It really pisses me off when Hollywood takes a really good movie, and purely based on greed decide to make a sequel to it.

I know it's hard for studios to make money, not that many films end up making a profit, so when they have a movie that does well, they jump on the opportunity to make more money with #2 and #3.

I don't mind it so much when it fits the plot (and the end of the first one), but when you take a movie that had a perfectly good ending, and make a sequel that doesn't make any sense, you just leave a bad taste with the viewers.

    1) Pirates of the Caribbean #2,#3 - I don't even know what to say.

    2) Matrix #2,#3 - I didn't even bother with #3.

I completely agree with POTC 2 and 3. The brilliant thing about the first one was that none of Jack Sparrow's mannerisms (and about half of his lines) were written in, but ad-libbed by Johnny Depp. After seeing the success of that, the writers tried to write the character that way, and it felt much more forced. The second was a mishmash of too-long action sequences and skewed folklore. I'll be honest and say that I didn't even bother seeing the third...I read the script online shortly before it came out and decided that it wasn't worth paying $10 or more to see it in a theatre.

Pirates of the Caribbean. The first one was great. Bright, funny, energetic. The sequels. . .er. Dead Man's Chest had some of the energy, and was fun in places, but over all it was too long, too little content. At Words End, is depressing. It lacks energy, it's just not fun, or thrilling. The first one is like the fun of a ride, the others were like waiting in line for the ride, but no pay off after.

I liked the Matrix, and I would have liked the sequels if it was done in one movie. But three is the magic number. What is wrong with a having a duology? I do not know.

Back to the Future, the first movie, is great. It still stands as fun and original, and thrilling. I liked the Part II for what it was trying to achieve, but I had a hard time caring. Part III. . .It has some fun, but it lacks having a real point to the overall arc.

As for the prequels to star wars. I did not like where it began. I much would have rather it started around the time that Episode II, or III did. Revenge of the Sith is the second best of the Star Wars movies.

    #1 Empire Strikes Back (Duh)
    #2 Revenge of the Sith
#3 New Hope (Star Wars, for the purists)
#4 Return of The Jedi (originally going to be called Revenge of The Jedi)

The Mummy was fun, campy but fun. Return of The Mummy. . .Return my 2 hours please.

Really, it's more like "what were good sequels?" The default is sequels usually suck. It's often fun pointing out the exceptions, but when terrible sequels is overwhelmingly the norm?

Good sequels: Godfather 2... Indiana Jones 3... Empire Strikes Back... X-Men 2... Bourne Identity 2... Anal Debutantes 13

I agree on debutantes and anything that has A z z in the title.

But seriously I think Terminator 2 was better than the original, and Almost all the 007 movies were good, Oceans 12..... think that and what 35ft6 said is about it?

I thought Spiderman 2 was better than the first, but the third was pretty bad. Ocean's 12 was good as a standalone, as it was originally intended, but I didn't like it as a sequel to Ocean's 11.

    More good sequels:
    The Two Towers
    Return of the King

Though, in a sense, they cannot be called sequels as they were shot at the same time, but released after gaps of one year each.

They're still sequels...they're the next bit of the story.

I think sequels rarely surpass the original. Empire Strikes Back is a good execption (over A New Hope.)

Aside from Alien and Aliens, I didn't much care for Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection. Also, Terminator 3 was awful compared to the first two movies.

    The Sequels That Succeeded...

The only sequels I can think of that succeeded are from the Godfather. I. II and III are all exceptional movies that could stand alone on their own.

Those are based on books, which for the most part, means they are good.

Much like Harry Potter, and Bourne trilogy, which I think are very good.

Common not Rocky, Rocky 4 was awesome. And the last Balboa one was ok. :)

Rocky4 was a cold war parody of itself, which made it great.

:) More awesomely bad Rocky IV quotes.

"No, maybe I can't win, maybe the only thing I can do is just take everything he's got. But to beat me, he's gonna have to kill me, and to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me, and to do that, he's gotta be willing to die himself and I don't know if he's ready to do that. I don't know, I don't know."

    "You see? You see? He's not a machine, he's a man, he's a man."
"He's not human. He's like a piece of iron. "

Fast And the Furious 2 and 3. (Nothing compared to the 1st one. It started a movement to fixing up imports.)

I agree about 2 and 3 sucking. The only reason to watch was for the cars. Some were incredible especially the american muscle

for the import/customization movement, Are you NUTS! I'm from Miami and when I was in HS in the early 90's the customization market was already Huge. The movie may have brought it to Utah, and Montana.

Yeah, I decided they weren't really sequels because they were shot at the same time, not because it's a continuation of the story, otherwise Empire and Return of Jedi wouldn't be sequels either.

Aliens is another great example. Two sites talking about great sequels:

    http://www.epinions.com/content_2003738756

    http://www.bullz-eye.com/mguide/features/2005/best_sequels.htm

Batman Begins is the best of the Batman movies, IMO. But, again, is it a sequel?

I'm with you guys, sequels usually bite.
However, am I the only one who liked Wayne's World 2? Come on.

Oh, I saw parts of the filming of Bourne Identity. So I felt compelled to see it ... and I definitely liked it. Bourne Supremacy was really good, too, so I'd like to submit that to that very short list of sequels that were well made.

    Definitely:
    Godfather 2.
    Rocky 2.
    Empire Strikes Back.
    Shrek 2.
    Breakin' 2, Electric Boogaloo.

There are more, I'm sure. But yeah, you cats are right, the original is always better than the franchised, paycheck mongering second one.

That one might actually be my favorite one...love the training montage of Rocky in what looks like Siberia while they cut away to shots of Drago and all his high tech training gadgets. Old school beats new school!

I dislike most sequels and remakes. The exception of this is Star Wars and Lord of the Rings (although I don't consider these to be sequels).

    My most hated sequels:

    Basic Instinct 2
    Tremors (all)
American Pie (the band camp one)

Did no one else like Jurassic Park II and III ?
    I loved the sequels.

LOTR was actually written as one book looong ago, and broken into three for movies. Also, its not like the success of the first determined the next. They were shot together, as pointed out already.

    But still, great sequels.

Did anyone see the one dozen sequels of Psycho ! Came on tv here, each worse than the previous.

I really liked the first Jurassic Park. I thought JPII was too long and lacked the connection with the characters to make me care if hey got scarped. I liked JPIII better; it was much shorter gave me the connection to care if they survived. The problem is the ending was too far over the top.

I thought LOTR was first a set of three books that were then put sold as one book. I sure that's it.

I can't honestly remember. Something about the war, and a shortage of paper so they printed it in three or something.

As far as JPII - i was at the edge of my seat almost throughout. And JPIII - with those birds -- freaks me out totally. I did not see it from the character angle as you have.

In Miami and Cali serious street customs were around since the late 80's early 90's. Anyone else remember the first customized supra's and those pickup trucks with the little 10'' rims, and Neon ground effects kits, with systems :)

Also sport compact car magazine has been published since about 1990. I had a subscription which was about all I could afford on my sports authority wages. :) I do agree that the fast and furious movies introduced the import tuner scene to my parents friends, and most of the mid west.

Wow, yeah I think we may have a winner. That movie was made from pure greed. So bad even Ted wouldn't be in it. Bogus! ;-)

And I know it's not a sequel but I think Hudson Hawk deserves an honorable mention.

Hudson Hawk and Speed 2 win the "Daddy gotta make a car note" award.
