I've allways wondered why Sampras made so much more money than Agassi.
Right now the difference still is 14000.000,- US dollars, how's that possible?

sampras won many more majors than agassi, and finished number 1 many more times, as well. thus more prize money. if greatest were measured by making tv commercials, agassi would surely be the king.

    djones,
I thought the big prize$ difference between the 2 was surprising as well. Yes, Sampras does have a big lead in majors(which have the most prize money) but Agassi has more masters series & isn't far behind in total titles. I think Sampras' 5 masters titles (as opposed to Agassi's 1) are also a reason, they are big money events.

Agassi will make 40million in endorsements next year. And people wonder why he doesn't retire?

And his career prize money is only 29 mill. Endorsements are where the money is, not prize money. Jordan used to make much more that in endorsements when he was playing for the Bulls.

Also thought it was interesting that Agassi has more match wins(808) & total matches played(1058) than Sampras(762 & 984)

Pound Cat, Agassi could retire tomorrow & still make millions in endorsements for many years, they have nothing to do with why he is still playing. Michael Jordan is retired & is still making a ton off endorsements.

if agassi had sampras s slams, year end #1's, and his place in history solidified, like sampras, he probably would be retired.

    jjames,
you don't think Agassi has his place in history "solidified?"
He's accomplished virtually everything there is to do in the game, I don't think he continues to play the game in order to match any of Pete's accomplishments, but plays because he loves to play & can still play at a high level.

    kevin,

i think its obvious andre want s another slam badly, preferably a us open. 2 us opens, 1 wimby, 1 french, 5 aussie is very good, and only one year end #1 ranking . the aussie is a tournament many greats have skipped, and thats were andre has shined . does this put him in with the best of the best statistically. probably not. i think andre feels he needs to leave the game in style to keep him in the conversation of being one of the top 5 or so of all-time greats.

He is very near top 5 of all time right now already, IMO. If he wins one more slam, then he's definitely in...maybe even #4 (after Sampras, Laver, and Borg).

sort of funny how "majors" are now called "slams"(implying grand slam)sometime even "grand slams", and winning "majors" is now more important that being ranked number 1. sort of a recent phenomena. kind of discredits rod laver who actually won the grand slam, and lendl, connors, and j mac, who were number 1 for the year 4 or 5 times. think a lot of the players pre-1990 skipped the australian altogether, borg and connors for sure. connors even skipped the french for 5 years.

heres what lendl said he said the biggest achievement is the grand slam winning all majors in one year. the second biggest acheivement is winning al the majors in your career and he said thats why he would put agassi ahead of himself in greatest list of all time. only agassi and laver has done this, even sampras didnt win the french. now if somebody wins 10 wimbledons and no other majors is he one of the greatest of all time ? im not saying sampras isnt the greatest but im saying not winning that french makes his greatest of all time label arguable. agassi won on all 4 majors, hes won the masters, lipton, indian wells, olympics, more masters series tournaments then anyone, he's pretty much won everything there is to win at least once, so mabye he has a better career then sampras, and by the way, agassi is still going too !

Also add Agassi's 30-5 record in Davis Cup vs Sampras's 19-9 (singles 15-8 doubles 4-1).
