Sharapova: if I was built like Serena think I'd hit a big serve too

I think Serena would have a better career as an UFC fighter. The fighters below would be an underdog against Serena.

Yes, earning 29 mil a year is not enough to be consider hot. She needs to earn 100 mil.

They don't have a weight class high enough for her. The limit in UFC right now is 135. Dana White is no fool when it comes to marketing.

I had a friend back in the day who was about 5 feet tall and petite. 3 girls, about 5'6" we're harassing her at a bus stop and she beat them ALL up! Being big is an advantage, but heart, skill and quickness can win. So fear not, some day some little Russian doll will conquer the mighty Serena. I hope it's not for a long time!

Sharapova is not natrually built--physically or psychologically for tennis, hence her factory-built mannerisms, quirks and other odd details. Other players just flow into and with the game while fighting it out, while Sharapova seems so much a project--only knowing a few things, which is why she has no plan B, and tends to fall apart if challenged with a game out of her one comfort zone.

Well, that just makes her more impressive to me. She has achieved quite a bit of success on sheer willpower and determination. I think when she's on, she's pretty scary. Maybe doesn't have every skill, but what she does have is great when it's working. But not to GOAT level.

To the topic of the thread, she's a little off in her assessment. It's not about how they're built. Basically, she is up against a GOAT contender (don't want to start a goat argument, just SW is often mentioned as a contender and MS never is). What can she do? Just keep trying. She will win a few eventually. She's just expressing frustration at the helpless nature if her dilemma. She can't acknowledge SW's goatness, so she's got to blame it on something else.

Not sure Serena can make 145# anymore. She is nearly as large as Laila Ali. And not nearly as cut as Francesca Schiavone. http://www.girlswithmuscle.com/images/full/812693650.jpg

Wow! I think she's younger there. She didn't look like that st the FO. Or maybe I wasn't paying attention...

Anyway, muscle is important to a point, but it isn't everything. I've seen plenty of mma fights where the lanky guy takes out the muscly guy, because muscle guy runs out of gas or isn't as quick or has crappy ground game.

She's probably been told she's very pretty, yadda yadda, ever since she was a kid. This focus on looks can be very mannerism-inducing. I think she still manages it pretty well, putting tennis ahead of looks and projection. I think even Hantuchov√°, a less accomplished player, is much more obsessed with looks than Sharapova.

This. I'm not a fan of Williams but being on this site has made me much more sympathetic to the crap she must have gone through to get where she is.

Of course the internet is a perfect place for insecure little boys to go on about their masculinity and talk about how they wouldn't touch such and such a woman when in reality they are not really well-positioned in life to comment.

Qft. I sometimes can't believe the stuff that gets said...

It's kind of funny, though. All the haters have made me a bigger fan. Normally I tend to like underdogs. She gets so much crap that it makes her feel like an underdog to me even though she is incredibly dominant. So it's like I get the best of both worlds. With every win she sticks it to 'em and I love it.

Hatred (many types), jealousy (of her success over their chosen fake tennis goddess in a sport they feel "is not made for her..."), and other baseless, mindless reasons are the motives for the sickening, anti-Serena posts seen on this board, with this thread being the latest example from the usual suspects.

Well said--so very true. Post of the week.

They can't attack Serena's tennis so they stoop to picking on her appearance. At least in the midst of their childishness their true colors can be seen. People who focus on such things about a person for the sole reason of being spiteful shouldn't warrant one's attention in the first place, because lets face it, attention is all they're after

For the record those MMA fighters would put up a better fight than Sharapova ever could. I wonder if they wail like banshees while throwing punches?

Even if Sharapova has shoulders like the incredible Hulk, she wouldn't beat a physically fit Serena Williams.

Samantha Stosur, Francesca Schiavone are very fit women. Sharapova is annoying, I get that she wants to maintain her femininity, but her dig at Serena is out of FRUSTRATION.

Some women are really catty, Jelena Jankovic and Dominka Cibulkova also said Stosur "serves like a man" because they LOST to her.

That's when you know some women are petty, they bring up the plays or hits like a man because they aren't good enough to beat other women like Serena or Stosur.

No, your comment is ignorant and sexist, there are multiple reasons why Serena is better than Sharapova.

Serena is not built like a man she's a physically FIT WOMAN! Get, it through your SEXIST SKULL, a woman can be physically fit and have muscles and is still

BE A WOMAN. Female athletes, aren't porn stars, they aren't models they are women whose job is to excel at sports not be the wet dreams of sexist heterosexual men who put unrealistic standards on WOMEN!

The obvious, is Serena is a superior athlete she moves better around the court than Sharapova. Maria has improved her movement somewhat but she is still not quick enough.

Sharapova has no variety she doesn't have strategy either she just hits the ball hard.

Sharapova admitted after winning Indian Wells she won't lift weights because she wants to maintain a feminine image.

