Has it gone even louder and longer, and also has become a two-tone sound bomb? Even the comentator noted "it's... hard on the ear".

I would be constantly complaining to the umpire about this, you dont need to make any heavy breathing noise while you hit a tennis ball, your lungs dont function like this until after you hit the ball, completely unacceptable.

For me, turning the volume down doesn't help. Fernandez pointed out today that Sharapove shreiks after the ball is hit (though of course Mary Jo defends it anyway). She's a good player but it's a turn off.

i cant even watch highlights of the match. maybe she can endorse hearing plugs.

So, what is the official rule on grunting? do other players have to complain to WTA for them to say something? I have been hearing about this for a year but any future results or decision.

What is ridiculous about it is that it gets louder and Louder and LOUDER as the match progresses. Today when it went into the third set she just screamed in an attempt to scare off her opponent, which is just BS. Dementieva moans all the time, but its a constant level.

i believe sharapova shrieks so loud not to pump herself up, but to intimidate her opponents. ive even heard some complaints before that the shrieks r so loud her opponents cant hear the ball hit her racquet, which supposedly messes up their game or something. basically, i think her shrieks r for more than just self-motivation.

Sharapova is loud, but I think V. Williams was louder when she had to come back from behind to win her third(?)-round match.

If Sharapova and Williams play each other, I would be sure not to tune in.

I had a good laugh when the glass/window of a tennis store shattered in Sharapova's Canon commercial. That's exactly what would happen if she shrieked!

I remember that one of the commentators said that Venus and Sharapova screamed like they were in a chamber of torture last year at Wimbledon.

she can shriek all she wants but she won't get another Wimby......not this year though.
IMO such loud shrieking should receive a warning, but I suppose they would only do it if her opponent complained.

Her screams definitely sound like they're even louder this year at Wimbledon.

The English should reintroduce the Grunt-O-Meter made for Seles a while back...

I agree that her shreiking is at least part gamesmanship. Interesting how the shreiking level changes from opponent to opponent, and even over the course of the same match....

I guess we need someone like Ivan Lendl.

Back when Agassi played in his denim shorts, Ivan Lendl actually got the umpire to silence Agassi's grunting.

Funny, over the years, Andre managed to tone down his grunting considerably ... all on his own.

I'll never understand how anyone can scream like that on every single ball. Nadal also. And the funny thing is that neither of those players make any noise when they're hitting in practice, even when they're hitting hard. Legalized cheating is right.

It is intentional but not necessarily in a bad way.

Many juniors are encouraged to grunt because it facilitates good breathing and helps them deal with their nerves. Rather than succumb to your nerves, you can go on the offensive by grunting ... sort of similar to martial arts' kia.

But Seles, Sharapova, and the Williams sisters are way too loud.
