After this weekend there is a clear pecking order in each division.

    East:
    1: Georgia/Kentucky - they play March 30th in Athens
    3: Florida
    4: Tennessee
    5: Vanderbilt
    6: South Carolina

    West:
    1: Mississippi St
    2: Ole Miss
    3: Auburn
    4: LSU
    5: Alabama
    6: Arkansas

Miss State ahead of Ole Miss by virtue of beating them in Jackson, MS early this year 4-2. They play again in the regular season finale on 4/14 in Oxford.

Do the SEC divisions mean anything in tennis?

Do only a certain number of teams make it to the SEC team championships from each division, or something like that?

The divisions really don't mean anything for tennis anymore. I'm just so used to seeing them spread out for football that I listed them that way. All 12 teams make the conference tournament and the top 4 overall, based off conference record, get a 1st round bye. It used to be the top 2 from each division got a 1st round bye.

    Cocks 4 Tigers 3

South Carolina gets the 4-3 win at Clemson winning a 3rd set tiebreak at #2. I'm sure Clemson Tennis will have a good breakdown of the matches for us.

    Pretty light weekend -

Auburn is at Central Florida today
Ole Miss goes to Pensacola to play D2 West Florida on Saturday
Alabama is at Miami, FL on Saturday
    Tennessee hosts Baylor on Saturday
South Carolina hosts the College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina on Sunday
Arkansas hosts Wichita State on Friday and Southern Miss on Sunday

I doubt UCF or West Florida have live stats either so that UT/Baylor match and Alabama/Miami match are the only competitive ones of the weekend.

i'm not 100% convinced that baylor is going to make the ncaa tournament this year

they should drop well out of the top 40 with three straight losses assuming they don't beat UK

and their remaining schedule has at least a few more losses coming their way, after they play two teams more at their level (prairie view a&m and abilene christian)

Anyone think the UF men have a shot at any line against USC tomorrow in LA?

If Newman is healthy, I normally like his shot at 4 or 5. Alford has been pretty good at 6. Those are the only two that strike me as being top tier players at their positions, but let me know if there is any other spot I should be optimistic about.

If Tripper Carleton plays the way he played against Doumbia & Domijan he most definitely can beat Sarmiento or Nguyen. I'd gave Sliliam a decent shot against Nguyen or Sarmiento as well. Outside of those 2 it'll probably be tough sledding .

Very odd scheduling this week. Instead of the usual 2 home or 2 road matches each team has 1 of each. Must be some reason they do it this way.

    Bulldogs vs Buckeyes

Hoping for a good one tomorrow in Athens. Weather is supposed to be sunny and 80 degrees. I'm taking the day off from work and heading down to see this one.

    Georgia/Ohio State Preview
Lineups based upon most recent lineups that each school played. Ohio State is obviously very very good at doubles so I really don't expect to see us win this point.

    Doubles
    #1 Rola/Buchanan vs Tabodoa/Pieters OSU 8-4
    #2 McCarthy/Van Engelen vs Pasha/Doumbia OSU 9-7
    #3 Smith/Kobelt vs Spencer/Singh UGA 8-6

Ohio State has been flipping both Rola/Buchanan at 1 & 2 and Van Engelen/McCarthy at 4 & 5 so it'll be interesting to see how Ty puts them out. I'd like to see Manny put Sadio back at 1 and let Spencer play 2. Sadio's only loss at 1 came against Steve Johnson and it was a tight match at 6-4 7-5. I think for Georgia to have any chance they've got to get a win at either 1 or 2. If we put Spencer/Singh 1 & 2 we'll probably lose both. Doumbia/Spencer/Singh at 1,2,3 could get us 2 of 3. We'll see.

Singh or Doumbia should handle Kobe at 3 unless he's blasting aces left and right. Pasha/Smith should be a tight one at 6 - I'll go with Pasha. It was nice to see Pieters win the Ole Miss match to gain some confidence but it was against Ole Miss's #6. Beating someone the caliber of McCarthy would be a really good win. I'll say Ohio State pulls it out 4-3 with McCarthy clinching it. Hope I'm wrong though

    Singles
    Rola vs Spencer – Rola 4-6 6-4 6-3
    Buchanan vs Singh - Buchanan 6-4 6-4
    Kobelt vs Doumbia – Doumbia 6-3 6-3
    Van Engelen vs Tabodoa – Tabodoa 6-3 3-6 6-4
    McCarthy vs Pieters – McCarthy 7-6 3-6 6-3
    Smith vs Pasha – Pasha 6-4 7-5

Great win today for Georgia. It was a hard fault battle that could have gone either way and it looked like Ohio State was going to pull it out when Connor Smith went up 4-2 in the 3rd but Pasha was not to be denied. I'll put together a more detailed recap sometime tomorrow.

