during my serves, after the serve, i'll screw up my timing somehow, but i won't realize it until i start to swing my racquet. is it 'rude' or illegal to stop, catch the ball and re-serve after i start to swing my racquet and before i make contact?

If you missed the ball its a fault. I think swinging the racquet in the air and not hitting the ball, though to a human eye may be obviously different than missing it, I would just not swing it if you see you have a bad toss.

It is perfectly legal and acceptable to stop the service motion in the middle of the swing as long as it is obvious that you did not intend to hit the ball. As stated above, a swing and miss on serve is a fault. However, you may catch the toss at any point provided you don't attemt to make contact. Some players may get annoyed by this, especially if you do it repeatedly, but you have the right to a good toss (provided you can actually do it).
