Does Jarko have a chance against Marat? Jarko is 1 and 5 against Marat. They played here last year where Safin won in 3 sets. How does Marat match up against lefties?

If Safin continues the way he's been playing, Nieminen will get blown away.

Yesterday, I saw bits and pieces of the match versus Davydenko, and I must say that Safin was bombarding Davydenko with wicked crosscourt and down-the-line backhands the whole time. It was so consistent yet powerful at the same time. Davydenko was getting blown away even though he ran down every shot and succeded in returning many of them. It was just amazing to watch Safin generate such groundstrokes off of that wing.
I must conclude that Gasquet and Safin have the best backhands on tour these days.
Like superman1 said, if Marat plays the way he's playing, he'll have a good shot against Jarko.

Image of Marat during his Moya match

An image of Marat Safin awaiting serve from Carlos Moya during his match on Sunday afternoon. Sorry for the slightly out-of-focus shot. Light wasn't very good this time of afternoon. Shot taken at 5:23 p.m.

You should change your TW nickname from Prince to the Master of Obvious.

Was just looking up Safin's record since winning the Australian last year. Since then he's only won more than 3 matches in a row once(reaching the final in Halle) He's won 3 matches here, I think Jarko is a good bet(he almost beat Safin here last year) Safin's never done well in Indian Wells.
And Jarko is currently #9 in the race, playing the best tennis of his career.

Nieminen is a very solid player, but unless Safin is misfiring badly off his groundstrokes, Safin'll win in straight sets. And the ATP Race really means nothing. The only ranking on that that makes sense is Federer at #1.

I should have gone with Jonnie Jarko. You never know what you're going to get with Safin. At lease I got Srichaphan 2-1 over Nalbandian right.

Nieminen is the greatest pusher I have ever seen on a tennis court besides Lleyton Hewitt.

Thanks for that article pound cat. Indeed, Safin is a highly talented and gifted tennis player albeit an extremely complex human being. He is capable of absolute brilliance and will to win but can also turn around and commit the most vexing acts that leave his fans puzzled and frustrated, and I count myself a fan.
I hope he can get his head together and play brilliant tennis more consistently than he has.

Niemenen is a pretty smart player... he's agressively consistent. His problem is his size. Has to take big risks to make a decent winner, even when he's swinging pretty hard, it's just a normal paced ball. Consistency is good though, he knows when to hold back, and I bet these kind of guys frustrates Safin 'cause you end up making more unforced errors and getting down on yourself.

I didn't know Safin grew his hair long. I personally reckon he looks best with hair like this:
