With Sharapova and Azarenka now out, and none of the remaining women being shriekers, I will be able to watch the women's semis without having to mute the sound!

Unlike those two, Serena doesn't shriek in every point

I don't find her grunting nearly as annoying.

Maybe because typically it really is more of a grunt than a shriek. Although she does let loose every now and then - in retaliation?

And it's not on every shot. How fake is it when Maria/Victoria hit a puff shot with a full-on shriek?

Indeed. There are other culprits in addition to the obvious high-profile ones.

But at any rate they are all gone!!!!

Azeranka does vocalize, but i don't think its fair to compare her to Sharapova who absolutely screams during every ball strike.

and some of the shrieks from the female players should not bother you all so much, at least the guys! Ivanovic's for example...

Sharapova is the absolute worst. They turn into banshee wails that get progressively worse as the match gets tougher. It's impossible to watch her play without using the mute button.

Why are you making excuses for these cheaters? They ALL do it purely to hinder the opponent. All of them are essentially silent in warm-ups. Serena almost never does it when winning against a quiet opponent. Errani resisted the urge to shriek and grunt when playing against her doubles partner Vinci. How does hitting a lazy slice require any exertion, yet they all grunt and shriek as much on slices as on hard topspin shots.

I don't mind Azarenka...it sounds more like a pigeon cooing than a shriek. Kinda soothing.

Exactly, and that's exactly why I think it's ridiculous that nothing is being done about it. It's mere cheating indeed.

You complained about Serena...then ask what does complaining achieve?

Follow your own contradictory position, the next time anyone mentions the horrifying screaming of Sharapova.

If you truly think Serena is worse, then you have a hearing issue and should get that checked out. Not that she isn't loud at times, but it's a different league.

    According to Wikipedia:

    Lion's roar: 110 decibels
    Sharapova: 101 decibels
Gas Lawn Mower, or Truck Without Muffler: 90 decibels
Alarm Clock, or Garbage Disposal: 80 decibels

If it is so ridiculous why are you reading this thread and commenting on it?

I think the screaming and grunting is one of the main reasons that a lot of non-tennis fans don't want to watch matches and become tennis fans - I've had a number of people complain to me about it over the years.

I really don't understand the cowardice of the WTA and ATP. The hindrance rule with respect to the grunting and shrieking should be enforced, period. It should be no different than saying that players need to be present at the court at the starting time and if they are late, they forfeit - no on argues about that. A handful of the worst grunters and shriekers (including, yes, some of the sport's biggest stars) would indeed be opposed to installing sound meters on court and their respective tours enforcing the hindrance rule. But when should the patients be allowed to run the asylum? You know what would happen to tennis if players were limited to the sound of reasonable exhalations relating to exertion, rather than the sounds of castrating a donkey or swinging a cat by the tail? They'd learn to tone down those grunts or shrieks or they'd retire. But let's be honest, no one - not a single player on either the WTA or ATP - would quit in protest. They'd all conform to the rules and you know what else? It wouldn't impact their games one bit. The sport would simply be more enjoyable to watch.

I still have the hope that if enough fans complain, then maybe the WTA will do something about it.

It seriously detracts from my ability to enjoy a match.

Perhaps it is a false hope, but maybe if enough people feel the same way, it will convince the powers that be that this is bad for the game, and something needs to be done.

Maria Sharapova is in FAVOUR of outlawing grunting, but in future generations. Stop it at an early age,it's too late for someone like her to stop now...

Yes I know she has said that.

I'm not aware though that the WTA has set any rules or standards in place, even for future generations. If they don't do it now, by the time the next generation comes of age, they will complain that it's too late to apply to them and should only be for the next next generation, and so on.

Still it's a funny thing for her to say. It's like me saying, taxes are way too low and should be higher, but not for me, only for those that come after me!

Besides, I believe Sharapova could stop if she wanted to. Watch her on the practice court and you'll see what I mean.

That's complete BS. She doesn't grunt when she practices, only when she's playing. It's blatant cheating.

She doesn't grunt when warming up either, but obviously that's because they don't have the intensity of a match situation, she's hardly pounding the ball...

of course sharapova and azarenka almost never hit a slice or dropshot so we don't really know if they would scream with them too:).

Actually, in the Lisicki match a couple days ago, Sharapova hit a slice that wasn't defensive. She screamed at the same loudness.

No, its selective cheating, and her grunt borderline scream is way exaggerated depending on the severity of the point. It also is carried much longer than needed for a grunt.

Funniest thing was hearing Makarova's double partner grunting on a drop lob!!!!!

WTF? Grunting on a finesse shot? That proves they are cheating. I dunno how can someone be focused enough to pull up a finesse shot while grunting as loud as she does. Makes absolutely no sense.

You know what Am I talking about? I grunt while playing tennis, I can't stop it. But it's entirely conected to my strokes. I don't grunt on a drop shot, or finesse shots. I can't. If I tried I'd probably send a lob instead of a drop shot.
I developed my grunting just to help my exhale and inhale pattern. The more power I put on a shot the longer will be my grunt. (not louder, just a longer exhale since I had more time to prepare therefore more time to inhale)

Anyways, her (makarova's double partner) grunt is worse than sharapova's...

    It's like:
    eeeeeeee whyyyyyyyyyyyy.

btw, when I wa watching that double match I just thought that could be the reason Sharapova can't volley.

She misses the grunt. But if she grunts on a finesse shot, she'll miss the volley. Dunno how Makarova's partner developed that ability.

No, it's not. She can go through an entire practice session without a peep. If she can be quiet during practice, why not also during matches? It's nothing but an underhanded tactic to hide the sound of the ball coming off of her strings so it's harder for her opponents to hear how hard and how much spin she just hit her shot

Agreed on this. For me, a little grunting helps with my groundstroke's timing especially when under pressure, but it's barely audible on the opposite baseline.

I cannot imagine that "grunt" in my head..

Of course it is, as is the contention that she couldn't chagne(or Azakenka, who was also quoted as saying she wasn't going to change anything about her shrieking). A few calls of, "point, set, match" and you'd be amazed how quickly they'd get an attitude adjustment.

Serena is the only player to be penalized a point during a match for an excessive grunt... hindering opponent. So the reality is she's the only documented cheater in the above mentioned.

Hardly 'without a peep'. If there are some where she isn't grunting,it's because she's just having a light hit. Training hardly replicates the intensity and pressure of real matches does it?

Not sure if you're being purposely obtuse here. Serena was not penalized for "an excessive grunt" but instead for making a sudden, distracting noise after she hit the ball. The timing of the noise was the main issue.

Once again, you show that you don't know much about tennis, or sports, for that matter. I'm guessing the expression, "You play the way your practice" is completely foreign to you.

Why would you scream just because you're under pressure? If that were the case, every player who normally don't scream would all start screaming only in tiebreaks or in the 5th set of matches.
