I just saw in the draw that a player from Thousand Oaks, CA, where i used to live, made it through the qualifying draw into the main draw of SAP OPen. The player is Sam Querry. I think he's 18 years old, 6ft 5in, lefty, redhead. He beat Amer Delic in the qualifying, 6-7, 6-4,6-4. Then won in the qualifier round in straight sets to make the main draw.

This guy is good and i've always thought he would make it as a pro. I'd say he has a shot to win his first round match against Vinny Spadea, unlikely, but if he is feeling the serve, he can hold for the whole match. Then with agassi out, who knows, maybe he's got a shot against Scoville.

    Interesting for sure!! Go Sam!!!

Just noticed that Sam beat Guillermo Garcia Lopez (6-3,6-4), semi finalist in Delray with win over agassi, in a challenger last week in Dallas. He doesn't show any ranking points but should get one for making the main draw this week.

I really didn't see veteran like Spadea losing to Querrey. He has played plenty of big hitters before and just has too much experience and consistency for a rookie like Querrey. Still it is a good result for Sam getting through 3 tough qualifying matches and bodes well for his future since he is still young.

I also noticed that jenkins lost to lucky loser Travis RETTENMAIER.

I've not seen him play. Does he hit everythihng big? It does look like a good start for his pro career that he made through the grind of qualifier instead of via a wild card.

    joachim totally holding back

just got back from sap open monday night....i swear joachim johansson was holding back so much....sure he played good but against a guy like warburg, i expected him to demolish him....joachim never moved the feet, and the few points he did it looked like warburg saw a ghost moving on the court

    good win for warburg though...

    Holding back?

"Playing badly" is the more common term. "Holding back" implies he's intentionally playing worse than he could, which I am 101% sure is not the case.

He's been out for months. If you were expecting him to "demolish" *anyone* in the top 100 in his first match back, you're delusional...

I don't know why people have problems giving credit to Warburg. He didn't play poorly. He hit a ton of first serves in and made Johansson hit a lot of balls.

Now, if you want to talk about that second match...Fish vs. Murray...wow...Fish really stunk up the place. (Pun intended) ;)

Sets won by newcomers in Pro Tennis:

    Donald Young = 0
    Sam Querrey = 1

    Correction, Sam is a righty.

Brian Wilson beat Karlovic today 7-6, 7-6.

Wilson was part of the powerhouse Univeristy of Illinois team with Rajeev Ram. Good win for him.

Roddick beats Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3,6-4. He was broken in the first game of the first set, but broke back immediately. Then in the second set he had to save a lot of break points.

Looks like James Blake just lost the first set to Jimmy Wang, 6-3. Quite a surprise. Is there an upset in the making?

    Did you see the match?

How did Andy play? Was it closer than the score indicates, or was he mostly in control?

...I suppose you did say he was broken once in the first and faced lots of bps in the second, so that means that he wasn't really in control... still, would be nice to hear updates on how his game is ;) whether it's any better than it was in Davis Cup, or not yet.

Well, apparently my sports channel has seen fit not to give us any tennis for the whole month of February  so I had to make do with livescoring and some articles. AndyRoddick.com has an utterly cheesy Valentine's Day take on the match (excuse me while I shudder). Here's a CNN:SI article where there's little to no slavering. ;)

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/tennis/02/15/bc.ten.sanjose.ap/index.html
Roddick opens SAP Open with another win
Approach different, but results the same for Roddick

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Andy Roddick changed his coach and his wardrobe. The results were the same in the first round of the SAP Open.

Seeking his third straight victory in the event, the top-seeded Roddick beat Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday night.

"He kind of wrapped some presents for me and handed it over," Roddick said. "I was average in most regards, but a win is a win. I feel like I'm on the verge of playing well."

    [...]

Roddick brought his new coach, older brother John Roddick, to San Jose and sported a special red shirt for Valentine's Day. Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson also was on hand to watch the match.

"I've been lucky enough to learn from people who are very educated as far as tennis goes," Roddick said. "It's nice to be in a comfort zone, and the stability with a person I've know so long. He's not afraid to get into me or give me his opinion."

