Not sure if that has been asked before, but what does it mean when someone says that they recreationally play at a 4.5 level, but in an open USTA tournament they play at a 5.5 level?

    Thanks

well, it would depend on how they did at the 5.5 level. If they got schooled 0 and 0, then yeah, they probably are a 4.5. If they won 2, 3 or 4 games a set (and their opponent was trying), then agreed to the above. :)

A 4.5 is someone who understands how to customize their raquets and uses lead tape. They have a deep knowledge of swing weights and beams, paint jobs and power pads.

Generally, they do not play USTA sanctioned matches but are found on various internet tennis partner mailing lists clammouring about their non-existent NTRP levels.

    They are all over TT.

They are reading this post now.

My guess is that the person means when he's just hacking around with his buddies playing tennis for laughs he plays at the 4.5 level. But, when he's playing his best in a competition he plays at a 5.5 level.

But, why don't you just ask the person what he means?
How would we know what he means?

Actually a true USTA-blessed 4.5 player has a huge collection of USTA Pens that have the text, "3.5 National Champions" inscribed on them.
