Yeah, the problem with Sochi as the most "social network reported" Olympics to date is that it will bring alot of attention to its shortcomings.

    The good news?

If Sochi keeps stinking it up (literally), the next several series of games will be awarded to the US, Japan and other countries that can get their act together and execute.

    The best tweet yet:

They are just like ESPN in the fact that they refuses to show the best athletes in any given sport, just the Americans no matter what their rank is.

I heard about this one and frankly the local officials are screwed either way on it. Kill the dogs and the animal rights people call you barbarians. Let the dogs continue to roam around and bite kids, spread rabies, etc. and everyone else calls you barbarian.

Unfortunately it's the type of problem that needs to be avoided in the first place with proactive spay/neuter programs - which the third world is apparently incapable of doing.

I'm pretty polarized when it comes to the Sochi Olmpics. On one hand, for the average Russian citizens to have to shoulder the financial and material burden of the Olympics only to watch it fail miserably would be devastating. On the other, I would love to see Putin be humiliated

They didn’t seem care about that in the past. Now I can see where they could have a small child who was bit contracted rabies and poisoned. Along with any other creature who ate the bait.

Well, virtually ALL of the media-related people are cursing a storm over this Olympic and its hospitality, that's already a pretty big fail. And the Games haven't even started yet.

You realize the term "3rd world" refers to those countries which were not strictly aligned with either America (1st world) or USSR (2nd world), right? Russia's far from 3rd world.

Doesn't surprise me. If it's anything like it is in Peter, you can't drink the tap water (unless you have filtered water). I dunno if it's the pipes or the water, but it's not good.

The Olympics run on corruption. That's why business and governments everywhere love them. They should be abolished.

The first three toilets seem to be a result of a classic money grab, with the people awarded the construction contract being ordered to make a set number of toilets, but saving money by not providing dividing walls. The last toilet looks like a joke from "Monty Python."

Yes, well, america has many characteristics of a third world country as well:

a corrupt oligarchy in power presiding over an economy rapidly destroying the middle class and impoverishing its citizens while handing out trillions to the bankster kleptocracy.

    LMAO@U, you out-of-control, lactating nipple.

In a thread about the Sochi Winter Olympics, here you are once again trying to hijack it with another one of your predictable "I love America" forays......z-z-z...snooze...

Have I had the pleasure of going to Russia? Yes (via Route 7 from Helsinki to St. Pete's). Have you? Probably not.

So put a sock in it already "Red Star Komrade-Boy Posseur" with your played out, one-trick-pony act. You're about as 'State' as Pete Seeger's banjo.

    ....bag o' wind.

    back-on-topic: The Sochi Winter Olympics

I'm hoping for no incidents, period. Putin eating crow would be at the expense of something bad happening to someone--totally not in the spirit of people coming together however corrupted and commercialized the "5-ring circus" has become.

    I'm hoping for:
    - a Franz Klammer type electric performance
    - the women's ski jumping to have a successful debut
    - speaking of women, a great gold medal game brawl between Canada-US woman's hockey squads
    - that babe captain from Canada's women curling team to compete (yum!)
    - no incidents, no God-forbid you-know-whats to occur
    - any NY Rangers players competing to come out of the Games healthy
    - "Same-day Room Service" at the Sochi Hilton : )
    - an exciting Biathalon competition: cross-country skiing....then stopping to shoot a gun (and maybe eating a hot pastrami sandwich somewhere along the way).

Hope the bad guy/terrorist haven't cleverly slipped some ringer into that event. ^^^

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE COMPETITORS

I did not choose to turn this thread into a rerun of the Cold War ...

and you are the one who engages in childish right wing abusive jibber-jabber at every opportunity.

Does Mother Russia make your lips purse in eager anticipation of a lactating nipple?

We are certainly not having an apolitical Olympics; and an Olympics embroiled in geoplitical and cultural politics will not be a safe one.

Meanwhile Brazil is lumbering on with its albatross:

When Brazil bid for the 2014 World Cup, one of the government's main justifications for the multibillion-dollar expense was an improved transport infrastructure. Along with the Olympics, the sporting events were supposed to accelerate a $400bn plan to upgrade airports, subways, roads and bus links. But projects have been plagued by bureaucracy, inefficiency, corruption and a general lack of dynamism.

With just four months until the opening match, more than a quarter of the 49 original transport projects scheduled for completion before the tournament have been scaled down, delayed or cancelled.

Social networks are filled with anger, dismay and embarrassment.

Is this the Modern Biathlon venue? They keep adding new events. It's difficult to keep track.

Whats all the fuss about ? The games are a lot cheaper than many in the past and a few 30 thousand construction workers got double pay just to top it all off. According to radio programmes in Europe.

I thought it was the most expensive Olympic game in history something like $50 million US. I saw a report that at this rate it would be equal to $400 mil in US terms.

Dudes... It only looks like they spent $50 mil on these Olympics. $50M gets you one minor venue (sans W.C.) if lucky. We're talking $$BILLIONS$$, baby.

    $50+ BILLION.

At let's say $1,000 per toilet, that means we can take communal dumps with spectator seating at 50 million different toilets! It's unbelievable!

These are going to be the best games ever.

    Gold medal!

So that’s how they know folks have been fishing in the toilets.

Russian Officials Fire Back at Olympic Critics
    http://online.wsj.com/news/articles...0001424052702304680904579366712107461956.html

    <snip>
Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, seemed to reflect the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. "We're doing a tour of the media center," the aide said.

So do you have proof that all 50 million toilets are like this?

Thank you, this was very reassuring...

Of course, there is no need for secret surveillance because all bathroom activities are monitored out in the open by KGB officials seated in the public spectator sections. I love transparency!

    GOLD MEDAL!!!!!!!
