Recap of Sunday April 8th Matches

Great weekend for Kentucky. They pasted both Mississippi State and Ole Miss to lock up the #1 seed in the SEC Tournament.

Kentucky handled Ole Miss fairly easily 5-2. UK rebounded from dropping the doubles point by winning in straight sets at 3-6.
Georgia took care of Auburn 6-1 with all singles matches finishing in straight sets. Only blemish for Georgia was Wil Spencer getting hammered 6-1 6-2.
LSU upset Florida 4-2. LSU got the doubles point and straight set wins at 1, 2, and a 6-1 win in the 3rd set at 4. Sliliam sat out singles for Florida.
Alabama rolled Tennessee 6-1. Alabama played well this past week also beating Memphis and coming close to upsetting Georgia.
Mississippi State won the closest match of the day 4-3 over Vandy. 5 of the 6 singles matches went 3 sets with Coupland winning the deciding match at #5 7-6 6-7 6-4.
South Carolina beat Arkansas 4-1. Cocks won the dubs point and 1, 3, & 6 singles.

SEC Schedule for Saturday April 14th

Final day of the regular season for all the SEC Teams. Kentucky will clinch the regular season title outright with a win over Vandy. UK already has a 1st round bye and the #1 seed locked up in next weeks SEC Tournament in Starkville. Ole Miss and Mississippi State should be the match of the day - winner takes the SEC West Crown. Ole Miss had won 26 straight in the series before Mississippi State took the last 2. I'll take Ole Miss at 1,2,3 & dubs and MSU at 4,5,6. Also I'll take Alabama to upset Auburn which means Auburn will probably win it in a rout.

    Georgia goes to Tennessee at 1pm est - LiveBlog/Video & LiveStats - Georgia 5-2
Kentucky hosts Vanderbilt at 1pm est - LiveStats & LiveBlog - Kentucky 6-1
Florida hosts South Carolina at 1pm est - LiveStats - Gators 6-1
Ole Miss hosts Mississippi State at 2pm est - LiveStats & LiveBlog - Ole Miss 4-3

I'd love to be watching Ole Miss vs Miss State right now. Super tight and intense between the rivals.

Got to love some of these blogs. This is from the Tennessee blog today for their match against Georgia. In a matter of a minute from 4:07 to 4:08 they go from having a shot at winning to losing 4-0.

4:07 If Brandon can turn his around, the Vols have a very realistic shot of winning this match.
    4:07 Reese loses.
    4:08 Georgia clinches 4-0.

    Recap of Saturday's SEC Matches

Mississippi State beat Ole Miss 4-3 to lock up the #3 seed in the conference tournament. 3rd straight win over Ole Miss for the Bulldogs.
Florida cruised to a 6-1 win over South Carolina after dropping the doubles point.
Kentucky clinched the SEC regular season title outright with a 6-1 win over Vanderbilt. Kentucky finished the regular season undefeated in SEC play.
Auburn knocked off in-state rival Alabama 4-1.
LSU beat Arkansas 4-0. Straight set wins at 1,2,& 3 for LSU.
Georgia shut out Tennessee 7-0. I made the trip over to Knoxville for that one and will have a recap on Sunday with some video.

I'll also put out the brackets for the SEC Tournament tomorrow as well.

I made the 2 1/2 hour drive from Nashville to Knoxville to see yesterday's Georgia/UT match. Great day for tennis with the temp in the high 70s and a minimal breeze. With it being the last regualr season match for UT I was expecting a bigger turnout. When these 2 play in Athens there's usually well over a 1000 on hand and sometimes upwards of 2500. There were maybe 400 people in the stands but I found out later that both UTs Baseball and Softball teams were playing at the same time so that probably pulled some folks that normally would have come to watch tennis.

Not a bad facility but all the seats are behind courts 1 and 2 so it's a little tough to follow some of the other courts. As you can see from the videos there's a lot of space between each court - probably double or triple what you'd normally see. Each court has its own set of lights so you get those shadows coming in.

I added some video in the links though unlike the Ohio State match I went to last month there wasn't any controversy in this one.

