....like he didn't have enough already. Now holds the record for most wins in slam matches.

PARIS (AP)—Roger Federer dropped a set before earning his record-breaking 234th Grand Slam match victory to reach the French Open's third round.

Federer eliminated 92nd-ranked Adrian Ungur of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 Wednesday to break a tie with Jimmy Connors for most career wins at major tournaments in the Open era, which began in 1968.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion is now 234-35 in tennis' top four tournaments, an .870 winning percentage.

Ungur, meanwhile, is 1-1; the French Open was his Grand Slam debut.

Seeded third this year at Roland Garros, where he won the 2009 title, Federer is on course for a semifinal showdown against No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who won in straight sets Wednesday.

It was very generous of Sir Roger to gift that set to the low ranked Ungur who will from now on tell the tales of taking a set from the GOAT to his kids and then grand kids while pursuing a women's shoe salesman career.

    5,4,3,2... 1....

NSK walks in to tell you how many matches Rafa is ahead of Roger with age comparison, and what his Slam winning percentage is, as well as pointing out that Nadal has the best ever Slam winning percentage at a single Slam blablabla.

    Great record from Roger :)

Great record and still a few years to come.
Could have had a few more slams in the bag too were it not for messing up on the MPs.

Surprised he dropped a TB set, though, honestly.

Not in the greatest form early on, but here's hoping he plays his way into God-mode.

These records are not important right now. It is only Slams and Olympics which matter.

That's right. That's why we are talking about record number of wins at Slams and not at MC. You seem even slower than usual today.

    Most Grand Slam match wins
    1. Roger Federer 234
    2. Jimmy Connors 233 wins
    3. Andre Agassi 224 wins
    4. Ivan Lendl 222 wins
    5. Pete Sampras 204 wins

Apart from breaking Connor's record, Fed is still in his 30 while Connors was still competing at the slam at 40. LOL

Also Fed is the only player to win atleast 50 matches in each of the 4 Grand Slam Events.

    Amazing !

You realise Connors missed quite a few French Opens and barely even played the Australian Open, nothing to LOL about at all.

I think the one who should be LOLed at is you. Did you realized that Connors played 2 slams per year during half of his career?

Yes I do. Actually, I think the better comparison is how many matches they won in the deeper rounds, or the average matches won per slam appearance.

Batz, I thought at first that the real Sir Roger had decided to come out of retirement to reprise his Bond role as an octogenerian...here's a few working titles and/or plotlines.

The Octospy who Loved Me...OctoRogi travels to Madrid on the trail of the evil vampirish Romanian Svengali who has changed the sacred formula and color of the most precious organic compound known to man...Terd Buttyou. The film's climax (pun intended) features OctoRogi, in a little-blue-pill-induced haze, is rushed to the ER by ballgirl crew after holding trophy aloft for more than four hours.

Moonraker 2...obvious villain role played by buttpicking lefty Monk-like OCDer.

Live and Let (1st serve) Die...OctoRogi attempts to win Wimby crown in seventh consecutive decade.

Don't worry. Your precious Nadal has also achieved plenty in his career and nobody can take this away from him.

I think Batz likes to fantasize that he is British and that he has already been knighted for his services to British tennis!

Despite this, I would STILL pick Connors to play for my life. Preferrably in a monstrous 11 set match or something.

Olympics mean jack in tennis, and you know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. Tennis if zoo new to the olympics, such few have the medal due to it being once every 4 years. Fine for other sports, not tennis.

Proves that Fed has the superior record but not by the kind of margin TMF was alluding (LOLing to).

PS - DFTW is that you :)?

Damn, that's ridiculous considering Connors was like 100 when he retired from playing slams... Good for Roger.

Actually, thinking of this it's more a matter of consistency vs longevity. Had Connors bothered to turn up at the French and AO he'd probably have won 63 trillion (yes, trillion. He was that old when he retired.) matches.

I'm no fan of Federer but it annoyed me the way many people were writing him off two years ago and with each loss the abuse the guy was getting was ridiculous.
There's no mercy for any player even Federer when they lose.
He's in his thirties now and still consistently competing in possibly the strongest top 4 in history.
If you look at it objectively, love him or hate him and his ego (which seems to have calmed down) that's extremely impressive and shows the phenomenal talent of the man.
