    I've got my tickets and I'm ready to go. I'm really looking forward to watching Safin play.

    And does anyone know if they're allowing people to watch the qualies at los gatos like they did last year? What time will the matches start?

    Interesting that Safin is even playing in this tournament. Why not Marseille? I mean, it's more money, he lives in Europe... what gives?

    Is he playing SAP because the field is a tad softer?

    You should be able to watch the qualies on Sunday, but not on Saturday.

    I'll be there all week, if I'm lucky I'll actually get to watch some tennis. ;)

    He's playing the SAP because I assume they are paying him more in appearance fees.

    Huh? Why would a Davis Cup tie between Russia and Chile be played in America? If you mean in Chile, that's not very close to San Jose.

    Safin will be in Chile, so there is speculation amongst his fans that he chose to play in California since its a little bit closer than going back to Europe. I'm sure the appearance fees didn't hurt either. I think he's going to play Las Vegas too, then Indian Wells. Kind of an American continent mini tour.

    SAP pre-qualies feb5-9, at the sunnyvale tennis center (free).
    Usually no public viewing at los gatos - courtside club, only two indoor courts for the qualies and area inside is so small.

    Not on Saturday when they use all three courts, all day long, but on Sunday, they set up chairs and let the public in to watch the final round of matches.

    Any TTW members going to the SAP?

    Any other TTW members attending the SAP in San Jose?

    I'll be going to one day session and one night session. My wife is going for the entire week's worth of day sessions...

    P.S. I sure hope that Blake, Roddick, and Safin don't drop out because of the short turnaround from their Davis Cup matches - I would think that Davis Cup would take more out of the guys than regular tournaments

    Safin better not drop out, he's the reason I committed to the whole week this year instead of just the weekends. I want to see him play in person just once in my life. He knows he doesn't have to play until Tuesday, so he should make it. Same with the US team, they will probably have their own plane, and will arrive some time on Monday I suppose. They both play on Wednesday night, so they should be okay.

    My high school tennis coach is taking me on Friday 16th (quaterfinals?). I'm going to the evening match. Hopefully it's gonna be Safin vs. Blake.

    That would be a great match to see! But I just took a look at the draw, and Safin-Blake wouldn't happen until the semis on Saturday.

    http://www.sapopentennis.com/ftpuploads/Singles_Draw.pdf

    I'm going Thu night (2nd round); the best-case matchups are Roddick-Querrey and Blake-Karlovic...

    "Americas" is not a continent. It's two continents: North America and South America. (BTW, your original post said "America" and not "Americas" anyway.

    And, yes, "America" is only the USA. That's why it's called the "United States of America". Can you name another country that has the word "America" in it?

    Probably being a featured player in this tournament will buy a couple of pairs of jeans.

    And as someone said, easy access from Chile.

    Also there is a great match tonight, on first day. Sam Querry Vs Paul Goldstein. Sam Querry is thought upon by USTA as the next great player that USA will produce. He could be next goran Ivanisevic with better groundstrokes. You will see his talents clearly tonight.:D

    I'm volunteering at the night sessions on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week. They give you a pair of tix for each shift you work, and I got tix for Friday (day and night) and Saturday (day).

    During the volunteer meeting, the director of the tournament (I think) said that they put together a package deal with the SAP Open and a tourney in Vegas in order to get Safin to show.

    I checked it out (on the home page of sap) and they wanted my credit card # before they said how much it is. Then I e-mailed them to ask about how much it is but ...no reply. Someone I know subscribed to it... seems she had to get it for the whole week and it cost $9,00 a day! i think that's what she said...she was a bit confused by what she had just done. Best to stay away from it until you see more reports from subscribers (if they get any ) ..re" quaity of stream..blurry? jerky? buffering probs.

    Thr nest live stream was Kremlin Cup and it was absolutely free and perfect.

    (see the link to the article ((ab0ve)) ) that explains how Safin happened. What the tournament director likes about Marat is "He's not only a great player and entertainer, but he's nuts, just like me" LOL

    It does say he won two Grand Slams. You just have to read more carefully.

    "More than six years removed from his eyebrow-raising victory over Sampras in the 2000 U.S. Open final,........

    Why so much effort for a player who has won only one Grand Slam tournament since his breakthrough against Sampras and is ranked 24th in the world?"

    So he won one more GS after his first GS at the 2000 US Open against Sampras. That makes two total.

    Canada is in North America. As are the USA and Mexico. But if you just say "America" it is assumed you mean the United States of America. If you don't mean USA, you must specify North America or South America because they are separate continents.

    Yes, they are. Ever hear people refer to the "Seven Continents"? They are Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, North America and South America.

    Look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent

    Then why do people everywhere around the world call us "Americans"? Do they call Mexicans "Americans"? Do they call Argentinians "Americans"? When Osama Bin Laden says he wants to kill "Americans", is he trying to kill Colombians, Venezuelans, Chileans, or Brazilians? If so, why did he launch attacks only in New York and Washington, D.C. on 9/11?

    Here's a tip:

    America = USA
    Chile = Chile
    Mexico = Mexico
    Brazil = Brazil
    Canada = Canada
    Argentina = Argentina
    Peru = Peru
    etc.

    When people in the movies say - "I'm going to America", are they headed to Ecuador? ;)

    Hey BP: the point is that different cultures have different conceptions of "mapping." As an American, I was surprised when I was in Europe and was told there were only 5 continents. But you eventually learn to see the world with a different set of eyes. It's kind of a fun mental excercise.

    Moreover, "America" signifies multiple geographic spaces. It's often short-hand for "the USA", but a lot of people use it to mean both North and South America. This tends to differ by language and culture.

    OK, but I guess the confusing thing is that "Americans' are only people from the USA but that "America" can be more than just the USA in some cultures. Way too confusing, if you ask me. ;)

    Well, perhaps it just became easier over time to call us Americans instead of United Statesians?

    Interesting info in these posts, thanks everyone. :)

    ROFLMAO, good one :D. I didn't realize this was a point of contention. I always assumed that kids all around the world are taught in 3rd or 4th grade geography that there are 7 continents.

    It was bad enough that they downgraded Pluto. Our very eager mothers can't serve us nine pizzas anymore ;).

    Hi BP - Actually, they do give you a pair of tix per shift you work. I signed up for 3 shifts, and I have 3 pairs of tix in my hot little hands. This may have changed from past tournaments (or it could be a mistake), but I'm not complaining! I'll check with the other volunteers tonight to see if they also got pairs of tix.

    My free tickets are on the 2nd level, but the arena is so small it doesn't matter. I actually got a better view when "working" last night (sec 102/103) than I'll have when I use my tickets (sec 214). I say "working" because I basically looked at people's tickets to see if they belonged in that section and ended up watching the matches most of the time.

    Maybe tonight will be more busy. I'll certainly be on the lookout for flying racquets, as Safin AND Murray are playing tonight!
