Unnaturally broad shoulders is a sign of possible PED usage. So is unnaturally high serve & ground stroke speeds.

^Then with her serve speed record and suspicious height, Venus Williams should be busted anytime soon...

Yeah, it almost seems like people WANT players to be using PED's. Perhaps it comforts them to think these people are good at tennis only because they dope.

Azarenka owns Sharapova off of clay, and given how close their French Open contest was, it wont be long before she is beating her regularly on clay too.

As for the rest, well Sharapova's success vs most of the top players is more a sign how weak the womens field has gotten. Once it improves again she will start losing to most of the top 10 regularly again, especialy as she ages and slows which is going to start happening given her age and lack of inherit athleticsm. That is what usually happened in her real prime as Henin, Serena, Mauresmo, Clijsters, Venus on grass, and others beat her with regularity, hence why she lost 5 slam semis in a row to 5 different women at one stretch before reaching another final.

I'm not sure you have much to worry about at this point...unless of course Serena is playing with a broken leg...

Don't even put Maria in the same grouping as Ana. Only the blind think they are equally as hot.

I am not a Sharapova fan by any means, but she has every right to criticize someone who has a physique that looks roided even for a man.

There is not a single woman on the tour that looks like Serena. You'd probably have to turn to MMA (male) heavyweights to find that kind of musculature

Stosur is pretty "built" herself, maybe not as Serena's, but she's close. How come she doesn't serve bombs like Serena then?

Could it be, technique and practice? Just a thought Shriekapova.

For comparison, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (6'1", 249 lb) vs. Serena Williams.

    Hey, back off!
You think it's easy being a highly paid spokesmodel and Serena's lapdog? Well, it's not! Plus the nerve of Serena to speak French...in France. Not Cool. :-?

Lol. I when they were kids, Richard compared her to a pitbull. Well, in old times, these dogs were trained to be so hardcore, that their owners would place bets like "my dog will beat your dog even if I cut its back leg off!" It's gross, but so is dogfighting in general. Anyway, I think of his statement sometimes, because she just won't quit (at slams anyway). Last year she entered AO with a sprained ankle and basically stood in place on the baseline bashing balls and winning until Makarova finally knocked her out in the 4th round. This year she had another sprained anke and went all the way to qf and almost won that match until her back started spasming and her serves dropped down to 80mph. But even then she still stayed in and made Sloane take it from her. Total pitbull.

one: i ll bet she has some natural genetics,
two: she probably eats and supplements right (not steroids),
three: she obviously isn't scared to try a bicep curl of more than 10 lbs like most women.

being muscular is not the sign of steroid or PED use (what the freak is PED anyway, i remember back in 99 hearing McEnroe complain about Creatine being a steroid...pluses or minus against it it is not a steroid way to much ignorance on subject of PEDs)

no idea if she is or isn't 'doping' but see no muscle on her that can't be supported by proper diet and exercises. she has ripped arms but little definition on legs for how much muscle she has...shocker of shocker she is not only a tennis player but an athlete too, shame on her (sic).

    don't be so insecure.....

    Stosur does serve bombs.

But to your point, I agree. She spent hours as a young person trying to copy Pete Sampras' serve. Hard work does pay off, especially if you have natural talent and good genetics.

:) Maybe I mis-spoke, Stosur does serve bombs. But not Serena bombs.

Shriekapova however, I don't see any improvement in her serve. You'd think after shoulder surgery, you'd change your form to be more efficient and less taxing on the shoulder. But no, just like the rest of her game, she can't adapt.

Dumb comment. Yes, Sharapova is 6'3" but she has a slender build. Serena is built more like a man who's a gym rat. Just look at her shoulders and her thighs - they're thicker than most of the men's players. It absolutely gives her an advantage in being able to consistently serve bombs. I don't think Sharapova was being disparaging at all. She's just saying if she had that kind of muscle build, she'd be able to serve that way too. There is one reason why Serena has been so dominant over the last 10 years. She has more power than any other female player by a comfortable margin. And her power is natural, ie she's not straining her body to have that kind of muscle and power and is able to control it. You look at the handful of other female players who also *look* like they're on 'roids (I'm not saying that they are), they don't have the same control as Serena. It's just a huge, and undeniable, advantage that she has.

