Hard to believe McEnroe, Nastase or Tarango didn't provide us with one.

When McEnroe and Nastase met in the 1979 US Open, they spent the majority of the time disputing calls and abusing officials. So much so that Nastase was defaulted. The chair was replaced by the referee and Nastase was reinstated.

Or at 1995 Wimbledon, when Tarango walked off the court after a barrage of disputes with the chair, then his wife ambushed the umpire after the match, slapping him in the face.

Or the 1999 RG final between Hingis and Graff, when Hingis crossed over to Graff's side of the court to point to the mark. Ultimately, she was docked two points. Then she started serving underarm! After the match ended, Hingis burst into tears and ran off the court.

After falling to the ground at 2001 Wimbledon, a ball rolls up Sampras's shorts and he summons a ball boy to remove it.

Yeah, an uncharacteristic sign of a sense of humor from Pete on court. That was funny!

This is definitely the creepiest thing I've ever seen happen during a pro match. It could be on a NAMBLA poster it was so odd.

Although she had nothing to do with it, Graff had to be embarrassed when Monica Seles got knifed by that psychotic German guy.

I remember watching the replay that day. I wanted to personally evicerate that mans entrails through his rectum with that very knife for daring to even step on a court and threaten a player, let alone actually attempt to murder a tennis pro.

Connors vs Barazutti at Forest Hills

1976-1977 or so, US Open quarters or semis (?). Connors hits a ball close to the line, Barazutti asks for a linesman to look at the mark (2nd year that the US Open was on clay). Connors runs to the other side of the net, erases the mark with his shoe and runs back to his side. Barazutti should have beaten the snot out of him for that, and Connors should have been defaulted. Utterly unsportsmanlike and disgusting.

He said "Whole" not "Wh0re." Thats why he flipped out after getting defaulted. I think I would be just as pissed, getting defaulted for something I didn't say.

LMAO, he should lose the point automatically, then they should throw a point penalty on top for crossing the net.

Unfortunately Conners and JMac could get away with anything they wanted to while they were at the top, once they started losing star power the umpires got more strict :| .

I'm not understanding this one,Did Tanasugarn not realize what game they were playing?Or did you mean point?I could see losing track of a point or two but two games?Or was she just being arrogant and celebrated "knowing" she would win?Sorry just trying to understand...

She thought it was Game-Set-Match. Everyone got a kick out of this one, even Tanasugarn once she realized her faux pas.

Well, since he's my all-time fave, I recall a thing or two about his career. Still shocked none made the Top 10--these are "no brainers."

At the 1990 AO, in his 4R match v. Pernfors, McEnroe was disqualified for swearing at the umpire, supervisor and referee. He was ultimately defaulted for swearing at the umpire, intimidating a lineswoman and then smashing a racket.

    On Connors and Barazutti, cont'd

Wish Barazutti had treated Connors like Clark Graebner did Nastase. Story has it that Graebner, a big guy, approached Nasty at the net and lifted him up by his shirt about 6" off of the ground, telling him to cut out his crap. Nasty never bothered him again.

Someone should have done the same to Mac. Seems that neither he nor Connors got the spankings they deserved as kids...

"Embarrassed" is not the right word. Graf was shocked, was crying in the press conference the next day.

I know it has been rehashed again and again in the internet (most certainly in TTW as well) - but no-one knows whether that psychotic "German guy" (would you have said "U.S. American guy" if Seles had been attacked by a U.S. citizen in Los Angeles .... ?) attempted "to murder" Seles. The attacker was convicted for causing bodily harm with dangerous means - and not for attempted murder. We should not overdramatize this sad incident. Even if we apparently don't like those "Germans" ....

Wetheim is very young & has very poor knowledge of the history of the game. He never saw most of most of Mac's greatest hits. And he never saw nasty play. So that list mainly covers the most uneventful time of tennis(early 90s to today) where all players are choir boys who love each other. How can Renee Richards not be on the list? or the spaghetti racquet? any year of the 70s had more bizare tennis moments than the entire last decade combined. i mean Cecil Mamiit? who cares?

and he seems to concentrate on post match interviews/trophy presentations, etc. was watching some old lendl matches, he was hilarious, cracking on sponsers, stupid questions from reporters-
Post match interview after Lendl got destroyed by Mac in a final:
Reporter: So Ivan what does this event do for your confidence in your game?
Lendl:This doesn't do anything for my confidence, I just got crushed.

in the 80s he was considered boring. today he would be considered a marat safin type personality.

and as far as Mac tirades go, the '87 US Open match vs Bobo Zivojinovic was classic. I still can't believe he wasn't defaulted. cbs' commentators were apologizing for the non-stop profanity.

It should still be common sense to somehow penalize the players for breaking the rules.

If there no consequence for breaking them, why have rules in the first place?

What??? What did you think he was trying to do...scratch her back??? Give her a massage? It was inches from her spinal cord! And, yes, the crazy German guy (and we say German because it is relavent to the story) actually did say he wanted to kill her when interviewed by authorities later. He was actually going back for a second stab when he was stopped. Let's call a spade a spade, shall we?

    You're right. Good video.

Roddick gets a lot of heat on the forum, but he has proven over and over that he is a man of integrity. It happens often that when he is awarded a point unjustly, he will stop play and have the point given to his opponent. Didn't he even lose a match on one such occasion? Two years ago, wasn't it? Slam him all you want, but when an opponent plays him, he knows that Roddick will not cheat to get the victory.

Not quite. In the 2004 Wimbledon against Federer, Roger hit a dropshot that Andy tried to get to. Ball bounced twice before Roddick got to hit it across the net, the umpire called the score but Roddick continued on. He argued(like he does a lot of times) that nobody heard the umpire make the call. The umpire insisted that he did and Roddick said " When we see the replay, you need to cover your *ss". They played the replay, not only did the ball bounce twice, the umpire called the score.

    Yes, let's call a spade a spade.
He wanted to injure Seles so she could not play tennis for some months.
Which he exactly achieved. That at least is a fact.
And he never said anything else. Fact.
He even left behind a letter to his family in advance in which he explained that he only wanted to injure Seles. Fact.
He used a boning knife, perhaps the least suited type of knife to kill someone. Fact.

The attack was tragic enough. Why blow it out of proportion?
Only to elevate a U.S. player (Navratilova? maybe even Seles??) to GOAT status?

That has been discussed in r.s.t. ad nauseam - a sharp kitchen knife, from behind, right across the throat. No chance to survive.
But now let's end this disgusting topic ....

I think in the Malisse incident he said "it was a whole ball out" and the chair thought that he called the lineswoman an a55hole so then he was defaulted from the match.