    UGA/OSU Recap

Here is the TopDawg recap of yesterday's great win over The Ohio State. This is a long one so buckle up:

The day started out overcast but the sun came out about 30 minutes after doubles finished. Temperature was about 80 and it was fairly humid. I sat between courts 2 and 3 which gave me a view of all courts except for 4 – could only see about half that court. I was able to use my new video camera to record a few parts of the match. I was trying to watch and record at the same time so there times when it wasn't a great picture. I also learned how to upload something to youtube so it was a good learning experience.

    Player Intros

Ohio State was stronger at doubles which wasn't a surprise
#1: Rola/Buchanan 8-3 over Pieters/Taboada. Rola/Buchanan were never in trouble in this one. Taboada double faulted 3 times in his opening service game and that kind of set the tone for Georgia.
#2: Pasha/Doumbia 8-7 (0) over Smith/Kobelt. Pretty even matchup – Smith/Kobelt went up an early break and led 5-2 before Pasha/Doumbia rallied to even it up. Georgia’s pair had several break point chances before finally converting. When Ohio State won at 3 to clinch the point it was 6-5 OSU in a changeover and I thought they might stop it. Ty Tucker was trying to get Manny’s attention to see what he wanted to do but Manny never looked in his direction so they kept playing.
#3: McCarthy/Van Engelen 8-6 over Spencer/Singh. The Buckeye pair played better than Singh/Spencer. Singh double faulted a good 4 or 5 times during his services games and didn’t volley very well either. There were a handful of breaks but Ohio State got the last one.

Ohio State came out strong in singles at the top of the lineup by going up an early break on all 3 top courts. Georgia went up a break at each of the bottom 3. Match breakdowns:
#1: Blaz Rola/Wil Spencer – Rola won 6-3 6-2. Rola played the match on his terms and pretty much pushed Spencer all over the court. Rola was much more aggressive and was hitting the ball flat and with great accuracy. It seems like Wil kept waiting for Blaz to make a mistake and it just didn’t happen. Disappointed that Spencer couldn’t put up a better result. He hasn’t regained his confidence that he had back in the fall. He needs to find a way to string some wins together to build that confidence and it may take him dropping down and playing a few matches at 3 to do so. I honestly didn’t watch much of this one because it was pretty clear that Rola was going to roll from about the midway part of the 1st set.

#2: Chase Buchanan/KU Singh – Singh 7-5 6-4. Very tight contest between 2 evenly matched players. Chase had the better resume going in and I thought he’d get the W but KU was flat-out the better player yesterday. There were several overrules by the umpire going both ways. Chase benefited from an overrule on the opening game of the match when KU called one out on double break point with Chase serving at 15-40. KU had picked up his towel and made it up to the net when the umpire overruled. From where I sat I thought the ball was good and the overrule looked like the correct call. Chase ended up holding and then went up a break. During one of the changeovers early on KU took a medical timeout and had the trainers working on his lower back for several minutes. Not long after that KU really starting hammering his forehand and serve and started hitting winners left and right. Chase seemed to get rattled from a few close calls that didn’t go his way and he lost his composure. He started playing some balls that looked to be well out for fear of another overrule. On the 2 overrules at the end I thought the 1st was a good call but I didn’t get a good enough look at the 2nd. Even though this was Georgia’s first singles win of the day I think it was the most important since it was a court that many didn’t think we’d win.

Video of action on courts 1, 2, & 3 including match point on court 2 around the 7 minute mark including the less than pleasant handshake between Chase and KU.

#3: Peter ‘Kobe’ Kobelt/Sadio Doumbia – Sadio 6-3 6-7 6-1. I came away from this one very impressed with the 6’7 Kobelt. He has an Isneresque type of frame (probably 180 lbs soaking wet) and type of game – a big serve, a big forehand, and good touch at the net. When he was popping that 1st serve he was doing well; when he started missing 1st serves he ran into some trouble. Kobe was up 3-1 in both the 1st and 2nd sets before Sadio Doumbia starting serving better, returning better, and moving Kobe around the court. While Kobe has those Isner weapons he also has some of the same weaknesses – doesn’t move too well and wasn’t the best returner of serve. Once Sadio figured out how to get the Kobe serve back in play (stick racket out and block it) he was able to get Kobe in some long rallies and the longer the points went the more the match tilted in Sadio’s favor. The last set went pretty quickly.

