I played a match recently against two delightful opponents. Good tennis, good times. We won the first set and bageled them in the second set.

We came to the net, and I shook hands with one opponent. The other opponent hung back around the service line, so I held out my hand and smiled at her. She said something I couldn't hear. I said, "Pardon?" She said, "Oh, I don't shake because I lick my hands during the match."

It's official. Now I've seen everything.

I'm just glad she told me after the match. It really would have messed with my mind if she told me beforehand. I wouldn't have been able to take my eyes off of her.

If that grosses you out, then I don't want to bring it to your attention that the hand she licks is the same hand that handles the tennis balls that you all shared. I just won't mention it.

Too bad you aren't a guy. You could've responded, "That's ok, I have Schweddy Balls."

I've seen players lick their racket hands, but never their tossing hand.
Lately, with winter almost here, most player's touch rackets, not hands. You can always claim you have a bad cold.

And neither should you mention that the balls were lodged next to her upper thigh

Licking, or blowing on your rackethand, moistens the palm, which give better grip in courttemps around 50 degrees, and low humidity.
Not sure if that works in hot weather or the eastern seaboard.

Hands are just dirty when a match ends and after the multipe handshakes no matter what. Licking them can't make them any worse than going to wipe them multiple times on a towel or breathing into them.

The point isn't that I worried her hands were too dirty for me to touch.

The point is that she is ingesting all manner of things that aren't healthy. You know, like the dog crap that clung to someone's shoes and is now on the court and then on the ball.

It would be like if someone went up and licked the net. Ewww.

    Picky, picky...
The net is relatively clean, since dog poo doesn't go from ground to shoes to court to net, unless you walk on your netcord.
Lots of weirdo stuff can be eaten without trajedy. Dog poo isn't too far off the beaten list.
Lots of animals are known to eat dirt, to aid digestion.
    Some animals even eat plants!
Can you really save the world from itself?

I do not think it is healthy to lick your hands during a tennis match.

I hear ya. There's better ways to moisten your hands or get a tacky type grip. Blowing in your hand, a tacky overgrip (Solico's is the best), that sticky spray sold by Prince, etc. Licking the hand over and over is nasty.

In a nasty sort of way. :)

Nah, I'm just kidding. She was utterly normal, except for the licking.

Funny thing, though. In a changeover, she said she remembered that we played against one another in a mixed match this winter.

I'm pretty sure we shook hands.

Is that "normally" cute or "normally" ugly?--guys have different parameters for assessing looks. I'm still up in the air on the hand licking--depending.

It'll come to be that, after the final point, all the players will pull out a rubber glove and slip it on, preparing for the post-match handshake...

Next time just suggest a friendly bro-fist instead of the shake. Unless she licked her knuckles too...

We should not be so germ-a-phobic. A little spit isn't going to hurt you. Baseball pitchers lick their fingers all the time and the catcher and other players handle the ball. I am sure the pitcher doesn't wash his hands before he shakes hands with teammates at the end of the game.

Why? Habit, or did you feel it increase your grip? Just curious.
