Well, as the OP, I started this thread to see beautiful, handcrafted watches, auto or manual. Many collect, and I thought it would be interesting. Watches are jewelry, as you correctly pointed out. In fact, until I got my Panerai, I didn't really get it, either...but now I love it. Sure, I get compliments on it, all the time, but I bought it for me....i value aesthetic beauty and craftsmanship.

I understand the bashing, there are certainly other things for one to spend money on, but this is why we are free to spend money as we wish, and in fact your argument could be applied to almost anything luxurious.
So enjoy your timex, but please, let us discuss our sub-culture in peace.:)

^ I find it Hilarious that Jadcob & Co, a New York watch brand pretends to be Swiss just cuz some component of their timepiece was made there. That would make Boeing jets Canadian and HP printers Taiwanese. Heck, it would make ALL products Chinese.

All cars driven in USA are American made because the license plate is made there.

I think they're referring to the motion, no?

i suggest you call it quits before your obsession consumes you utterly. many great men have gone mad chasing the elusive definition of a 'luxury watch'--two commonplace words, but when placed side-by-side, transform into a riddle of haunting, otherworldly complexity.

Where is your evidence to support this claim?

These things are absolute tanks! I've had mine 10yrs without a single issue. My parents have one that is over 35yrs old and still works fine. Just superb in every way. Like the way they used to make Mercs (mine finally "retired" to be a Tunisian taxi at 723,000 km and is apparently over 800,000 now...)

There are very strict rules around what allows an Marque to carry the "SWISS MADE" label on the dial. Jacob & Co don't. They only claim that the movement is SWISS MADE, in this particular watch the movement is an ETA and they are therefore perfectly entitled to do so.

    Cheers

The movement is the really important thing, anyway. I personally don't care where the rest of the watch is made as long as the movement itself is Swiss made.

You know damn well what I'm talking about. There may be rules as far as putting the label on the watch itself is concerned but clearly there is nothing that prevent them from spraying around the word "Swiss" without mentioning the movement in their ads and commercials, which is EXACTLY what they did there on that page that was linked. Go read the title:

It is literally written "Swiss made Quartz watch"

Once a passer-by (let's say an idiot or a housewife or whatever... take your pick) catches that and reads it, it's gonna make first impression (marketing 101). Very unlikely that after reading that headline the person is gonna indulge in some lengthy thought-process about whether or what part of the product is made in Switzerland and what part isn't.

Now that's a genuine luxury watch. Best one so far.

Why bother with regularly winding up a watch when you can just put in 10 AA-batteries and be done for a year? :)
