recently there have been ads about this new game for the Nintendo DS
and how it will improve peripheral vision, hand-eye coordination etc
    with exercises

    I'm just wondering how exactly?

last time I heard looking at screens for a while had the opposite effect?

You're talking about flash focus right? I got the Japanese version which is the same thing except in Japanese. I can say it does help you hand eye coordination to an extent. The mini games get harder and harder as you lower your age. The lowest age is 20. My friend who has great hand eye coordination can only get 21 at best. I get around 25 26 at best. Though I think translating this to tennis can vary in results. If you can imagine the same focus you have when playing the game, then it's possible to have that same focus on the court. Just my theory though.