Doubles: All 3 doubles courts were blowouts.
    1. #10 Mikelis Libietis/Hunter Reese (UT) def. #79 Sadio Doumbia/Hernus Pieters (UGA) 8-3 - Manny switched the doubles lineup and put Doumbia and Pieters together for the 1st time in almost 2 months. UGA pair led 2-0 then it went downhill.
    2. Nathan Pasha/Ignacio Taboada (UGA) def. Edward Jones/Jarryd Chaplin (UT) 8-2 - Pasha/Taboada were paired up again for the first time in 2 months and played very well together. This win pushed their record together to 7-0. In my opinion they are Georgia's best doubles tandem so it was good to see them back together again. Against USC at the Indoors they were the only UGA doubles team not to lose - they led 7-6 when it was stopped.
    3. Wil Spencer/KU Singh (UGA) def. Peter Nagovnak/Bryan Swartz (UT) 8-3. Spencer/Singh played well but UTs #3 team was not good losing for the 7th straight time. UGA tandem was up 7-0 and blew 2 match points receiving and then 2 serving for it before finally putting it away.

Singles: Tennessee has a very young team - starting freshmen at 1, 2, & 3. They have little depth so they're going to have to keep recruiting to improve for next year.

    1. #9 Wil Spencer (UGA) def. #42 Mikelis Libietis (UT) 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-6
I spent most of my time watching this match. Libietis is very impressive for a freshman. You don't see too many players serve and volley anymore but that was primarily what he did. He's got very good hands and touch at the net. He has a big 1st serve that is probably up in the 120s. Only thing that wasn't as strong was his backhand - he hit a few good ones but seemed to just kind of slap the ball back most of the time. I thought Spencer played a very good match considering his record of late. There were no breaks of serve in the 1st set though each had a few break point opportunities. Here is some video of the opening service game for each. During the 1st set Spencer tried to go over or around Libietis when he came to the net, in the 2nd set Spencer started hitting it right at Libietis and that seemed to work better. He was able to handcuff him multiple times. Here is some video of the 1st set tiebreak which Libietis won 7-3. Libietis dropped to the court on match point in the 3rd set supertiebreak and had to take a medical timeout for a few minutes.
    2. #28 KU Singh (UGA) def. #97 Hunter Reese (UT) 6-4, 6-4.
KU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st set and was serving to go up 4-0 before Reese got 1 of the breaks back. They stayed on serve the rest of the way. There were a few breaks in the 2nd set but Reese was never able to get the lead. Both players have similar games but KU was the more seasoned of the 2 and he won the key points. Video of final few points of the match.
    3. #24 Sadio Doumbia (UGA) def. Brandon Fickey (UT) 4-6, 6-1, 6-1
Not exactly a ton of great points in this one. There were 4 straight breaks to start the match before Sadio got the 1st hold. Fickey served the 1st set out in a lengthy service game which seemed to take a lot of energy out of him. The 2nd and 3rd sets weren't close at all. Fickey called for the trainer once to have his shoulder worked on and never got it going after that. Here are the final 2 points of the match which ended on a Fickey double fault.
    4. #39 Ignacio Taboada (UGA) def. Jarryd Chaplin (UT) 6-2, 6-4
Didn't watch much of this one. Chaplin didn't pose any threat to Nacho.
    5. #52 Hernus Pieters (UGA) def. Edward Jones (UT) 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
This was a pretty good match. Pieters went up 2-0 in the 2nd set before Jones won 6 of the next 7 games to take the set. Pieters served for the match up 5-3 but got broke and then broke back to win it. Here is some video of that 5-3 service game. Here is match point along with match point in the Spencer/Libietis match. Pieters has won 7 straight and seems to be peaking at the right time.
    6. Nathan Pasha (UGA) def. Taylor Patrick (UT) 6-1, 6-2.
It seemed like this court was a 1/2 mile away and with the score being so lopsided I didn't pay too much attention to it. As the score indicates, it was a blowout. Here is match point. Tennessee went 5-16 in the #6 singles spot this year. I'm surprised they didn't let their only senior Bryan Swartz take a stab at this one. He couldn't have done any worse :)

This is a pretty wide open tourmanent in my opinion. I think Kentucky, Georgia, and Mississippi State are all capable of winning it. Georgia and Mississippi State will likely face each other in the semis. If Florida brings their A game they could challenge Kentucky in the semis though the Ole Miss match may take a lot out of them.

