i went to play tennis today and in the trash can i found a brand new can of balls. It was opened but the balls had only been used once. I find 3 new balls in the trash quite often. Because some people use them once then throw them out. I looked on the can and with sharpie marker it wrote:"split balls"
i looked at the brand new balls and there was a 1 1/2 inch cut in each one. They made a funny noise when they bounced and they almost bounced like a pressureless ball. Any idea on why they were cut?

    thanks in advance

Well, some folks play league matches where the players are required to open a new can. And some folks consider it a minor expense prefer to always open a new can. Those used balls can pile up quickly if you're opening a new can every match, so some folks just throw them out or leave them on the court for anyone who needs them.

Not sure about the split thing, though.
