I've seen serve videos talk about serving with the leading edge of the racket before making contact with the ball.
I already have a continental grip. Doesn't that mean that i automatically approach the ball with a leading edge? Does the moment at which you open the racket matter, that is does it have to be right before you hit the ball?

perhaps, it all depends on your swing path. if your swing looks anything like those of the instructors' in the videos you've seen, the you're probably ok. you can lead with the edge regardless if you use continental or eastern to serve with.

leading with the edge is basically trying to prevent people from "pancaking" the serve. the idea of leading with the edge is to help promote the pronation of the arm associated with the serve. Pronation is a big part of the kinetic chain of the serve.

yeah, timing when the racquet opens/ when your arm pronates does matter. too early and it will rob you of speed. too late and it will rob you of speed. Unless you're like Feliciano Lopez with your pronation range.

Take some balls and practice swinging edge first at the ball like a hammer. Practice opening the face at the last possible moment. Don't assume you are pronating if you haven't actively focused on this. I made that mistake for years. One thing that might help with this is starting your serve motion with the strings facing upwards, Raonic style.

I agree with this. Somehow, I'm serving with more consistency when doing this, and there seems to be more action on the ball as well.
