Sharapova: if I was built like Serena think I'd hit a big serve too

An issue people aren't talking about is the double standards for female athletes. Let's be honest here, I'm not straight, but I imagine the reason Sharapova gets so many endorsements is BECAUSE she has a very feminine image.

Female athletes have a tricky balance they must be athletic but not too athletic, they have to be sexy to appease the straight guys.

So a female athlete can't win, if she doesn't work out hard and lift weights people call her lazy. But if a woman does lift weights people on the internet call

her a lesbian slur word which I won't repeat.

I think some of the straight guys here are a bit hypocritical, they always talk about how pretty Sharapova is, and how they want to have sex with her.

A lot of women want to look like Maria Sharapova and the men want to have sex with her and that's what advertisers are counting on.

Sharapova is the HIGHEST paid female athlete in the world Forbes said she made close to $30 million dollars OFF court last year.

Maria makes so much money because sponsors believe she can sell to consumers especially heterosexual male consumers. If you go on numerous sports websites the men are salivating they always talk about how attractive Maria Sharapova is, then after that they talk about her tennis.

Maria knows this, she isn't going to bulk up and lift weights, she even said so after winning the Indian Wells event in an interview.

Maria seems very concerned about maintaining her femininity which I believe a lot of female athletes worry about.

Samantha Stosur gets called a man all the time, on sports forums because of her broad shoulders and big serve. Even on this message board people who don't like Serena call her a man too.

So, female athletes have to deal with a lot of pressure, how does a woman maintain her femininity yet also excel at sports?

If a female athlete lifts weights and gets strong she is ridiculed by sports fans. So on one hand I can see Maria Sharapova's reluctance to lift weights.

So, it has got to be tough for Samantha and Serena, because calling a woman a man is a huge insult and that's what Maria is doing.

Sharapova is ridiculing Serena for working out and taking tennis seriously. Serena is a professional she knows to be the best she must work out in get into

top physical condition. Sharapova though wants to maintain her femininity at all costs so she's never going to lift weights.

But making fun of Serena for taking her job seriously is tacky on Maria's part and shows she's a sore loser.

I am no Maria fan, but I think she chooses not to light weights because she doesn't want to hurt her brand or her femininity.

Female athletes are judged rather harshly by male sports fans.

The pretty ones like Ana Ivanovic, Agnieszka Radwanska or Maria Sharapova can rank in millions of dollars in endorsements.

How much money is Samantha Stosur making off the court anyone know? I think Stosur is an attractive woman but again she doesn't have the build that sponsors like.

I also think Serena Williams is an attractive woman but she doesn't make close to what Sharapova makes off the court.

She may be a brilliant tennis player, but she has a lot to learn about humility.. Then again I can remember the William's sisters being rather disrectful and mean in relation to other players as well ,earlier on in their careers.. Perhaps Maria simply needs to grow up?

On a personal level, guy thing here, I prefer Serena's curves to a giant stick insect any day of the week...:)

Re the money from sponspors and what not, yep totally unfair.. Very true in swimming for the girls as well.. The "pretty" ones go on and work in the media/weather girls/TV lifestyle shows after their swimming has finished as well..Just to top it off!!

Amelie, I really enjoyed reading your post +1... Just a quick one, sorry in advance for my ignorance, but are u the "Amelie M"??

Sharapova's serve is amazingly inconsistent. One can't help but believe that her obsession with velocity over technique is a large part of the problem.

Sharapova should have all of the physical tools to be an elite server: she is extremely tall (tallest woman on tour at 6'2.5"?), and has an enormous reach. She should be able to generate incredibly velocity as a result of those two attributes alone.

Unfortunately, she has a very inconsistent toss, and often misses the service box by 3 feet or more.

Serena's technique with all of her strokes is vastly superior. Sharapova has entered in the era of the brainless ball basher and she has no one to blame but herself.

I would love to see a source. Not hatin', but genuinely interested.

I am beginning to suspect that Mandy Minella of all people may be using PED's. Even just a year ago, she had a very lithe, feminine body. Now, she's noticeably more muscular, is sporting some curious shoulder/back? acne, and her face looks older and more wrinkled.

It is what it is: pro athletes are going to use PED's. With million dollar paychecks at the majors, and tens of millions in prize money and endorsements at stake over the course of a career, it's simply inevitable.

Many women lift weights. Not very many wind up with the physique of a Serena Williams or a Stosur.

And it's not just their muscularity which generates suspicion. Stosur has a very deep, 'masculine' voice. There are women who have husky voices, but that's very different from having a deep, masculine sounding voice.

We all know PED use is rampant. It's odd then that despite the consensus, everyone acts shocked when a specific player is mentioned.