Kobelt service game midway through the 2nd set

#4: Ille Van Engelen/Ignacio Taboada – Nacho 6-2 7-6. Didn’t see much of this match due to where I was sitting. After winning the 1st set 6-2, Taboada went down 2 breaks in the 2nd before winning 4 straight games to get back on serve.

#5: Devin McCarthy/Hernus Pieters – McCarthy 7-6 6-2. These 2 had very similar games – McCarthy seemed to be a little more consistent though. Hernus was up a break on 2 different occasions in the 1st set but Devin got them both back shortly thereafter. If I’m not mistaken Hernus had a couple of set points on Devin’s serve at 5-4. In the tiebreak Hernus led 5-4 before Devin reeled off 3 straight to take the breaker. Losing the set took the wind out of Hernus and he faded in the 2nd. Devin went up the early break and never looked back.

#6: Connor Smith/Nathan Pasha – Pasha 7-6 3-6 6-4. Back and forth match. Pasha was the harder hitter but Smith stayed the course and had his chances. Pasha bolted out to a 5-2 lead in the 1st set before Smith came rolling back to win 4 straight games. Smith was serving for the 1st set up 6-5 and led 30-0 before Pasha came back to break and eventually take the set in a tiebreak. Pasha broke to start the 2nd set and then had what had to be at least a 15-20 minute service game with 10+ deuces. Smith got the break and took the momentum and went on to win the set 6-3. Smith broke Pasha early in the 3rd set and jumped out to a 3-1 lead. After Pasha held to make it 3-2 OSU he took a medical timeout appearing to be treated for cramps. During the medical TO Smith hit on court 5 with OSU’s coach Ty Tucker to stay loose. Based on the outcome he would have been better off sitting down and guzzling some water and putting a towel over his head too. Court 6 was the one court that stayed in the sun all match long and it seemed to take its effects on Pash. Smith held to make it 4-2 then Pasha starting turning it around. Pasha held at 40-15 to make it 4-3 then things got interesting. With Smith serving at 4-3 30-40 Pasha hit one near the line right in front of the chair umpire. Pasha started fist pumping at the break but Smith called the ball out. Pasha went crazy, UGA Asst Coach Will Glenn went crazy, then after Pasha appealed to the umpire Smith reversed his call to give the break to Pasha and make it 4 all. Glenn was arguing that after Smith made the out call he shouldn’t have been able to reverse his call 30 seconds later and that it should have been an overrule which would have been a game penalty and made it 5-4 Pasha. Not sure what the protocol is but I didn’t think that normally the chair gave the player the option to reconsider their call after the fact. In the aftermath of all this the chair got confused and put the score up as 5-3 Smith. A few points later she changed it to 4 all. After a Pasha hold Smith went down 30-40 and Pasha had a fairly easy put away to win it but he played it too safe and Smith made him pay with a winner. Pasha started hobbling after this point and it looked like his cramps were back. Pasha then tee’d off on a Smith 2nd serve to get match point again and this time he finished it off.

Smith passing shot late in the 3rd set

The final 10 minutes of the match with Pasha and Doumbia clinching it for the Dawgs :)

Couldn't have recapped that match any better myself, TopDawg. It was probably the most exciting dual match I've been to, and it gets me so pumped for the National Championships.

Wish I had known who you were and I would've come to say hi!

BTW, do you have any idea why Manny and KU were arguing/discussing with the umpire after the match? The only thing I could think of was that the last over rule would have been a point penalty that they thought should have been carried over to another court? I wasn't sure.

I couldn't quite figure that out either. At first it looked like they were going to start the match back up because both players were standing their kind of looking at each other. Like you said the only thing it could have been was a point penalty.

Dawgs rolled through dubs as well. Super quick match a 3 finishing 8-3, and the 1s finished off Arkansas 8-3 as well. Didn't play out 2 in an effort to beat the impending thunderstorms.

Hey TopDawg, that was a really good writeup yesterday. I got a question for you about Smith's call in 3rd set. Did the official make any sort of motion or say anything about overruling Smith's call? Or did she just let the call stand and then Smith later gave up the point?

If she agreed with the call and then Smith changed his mind, the official did nothing wrong (I don't think). If however, she overruled Smith and then forgot about it when he admitted to it being in, then that's wrong. She should've gone ahead with the penalty for it being his 3rd overrule.

From what I could hear after Pasha appealed the call before the umpire made her call she asked Smith again how he called it. He reversed his call and then she agreed so it was never offically overruled.

