What is the purpose of lifting your left toe off the ground with your heel on the ground (like a gas pedal) before serving like Sampras. Does it get you weight moving forward or is it just a habit?
    Thanks for any responses.

It gets the weight on the back foot early so you can make a the weight shift foreward later. Lifting the toe is not mandatory for a good weight though.

Primarly it is used to get your wieght moving forward. It is a very delicate thing to do. It is also part habit and what Sampras felt aided his serving. If you want to do it just make sue when you toss the ball,, yoru center of gravity is either forward your center line or right baout on it. That way you wont go to much forward relative to your ball toss.
