Should Coaching Be Allowed In Pro Game

Martina Navratilova was commenting during a match a couple days ago, and she said that she thought coaching should be allowed. Today as she worked the Peer/Kuznetsova match, she continually mentioned Kuznetsova looking at her coach.

I'm personally against allowing coaching. She says that most other sports do it, but do we want tennis to be like most other sports? There are few sports where it is primarily you and the other player out there, a true test of physical, emotional and mental aspects of self. I think players today rely too much on coaches, and don't think for themselves out there. Once you step out on the court to play the match, I think everyone else needs to be left out of it except the lines personnel and umpire. What are your thoughts?

As a pioneer in the sport of tennis Marina Navratilova, I wouldn’t expect her to be for the coaching. Tennis is an individual sport as you said and the whole concept to me since I started playing was to go there and fend for yourself. It is understandable that you may look at your coach for some kind of moral support, but at the end of the day, the results are based on the 2 players on court.

I don't like coaching during the match. I think it is ridiculous when the coaches come onto the court during the womens matches. I don't how effective it is, but the players seemed frustrated talking to their coaches between sets. I remember Hantuchova yelling at her coach asking him what more he wanted her to do.

I like tennis pretty much the way it is. The two players have to figure each other out before the match and on the court. Tennis should keep it's uniqueness and not have coaching oncourt or in the stands during matches.

I think its no big deal if a coach yell out indtructions from the stands during a match. But no need to put the coaches courtside and add another distraction to the players.

Whether tennis is like or unlike other sports is not the issue; it is simply unfair. Many players don't travel with a coach, especially lower ranked ones who can't afford the expense on the road. Creating a rule that favors more successful players is outrageous.

Boxers have cornermen, I'm not sure what the big deal is about coaches in tennis.

This is an excellent point! It reflects a different angle but a great argument for not allowing coaching.