    Recap of today's matches

Tennessee pulls it out 4-3 over LSU. Chaplin broke Szacinski to go up 5-3 in the 3rd and served it out for the win. The match was played indoors.
Kentucky knocked off Auburn 4-0. The match was played indoors in Lexington due to rain.
Vandy beat Alabama 5-2. Lots of close scores. Interesting comment from the Vandy coach about how poorly they played in doubles. They lost 9-8 8-6 & 9-8.
Ole Miss rebounded from losing the doubles point to thump South Carolina 6-1.
Georgia blasted Arkansas 7-0. 5 straight set wins and 1 supertiebreak at 6.

Mississippi State leads Florida in Gainesville 3-2 with courts 5 & 6 left. At 5 Miss State's Cant leads Diep 6-4 3-4. At 6, UF's Federhofer leads White 7-6 3-2. I think both are on serve but not sure. Live Stats

Cant gets it done for Mississippi State knocking off Diep 6-4 7-6 to clinch it for MSU. Nice win for Miss State going on the road.

Ilyushin has really turned it on. Very good aggressive player.

Surprised to see Stropp take down Carleton like that.

I've never seen Carleton that off. If Stropp hit him 5 balls, he would miss. Just tough to watch him struggle like that.

    Miss State 4 Florida 3

Mississippi State beat Florida 4-3 for their 1st win over Florida in 11 years and 1st win in Gainesville in 14 years according to the MSU write-up. Doesn't get any easier for Florida with a trip to Oxford tomorrow against a solid Ole Miss team. Florida has to figure out a way to right the ship - maybe mix up the lineup some. VOB isn't getting it done for them at the top now having lost 8 of his last 9 matches with the lone win being over USF's #1. Diep has lost 6 of 8. There must be some reason why Alford isn't getting in the lineup - injury maybe? Record wise Alford is the best they have.

We are just screwed at 1 since Bangoura went pro (bad decision by him). Bob is the only player with #1 game, but he is a notch below the current sec 1's.

I've preached Alford for weeks, but it looks like he is not going to get the nod over Federhoffer or Diep. Billy played great last night...physically and mentally. Not sure how you get Alford in the mix unless you just bench Diep. I just don't think that Billy or Alford will fare any better at 5.

Only thing I can come up with that might get us a shot at 4 wins...

Bob (25% chance vs the sec)
    Carleton (40%)
    Nas (75%)
    Newman (80%)
    Federhoffer or Diep(40%)
    Alford (80%)

Flat out - we need doubles points with any lineup to have a shot at winning over any of the top 6 teams in the league. It cost us last night since I never imagined we'd lose that #3 singles match with Carleton. Nas at 2 was just on fire.

Note: had Diep won the 2nd set tb, the match at 6 would probably still be going on.

Alford should be playing. His win over Pasha(who has been the best #6 in the nation this year) is good enough to secure his spot.

And he beat Pieters at Indoors?

I agree, but I wonder if Coach Jackson was just displeased with the bagel he took in the 3rd against UK for the Cats to clinch on us. Federhoffer replaced him at USC and again played last night.

    SEC releases 2013 Conference Schedule

The SEC recently released the 2013 conference schedule which includes new members Texas A&M & Missouri. While Texas A&M fields both a men's and women's team the other new SEC member, Missouri, only fields a women's team.

Notes from men's schedule - Georgia goes to LSU for a 2nd year in a row, hosts Texas A&M, and plays Tennessee in the 1st conference match of the season instead of the last. Texas A&M doesn't play a conference match the weekend of 3/22 & 3/24. On 6 of the 7 Sundays there are only 5 conference matches instead of 6. The one Sunday with 6 conference matches is the Sunday Texas A&M is off.

Gators looking good today winning the doubles point, getting a rare win at #1 by VOB over Scholtz. Carleton about to finish over Lutjen at 3. Alford up 3-1 in the 3rd at #5.

No Federhoffer and no Diep and Butz is playing? I'm officially confused at how we are setting lineups. Do they just draw straws at pre game meal between the bottom 4 players?

Who cares, got the W on the road.

Georgia getting tested in Baton Rouge - leading 3-1 but 3 courts are still up for grabs. Pasha played up at 5 and won 7-6 6-1. Pieters dropped down to 6 and leads 2-1 in the 3rd. Good thing we eeked out the doubles point.

Tennessee about to pull one out in Fayetteville. Arkansas took the doubles point and pushed UT hard on 4 courts in singles

Is there a massive rain delay at Auburn?