You must be ignorant about some sports or trolling. Not Stosur or William's problem if the other girls care more about their looks than what's actually good for their performances.

And they are always told that they should do 3 sets of 10 reps using light weights so they can be "toned" (as opposed to heavy weights fewer reps which will make them look "bulky").

Yeah, a lot of women probably don't want back acne, a cranium the size of a meteor, a jawline like andre the giant, or a voice like barry white. How dare they?!?

Great argument. I suppose doing fewer reps with heavier weights also gives women back acne or increases the size of their heads too. And makes their voice deeper. And makes their skin age. And gives them an adam's apple.

Physical appearance and genetics aside, Maria is the definition of successful ballbashing. No more, no less.

I didn't like Serena's game at the beginning of her career but she improved in lots of areas over the time, compensating for what she lost. She can crush everyone on the tour but still made a point to master clay court game after her humiliating first round exit last year. That's determination and dedication to her sport.

They are both annoying Diva though.

Thank you. My argument is a great argument.

Serena and Sam don't have any of those things, so what's your point? Some women put on muscle more easily than others (not all men put on muscle equally to each other either). And most women don't try to put on muscle because it makes a lot of men uncomfortable, or because they dont want to appear less "feminine."

Both. Certain "tennis fans" have some bizarre desire to see all women as small, fragile or poweder-puff dolls, despite that fantasy having no place in professional sports--and they are not the leaders of any tennis field.

Maria plays the wrong game vs. Serena, you can't try to slug and KO Tyson (Serena) you have to box and move and trick her. Maria doesn't have that variety, she just ball bashes, which is just what Serena wants. Terrible match up for Maria who does nothing better than Serena, not even shrieking.

Serena does not have a preference for ball bashing; as a player who can play any part of the court, she has defeated all types of players, including the "all-courters" such as Henin, Mauresmo and now Radwanska, among others.

Seems like sour grapes from Sharapova. Serena may have freakish strength but she has great technique too. Sharapova is 6'3 and one of the strongest girls on tour. I know she has had her shoulder injuries, but her build is certainly not holding her back from serving better.

physique has less to do with it than technique. many commentators have remarked on how perfect Serena's toss and service motion is.

A 6"2 women whining about her size disadvantage is pathetic. Yes she isnt as muscular as Serena, but she is still 6 inches or so taller, so she is hardly significantly smaller. Maybe she should spend more time in the gym and less doing photo shoots if she wants to be more muscular. How many times would Sharpova have beaten Henin if they were the same size. Try zero, which would eliminate atleast 2 of her current slams. Actually would Sharapova with her skill set based almost entirely on power, mostly through physical strength and her size as her technique is mediocre, even be a top 20 player? Fat chance.

Its impressive that Kournikova still looks way better than Sharapova. Talk about a weak beauty era we are in now. Although if we are ranking today's era, I don't think Sharapova should represent it.

Henin wasn't any "SMARTER" than Maria. In fact your proved it yourself in your next paragraph. Maria doesn't posses the ability to hit the shots Justine hit. IF Justine had Maria's down the line forehand she would have mixed that in too but she didn't possess it. Maria is a great player but Serena is an all time great.

Serena has more trouble with players who can mix it up was the point and it is a correct one although Samantha Stosur and Clijsters did out-slug her those two USO finals...

So they player that varies strategies depending of the opponents and the one that hits the cover off the ball all the time whoever is on the other side of the net, there isn't one that's smarter? Interesting.
Of course not many people can have the deadly slice of Graf or the serve of Roddick, but you don't need to be a genius of some sort to hit a decent slice or vary spins and be able to play two balls in a row at net. Henin could, Sharapova can't. And it isn't because she's "unable to" physically or something. She doesn't train that part of the game, that's all.

Henin in her come back tried to use a power game to win Wimbledon and it failed. The idea that every player should or can be able to hit every shot and use every strategy to beat an all time great like Serena is misguided. Maria is a great player who plays one way and frankly speaking Serena plays one way as well.

Whenever someone doesn't like a particular power player they label them a "basher" then those same people will admit all the great players today hit the cover off the ball. Radwanksa is one dimentional too - she can't overpower anyone so she resorts to different spins and angles and touch. Her game isn't any smarter than Sharapova's or Serena's. Sharapova's main problems are not that she's doesn't play "smarter" like Radwanska. Her main problems are: 1) Serena 2)Serena and 3) Serena.

Other than that she beats just about everyone else. This board spends an inordinate amount of time knocking Sharapova. The woman has one of the best if not the best down the line forehands of all time. Her Serve is erratic. She is slow.

I don't understand all these comments about Sharapova's shoulders. Her shoulders look normal to me. And for a professional athlete I would say they are probably narrower than other female athletes. Have a look at some female pro baller and soccer players if you want a comparison.