She's saying that Serena has natural born physical advantages. Which is true. Maria also has her own kind of advantage - her height and length gives her power despite her not having a muscular build. But against Serena she's at a significant disadvantage as is the other 99% of the WTA.

I saw the interview, and she just seemed disappointed and bitter. She seemed ok on the court after the loss, but I think she got little snippy in the presser because she just kept getting question after question about Serena. No one likes losing, and I think she was just in a bad mood.

But she did say one other thing that seemed a little catty (or I could just be reading something into it that wasn't there). When they asked about Serena's level of play at that age, she said something like, well if plaing tennis is still one of the most important things to you at that age and you can, why not....almost like get a life, or more like setting herself up with an early retirement excuse. Can't find the quote without watching the whole thing again....

With all due respect it's about who is playing now and Maria beats almost everyone with regularity except Serena. And what the heck is "real prime" something you made up?

If I was 6'2" and 150 lbs., I'd bulk up my torso and upper body.
If I was 5'10" and 170lbs of muscle, I'd keep it if I could retrieve wide and short shots.
I'll bet Serena wished she could have RobertaVinci's body. But hit like Serena.

Well, Stosur favours her spin serves, so it's not very surprising. Massive kick. She's also very quick on her feet. She also has an "ATP style forehand". Work, technique, and a bit of luck with the genetic lottery. Sharapova is very thick headed, even more than Federer who thinks he can bash harder than Berdych or Tsonga or grind for longer than Nadal...

No, we expected these professional tennis players, males or females, to be well, professionals. If you lose then you congratulate the winner. You never discredit someone else's victory.

Some players do that all the time.

Or have people already forgotten Fed dismissing Nole's epic forehand return as a "lucky" shot?

Well, in this case, it indeed was a lucky shot on a high percentage serve (well struck outwide slice on first serve, not as threatening as a bomb DTL but high percentage). "Being professional" doesn't mean "outright lie". Even if he was bitter because he sh@t his pants after that shot, it was a lucky shot. One should (EDIT: not) be afraid of calling things by their names. Would Sharapova, granted she'd be built like Serena, serve like her? Likely not with her faulty technique. Would Serena rather be slimmer? Yes, the quote was posted here, but she ain't complaining either.

Serena has said in the past she envies Venus's physique. Venus has had one of the best serves in tennis. Serena said she also envies the reach that Venus has at the net. Sibling issues!

Yeah, I didn't like his comment about that being a "lucky" shot.

But it was nowhere as asinine as Shriekapova's recent tweets and her comments about Serena's physique and serve.

I understand everyone has different types that they're attracted to (or not). What I don't get is why her muscles make people so uncomfortable (sometimes to the point if being hostile). She's an athlete trying to maximize her potential. She's not trying to have sex with you....just relax and enjoy the tennis!

As noted by Lukhas, "Well, some people here expects tennis players to be as thin as mannequins."

It is a childish fantasy born of unrealistic "girl" or Barbie doll fantasties about women. When a woman does not live by those cartoon-like standards, she is attacked. Nothing stable about that kind of mindset.

    Very true.

People need to learn to accept differences, in cultures, in people, in everything. It's hard to believe how society sets a standard, no matter how illogical it may be, and the masses swarm to it, they actually take it into bosoms and believe that's the way it should be.

    It's amazing.

Sometimes I think it's more about how uncomfortable they are with themselves. It's like they aren't secure in their manhood or their sexuality or something. Or maybe they're teenagers who are inexperienced or need to make fun of other people to feel better about themselves. It's just so irrational. Maybe it's just posting while drunk. Again, I'm talking about the really hostile types, not guys who just aren't attracted to her.

I've noticed a severe streak of underdeveloped perceptions regarding women on this board--particularly when their idea is the "girl"/Barbie doll image that was a marketed illusion based on the aforementioned underdeveloped perception, rather than a representation of the various real appearances of women. While men are free to be attracted to any kind of woman, that freedom speaks to brainwhashing when it just so happens that they embrace and sell the very artificial, packaged image celebrated by the usual suspects on this board.

    All so true.

That's right. There are two ways a woman can be a dude: either look like Serena or look like Maria. Muscles = man. Flat chest = man. The standard by which we measure everything is Man. You're absolutely right.

I don't know how Pova plays the game at all with all that tension....constantly clenching her fists before every point. Seems it would not only be exhausting with all that wasted energy but would impinge her serve as well...with so much talk about relaxed muscles working better and faster.