Interesting to watch your first video of Spencer playing. He must be having some serve troubles of late, because I've never seen him go with that preset trophy position on serve.

You know when I saw him doing that I thought the same thing. He also did that on overheads to. It seemed to work well though because he was only broke once.

Match #1 (First Round) - #7 Auburn vs. #10 South Carolina 8 a.m - Auburn won the regular season meeting 4-3 with it coming down to #4 singles which Auburn won 6-4 6-4. All matches were straight sets. I'll take Auburn 4-1 this time around.

Match #2 (First Round) - #6 Tennessee vs. #11 Alabama not before 11 a.m. - UT LiveBlog - Alabama routed Tennessee less than 2 weeks ago 6-1. This is a must win for UT if they are to have any chance of hosting in the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAAs. I say the Vols did deep and win it 4-2.

Match #3 (First Round) - #8 LSU vs. #9 Vanderbilt not before 2 p.m - LSU won the regular season meeting 6-1 in match that was closer than the final score indicated. LSU won the dubs point taking #1 dubs in a tiebreak and 5 of the singles matches had a set that was 7-6 or 7-5. Vandy comes into this one on a 6 match losing streak though this may be the match where they right the ship. I'll take Vandy in a 4-3 upset with Gonzalez Austin winning the clincher 7-5 in the 3rd.

Match #4 (First Round) - #5 Ole Miss vs. #12 Arkansas not before 5 p.m. - Ole Miss won the regular season match 6-1 - this one should be a quick Ole Miss 4-0 shutout.

Looks like this one may be headed for a 4-3 finish. Auburn leads 3-1 but #1 singles is headed to a 3rd set, Adams of SC up 6-4 4-2 at #2, and Koch of SC up 6-4 5-4 at #6.

Adams takes it 6-4 6-3 to cut the gap to 3-2. Mies leads 4-0 in the 3rd for Auburn at the #1 spot so it looks like Auburn will win this 4-2 barring a huge collapse.

Update: Mies does finish it 6-1 in the 3rd and Auburn moves on to face Georgia tomorrow morning.

Strong showing by the Vols in singles after some tight doubles scores. Must have been a battle at 1 with Libietis taking 2 tiebreaks off Doverspike.

At the pace these matches are going, the last match might not finish til midnight.

Nah, he said 7-5 and didn't indicate that it would be the tiebreak score in the third...

Seriously, heck of a call on that one.

You throw enough crap on the wall and eventually something has to stick...I just had a feeling Vandy was due for one. They've been so close this year to getting over the hump but have come up short one time after another. They had Mississippi State on the ropes 2 weeks ago and lost the decider at #5 7-6 6-7 6-4. Everybody has been playing up a spot this year for Vandy with their #1 singles player Ryan Lipman out for the year with an injury. They've got a ton of youth starting 3 freshmen in Austin, Offerdahl, and Kovrigin. They're going to be much tougher next year.

    Rebels/Razorbacks.

Arkansas pushed Ole Miss in doubles before the Rebs got a late break at #1 to pull it out 8-6 8-0 6-6. Marcel Thiemann not playing singles so everyone moved up a spot. Kallberg already got a 1st set bagel at #3 so he passed the cream cheese to Jonas Lutjen over at #2 who spread it on his 1st set bagel too. Ole Miss going to pick up a 4-0 win in about another 45 minutes.

Update: Ole Miss gets straight sets wins at 2 & 4 but Arkansas digging deep. 3rd sets coming up at 1 & 3. Ole Miss up a set at 5 & 6 but the 2nd sets are still early. This one could go on for another hour

The one team sitting pretty right now is Florida. While they're sleeping, Ole Miss is going to be lucky to be in their bed by 2am.

