As much as I hate to say it, this court just doesn't allow a one dementional winner. Got to be able to at least volley or drop shot... or crazy angles... Maria can't do any of those very well... she hits deep penetrating balls from baseline to baseline. Court absorbs a lot of the pace and since she's one dementional, opponents can move back without fear.

Just like Roddick, Safin, Davenport and about 50% of the other pros That's why guys like Federer & Santoro, and women like Henin & Muresmo are so refreshing. Also, refreshing because they are successful and hopefull more young 'uns will copy their style.

maria gets healthy she'll have plenty of wins over the top players. she did beat lindsay in LA. she showed what she can do in the first set. and at 18.

I really feel Clijsters could and should take a strangle-hold in women's tennis, she can play with the best of them.

marias coach should tell her to scrap that lefthanded shot. she should be using a backhand slice when stretched wide.

Agreed. Like learning how to hit drop shots and volleys. The talking heads on ESPN say she practices at the net. But in matches she looks completely lost up there.

2-2 - looks like the first to break and then hold will win.

Like with Roddick (who can barely volley to save his life) it's not just practicing the stroke, but moving with the volley, and anticipating the return. Success at the net isn't really something you can force.
I agree that getting better at the net would help, but I'm talking about a slice backhand, or some side spin roll shots to take her opponent off the court.

if the linesperson couldnt tell that they were out/in i doubt henin could, so she doesent really have a reason to not be smug about it, not like she knew for a fact those calls were wrong

That shot of Maria's that knicked the sideline -- you could see on replay why the lineperson called it out.

If Sharapova could muster just a serviceable net game she could win matches like that easily. She had so many short balls she should have hit and come to the net behind. But she doesn't have the confidence to do it - and JHH got back into those points and won many of them.