With the first set at 2-2, Roddick questioned a line call that put him behind 0-15.

"For sure, 100 percent," he told the chair umpire. "I'm not really questioning it. I'm telling you you're wrong."

Roddick went on to win the next six points and began to play more aggressively.

He questioned another line call down 0-30 in the eighth of the set. He won four straight points and went on to win the game and go up 5-3.

Roddick, who has won 11 straight matches in the tournament to improve to 15-2 in the San Jose event, opened the next game with three aces -- he had six in the match -- and went on to seal the first set.

The second set was more conventional, with Roddick breaking serve in the ninth game and securing the win despite a double fault.

"I was able to get it up the line and put it where I wanted," Roddick said of break point. "I knew the match was on my racket at that point. It felt good to get through the match, to kind of grind."

I saw his Davis Cup play, but I can't make any comparison, as I couldn't view it today.

But I'm so happy he won today. He worked hard over the weekend, and it was great to see him pull out the win.

Just checked the web site. Not sure how often they update the live score, but it looks like Flipper and Rebredo are still going at it. Split the first two sets.

Article on ATPtennis.com said Mac dug out of 15-40 once and 0-40 later.

Great win against #2 seeds. He and Jonas might even win another match or two.

Roddick dropped the second set against Kenneth Carlsen (1-6) but went on to win the match anyway.

BTW Carlsen was wearing a pink Lotto shirt, like Hrbaty's. I don't know if they had the holes in the back.

Roddick's playing Phau right now, and he's actually looking like a confident baseliner again. Granted, his opponent is probably helping his confidence. But Roddick is actually hitting his backhand better--the slices are sticking, the topspin shots are deeper or hit at better angles, and the returns are hit with more authority.

Looks like he'll play MUrray tomorrow--looking forward to that one.

Andy Murray vs. Andy Roddick head-to-head:
    0-0

This will be their first career meeting. I don't know about you, but if Roddick can lose a set to Kenneth Carlsen and go out in the first round of the US Open to Gilles Muller, the unknown quantity Murray may legitimately pose a threat to him. Hopefully Roddick can make some forcing plays against Murray and take charge of their match; today's match with Phau he just was content to rally.

    By Darren Sabedra, Mercury News

Murray didn't have the easiest of matches Friday. Exhausted from a victory against Wang Yeu-Tzuoo a night earlier, he got off to a sluggish and frustrating start. Murray was assessed a code violation for an ``audible obscenity'' early in the match.

But things turned around five games into the second set when, with Soderling serving at 30-40, Murray chased down a shot deep into the corner and hit a crosscourt forehand winner to pull to within 3-2.
``Last night took quite a lot out of me,'' Murray said. ``I wasn't really moving my feet for quite a lot of the match.''

Murray was moving his mouth, though, which did not sit well with Soderling. He complained to chair umpire Norm Chryst that Murray was celebrating before some points were done.
``I asked Norm if he could do that. He said, `Yes,' '' said Soderling, ranked 97th. ``To me, after the umpire made his call, he could cheer as much as he wants -- not before that.''

Murray could remember just one time that he talked before the end of a point.
``I played a forehand drop shot, and he just picked it up and, as I hit the ball, I said, `Yeah.' If I had missed that, I probably would have stopped playing tennis -- it was that easy of a shot,'' Murray said.

Murray, the first teenager from Britain since 1974 to finish a year in the top 100, offered no apologies.
``You don't really enjoy it because it's another player you're probably not going to speak to very much after matches like that,'' Murray said. ``You don't want to be unpopular on the tour. But when you're on the court, you just have to do what you have to do to win.''

Murray is winless in three previous matches against top-10 players, losing in straight sets to Roger Federer and taking Marat Safin and Ivan Ljubicic the full three.

Asked about playing Roddick, Murray said: ``I'm not going to have much chance of winning. He's got probably one of the best three serves in the game. I'm going to try to play my game and try not to get nervous.''

Hewitt looked good, very consistent and moved and served well. Only two "Come on's" throughout the match, it was that easy. Spadea was down on himself from the beginning, tossed his racquet around several times, but he did play a few great points.