    Match #5 (Quarterfinal) - #2 Georgia vs. #7 Auburn 8 a.m. - UGA LiveBlog
Georgia beat Auburn 6-1 just 2 weeks ago and I don't think this one should be any closer. Last year Auburn knocked us out in the SEC Qtrs this year I say Georgia wins it 4-0.

    Match #6 (Quarterfinal)-#3 Mississippi State vs. #6 Tennessee 11 a.m. - UT LiveBlog
Mississippi State won the March 11th regular season meeting 4-3. This time Mississippi State has the home court and they get better performances from 4 & 5 and roll to a 4-0 shutout.

    Match #7 (Quarterfinal)-#1 Kentucky vs. #9 Vanderbilt 2 p.m.
Kentucky beat Vandy 6-1 just 5 days ago. Vandy is riding the high from tonight's upset but can't keep up with Kentucky - Cats 4-0

    Match #8 (Quarterfinal) - #4 Florida vs. #5 Ole Miss 5 p.m.
Gators went into Oxford on March 25th and came away with a 5-2 win. A tired Ole Miss team will come out a little sluggish and Florida will take advantage of it to claim the doubles point. Singles should be a war but I'll say Florida gets wins from Sliliam, Diep, and Alford assuming they play 3, 5, & 6 to give Florida a 4-2 win. I saw this nice article about Nassim Sliliam's decision to come to Florida and it mentions he'll get his degree in May after only being on campus for 2 1/2 years.

If UF plays the same singles lineup in the SEC that we played in our last match vs. SC, I can finally say that I agree with Jackson's lineup...Bob/Tripper/Nas/Newman/Diep/Alford.

I'll even be OK if Federhoffer swaps out for Diep. But, if Alford gets left out I think it makes it harder on us to win.

Why would'nt you use the same line up from the last time Gators beat Ole Miss? Have you watched Diep play? No way he should play in front of Federhoffer, Alford, or Butz.

When you spend scholarship money on a foreign recruit (not saying full scholarship, because I know it doesn't work that way), the coach feels pressure to justify it by playing the guy. I have seen it before, around the country at various teams. Putting several domestic recruits who were given about 10% scholie money ahead of the hot shot overseas recruit who got more than that is embarrassing. Having the overseas recruit at #7 or #8 is embarrassing.

Georgia close to finishing it out. Pieters won 6-0 6-1 at #6 and Taboada won 6-4 7-6 at #4 to give the Dawgs a 3-0 lead. Pasha leads 7-6 4-3 at #5 - he was up 4-0 in that 2nd set.

He lost to Mies 6-1 6-2 a few weeks ago so he's looking better than he did then. I think he'll get bailed out by his teammates and get a DNF.

I've seen him several times. Early in the season, I thought he was a solid 4. As the season went on, I didn't even want him out there.

If I had to rank him amongst the three that you mention...Alford, Federhoffer, Diep, Butz. But, for some reason Jackson has had Federhoffer and Diep ahead of Alford all season. It would be sad if what Clark is saying is the case, but he makes a good point.

MSU v UT looks more interesting than I had thought it would be. UT takes first sets in tiebreakers at 1 & 6...neither of which I would have thought they had a chance at.

Both Illyushin & White led 5-3 in the those 1st sets and blew it. Miss State just won at courts 4 and 5 to make it 3-0. Stropp was serving for the match at #2 and got broke. Still think it'll finish 4-0 MSU.

Tennessee was down a break in the 1st set at 1,3,6 and forced tiebreakers in all three matches.

This match could either teeter-totter out to 4-2 or 3 or this is going to end in about 2 minutes

Libietis pulls off the upset at 1...this kid has a fan in Gainesville. Really like his game & this is a huge win for him.

A lot of pressure on Patrick at 6. Kid hasn't won an SEC match this season and he needs to in order for UT to advance. UT turned the tables at 2 & 3.

I don't like Libietis to much. I actually like Illyushin's game and attitude a lot more, but thats just me.

Interesting, I saw both play here this year & my feelings were the opposite - serve and volley of Libietis totally took Bob out of his game. However, I respect the heck out of Illyushin's game too. He was a little out there with his celebrating on every point, but it was an intense match that they pulled out.