Remember, female athletes struggle with being feminine due to the sexism of heterosexual men.

Heterosexual men like some of the male posters on this forum ridicule women who don't live up to their unrealistic sexist beauty standards.

A female athlete can be fit but not too fit for the straight guys or else they will call her names which I won't repeat.

The obvious is Serena serve technique is better than Maria's. Notice, Maria's toss is erratic it goes all over the place and breaks down when she's under pressure.

Sharapova is also ONE DIMENSIONAL she's a brainless ball basher she hits the ball hard that's it.

Sharapova has a slim build but she has a lot of fat on her body she isn't as physically fit as she can be. Also Sharapova has BROAD shoulders anyone with eyes can see that.

Sharapova is also a GIANT the woman is six foot three with her height and reach she should be serving huge first and second serves.

Well said--but you have to remember you are dealing with underdeveloped child-minds thinking Barbie is the symbol of womanhood.

Yes, Serena is superior to Sharapova in every conceivable way.

..yet she--and her delusional supporters always expected her to be some sort of force on the tour.

    Amusing.

Too late. Since she believes in images, one can observe her extremely boxy, broad shoulders are not on the feminine side.

She should be comfortable with that--instead of pretending she's some sort of Barbie-doll model--which she is not, contrary to the idiotic lies of the worst of her fanbase.

They are immature, and it speaks to their general hostile opinion of women, as seen on this board.

She was not trained well, and lacks natural talent for that, no matter her height.

The sad thing is that many people buy into this lack of realism and try to emulate it in their own lives. Then, when a person doesn't fit the stereotype and is a "regular" woman, they think she's the one with the problem.

    Totally brainwashing.

    This is a great post.

It's sad the box that people try to put women in. It's even sadder when women, of all people are so uninformed that they go along with it. It just shows a lack of intelligence and reasoning ability.

Some men, you expect that from, but women? Ridiculous.

Yes, it is brainwashing, as you see in nearly every thread where Sharapova is mentioned: some immature, media-reared kid will post 6 or a dozen photos of Sharapova, then claim she is some sort of "model." Every part of this kind of post seems like a child having a crush, where any fantasy--no matter how out there--becomes part of the little story created, when the rest of the world has not jumped on the bandwagon.

In other words, when Serena found her average level, she couldn't win a game.

I'm still waiting for the day when Sharapova loses to Serena and actually tells the world that Serena was just too good, that's why she lost.

I don't need to check out unlike some people here. I know what they look like. Big muscles for fast and explosive short distance running. They're ripped. In fact, tennis is the exception, not the norm. Even if girls aren't some She-Hulks, they aren't even "toned" like the skinny dudes on the ATP tour like Djokovic either, or like Mauresmo or Schiavonne are/were. I guess you make more money off the magazine covers than on the court. WTA isn't going to change if it goes on like this: a handful of players taking their career seriously, and the other getting money doing something else while playing tennis. Well I'm no judge about what they feel like doing, but they shouldn't be complaining they get beaten by the ones who take their tennis career seriously.

True. Sharapova seems to believe smacking the ball with no additional training (serious training) is enough to get her through her career. Superior players proved that wrong, yet she still makes excuses for her faiures, instead of realizing she is the problem.

Surprised no one has questioned how a player is on her deathbed, comes back to lose 1st round at the FO, then suddenly dominates her sport at 31. Even AA would wonder, not only Sharapova, wassup?

Because it isn't a chronic injury, like Djokovic's asthma or Venus' problems. It's akin to a broken bone, but knocking on death's door. I'm exaggerating, but basically she's over with it. And mostly because she already was kicking @sses before, and still does kick asses after, while the WTA field got considerably weaker.

Marias Problem is not a lack of power. she still smacked a lot of aces and winners, she is a big Girl that hits hard.

her Problem is that she only has one game: to overpower and intimidate her Opponent. she is very good at that but serena is a Little better at that but Maria has no plan B.

Its not just Serena; Azarenka is fearless when facing Sharapova and has a good record against her. It may seen like it, but Victoria has a plan B as well, which is why she troubles Sharapova.

That's true but Azerenka is also a seriously hard hitter who can match Masha in the power dept and of course is faster. I just think Maria has hands of stone. She's just not that kind of player who can incorporate different style into her game, especially given the lack of foot speed.

People who don't like her or are frustrated at her losses to Serena keep saying all she can do is hit hard.. Ok, yeah and she hits harder than 99% of the tour. How many players have ever possessed Masha's fh up the line? I know there is this Justine Henin fascination on this board but she was a major exception to the rule with her ability to improvise.

Furthermore, the way Serena played in the French Open final no one was going to beat her anyway. Not Sharapova, Azerenka, Seles, Graf, Henin, Navratilova, Evert, Sanchez-Vicario. No one.
