAA champions", why does it still say that? :s

Most schools keep those banners up indefinitly. I bet UCLA still displays all their NCAA basketball championship banners.

  8. Wow, two-time GS winner doing drills.I guess we can all learn from that. Gotta keep the skills up!

Marat kicks ***. Come on, Marat. How about you stop the Fed Express at the USO this year? You can do it!

*sigh* my favorite school and my favorite tennis player...i've only hit at UCLA once....it was amazing...playing there just seems to make you play better. Courts are nice and spiffy.

In front of my computer, obviously
The guy sitting on the bench with Marat in the first picture (wearing a nike Tshirt and using the Pacific duffel bag) is Zack Fleishman (currently ranked in the 150's I think).

I knew Marat was going to stay in California after San Jose finished, but I thought he might spend a few days with Dmitry in Nor Cal. Guess he couldn't get any decent practices in up here and had to go find hitting partners down there.

The guy in the background in the first pic looks like last years NCAA champ and UCLA#1 Benjamin Kohlloeffel.

Don't see Chris "the next Michael Chang" Surapol anywhere :D

That must have been a nice experience. Cheers, mate!

Anyways, have you had the chance to see what overgrip he uses nowadays? Some people think it's the Tourna hi-tack, but I think it's Wilson. Just curious.

He's probably making a pit stop in LA before getting ready for the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.

The white grips all look the same to me >_<

Ah, that's good to know. I wasn't paying attention, and I asked him to sign my cap! Afterwards, I looked over past the net, and I see a crowd of people around safin... yeah, I was kindna embarassed. But it's fine, I got safin to sign mine too.

Yeah, I noticed that too! He was doing that a lot... guess he doesn't care when it's just practice?

Yep, that's him. Haha, the next michael chang. I guess they are kindna similar...

Ah, that makes sense. When my friend told me that her friend said safin was here, I was a bit skeptical (I mean, what's a real russian practicing here for o_o). I was so close to assuming he was almost done practicing too... that would have been a sad missed opportunity.

haha, yeah, it's really hard to differenciate white grips unless you touch them. Silly question mine was! :p

Safin tends to not care whether he foot faults or not during practice serves. I saw a couple practice videos from the Thailand Open on YouTube, and he was foot faulting every single time.

I don't see those drills with the tennis balls on the court as a good idea, since you have to keep in mind not to step on the balls. To keep thinking about that takes away from your concenration on the ground strokes.

YAY. I finally saw a pro tennis player here. Safin was really nice about the picture taking and autographs. I saw him today too as I was walking to class (I think he was heading for the courts) but then it started raining.

Actually, right after Safin lost in the quarters at the SAP Open, he said he was going to rent a car and drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) all the way down to L.A. He was even quoted in the paper as saying that. So I guess he kept to his word. Can you imaging running into Safin in a rest room at a rest stop? ;)

I wonder if he stopped into our beloved TW when he passed through SLO?

Dang, rhino, you got some nice pictures!

Looking at them... I remember seeing a guy taking pics with his fingers in the photo measuring his size. I think I sat next to you!

Were you the guy with the black camera? Third row, I believe? The one that I talked to about about how I have midterms coming up but those are every quarter while Safin isn't? The one that was there from 3:50 until the end?

Oh, and I sure hope Fleishman is a good up and coming. Cause then having his autograph on my cap right next to safin's won't be so silly XD

Those pictures are just terrific hawkaboudi. His presence on the court is that of a champion, and if he puts his mind ot it he can win a couple more slams.

    Rhino,

Those are some nice pictures. Cheers, mate!
I love how Marat looks like a little action figure compared to your fingers.

And, we know now that Safin no longer uses Tourna, but Wilson Pro overgrips

I always thought he used leather replacement grips. But, what is that black grip?

Just out of curiosity, besides you two, how many other spectators realized the godly presence on the court? Were there any of the UCLA tennis team players practicing? Did they stop and watch Marat? Did they even know who he is?

I know where you're coming from (lots of clueless on the west coast!), but I betcha Fleishman clued his mates in (hey guys I'll be late for team practice, cuz i'm hitting with this Marat dude that you all probably haven't heard of, but he's the best tennis player in the world).;)

There were about 20-30 (i think?) other people watching and waiting to take pictures/get autographs. If you look in the pictures you can see some of the UCLA men's tennis team practicing on courts 2 and 3; there's even one picture where safin is sitting on the bench and you can see our #1 Ben K in the background.
