They don't have shared toilets there. The picture is of a stall that's missing the wall between the toilets.

There's another picture going around with a toilet and chairs beside it which was taken in Kazan, not Sochi.

Anyone watching the opening ceremony? It's brilliant, so much culture being shown off in that amazing stadium. I was thinking if this were in America what would they have an aerial image of floating across the floor of the stadium, maybe a Big Mac. ;)

It's great to see something positive about the games for a change, it feels like the games have just begun, even though they started yesterday.

It's excellent. Is anyone surprised? A lot of talent in Russia, as usual. And they didn't spare a dime.

Many journalists are saying the hotels that are in are excellent shape and just fine.......it's just a few that did not get done......of course since a block set up for CNN and a few others from the UK press are not ready the tweets and pics of brown water....etc are all over the place.

With soooooo many looking to make Putin and his cronies look bad every single thing is going to be gleefully exploited.

    * You responded (overreacted) to a post by a person who has more 'Soviet-Russian' in his veins than you, me or anybody else here-waaay more.

And what's more, this 'real deal' man with the "PycckaR Aywa" (or dusha') is certainly not a posseur like yourself.

    * "at every opportunity?" That my little garden flower is (to put it politely) an exaggeration (read: a lie)....and we both know it, Spin Doctor. Nice try "southpaw." : )

     * Humor Alert / Standby: Bartelby's got a joke up his sleeve!!!...and he's BOLDED it for effect:

"Does Mother Russia make your lips purse in eager anticipation of a lactating nipple?"

forgetting the incongruity of the 'joke' for a second:
Indeed, color me Pavlovian, Bartelbyovsky! :)

Atta boy Bartelby, what an honor to be skewered by such a rapier-like wit!! : )

    You want "childish" big boy??......

The overriding motive was an entreaty for a peaceful/non-eventful games....and you know it. And people who would choose to, e.g. blow up people are terrorists. What would be your "word" to describe them? Freedom fighters?

Gee, you think so Captain Obvious? Btw, reports of Americans working together with Russians "behind the scenes" has really got to be ticking you off to no end, yes??

It's rather strange to see the apologists suggest conspiracies rather than admit that Sochi has issues.

Again, these are the most social media reported games ever. In other words, there are real human beings physically on site, taking real photos in real time and posting them on the real internet. That there may also be some photos incorrectly labeled and soon alot of funny Photoshops, doesn't make the dozens of real photos suddenly "fake"!

One such real reporter is a gal named Stacy St. Clair. This is her story and THAT is the water that came out of her tap in Sochi.

Gold medal to Russia for tap water that looks like urine!

I think the social media is the issue. Once in a while we would get this water at my apartment in China and they would have it fixed within a day. Back in the olden days, if something like this happened it would be a footnote in your vacation photos at the end of a (hopefully) fantastic trip. Everything is amplified these days.

The community toilets will probably inspire lots of hysterical photos that the athletes will treasure for the rest of their lives. I'm glad the opening ceremonies were successful and now that the games have begun I imagine there will be less griping about hotels and toilets.

The water picture is real. The one of the two ladies on toilets is from a world cup event in 2013.

Speaking of let the games begin how does TW handle posting about different athletic events in the Olympics?

I don’t recall what we did last time, but do the members make different threads or do we use this one?

With the time differences and tape delay we have here in the US, I would hate being spoiled about a game I wanted to watch. I would also hate not coming here talking about tennis for the duration of the games. As long as no score is put in the title I’m thinking that would be the best way to go.

I know that the odds of not seeing spoilers are slim to none however.

Missing toilet partitions and stray dogs constitute a rather feeble line of attack:

Twin toilets lacking privacy partitions have been the object of jokes in the Western media for weeks. Washington Post Moscow Bureau Chief Cathy Lally found them at the Ekaterininskiy Kvartal hotel, where she is staying.

"A couple of weeks ago, there were a lot of conversations about this toilet because one was seen in the biathlon centre. Then, Russians started saying 'Oh no! It's not really like that. That was just a place where the partition has been torn down because they were turning it into a store room.’ So, they were saying that it wasn't true that there are a lot of double toilets. Well, here we have one,” said Lally.

A maintenance worker at the hotel, Pavel Osipov, said partitions are going to be installed.

"The partitions and the doors will be installed tomorrow. We apologize to the hotel guests for the inconvenience. This toilet is just not finished yet," said Osipov.

Toilets with the plumbing that is required, is far more expensive than the same space being made into a storage room imho.

You never see whether there are any doors in these supposedly twin toilets?

So if there are no doors and no partition then the toilet is unfinished.

Turning unfinished toilets into social media propaganda is clever, but if that's the main drift of the attack then it's pretty feeble.

The statement above was saying they were turning a two seater restroom into a storage room. I was pointing out that it would be an expensive storage room given the cost of the toilets and plumbing that they had there already installed, and the fact that it would cost them more money to rip it all out again.

VERY disappointed in the team costumes for the opening ceremony. I guess everybody wanted to go for the conservative, toned-down look. At least the USA and Germany showed some personality with their getups. My favorite was the Neon yellow & green combo worn by Liechtenstien (or was it Lithuania?). Liked the hats that Spain & the U.K. sported, as well as the Canadian team's gloves w/the maple leaf on the palm.

anyone wonder why NBC feels the need to tell us how bad Russia is constantly?

Every former Soviet country that came out to walk we had to be told how bad Soviet rule was.

They start the coverage off telling us how they are gonna showcase the humans rights violations of Russia.

I thought they where covering an event not selling propaganda.

All in all, a very impressive opening ceremony despite the rings glitch! I loved the doves of peace section! Maria brought the torch in and it was good to see Tretiak co-light the flame with Rodnina. I guess he survived being Eruzione-d!

It wasn't on the massive scale that the much larger venue offered the Chinese but it was technologically more impressive! The stadium was constructed in such a way to allow a "conveyor belt" procession of sets to sweep through the venue. The visual projection system utilized a lot of techie refinements made in the last six years that enhanced the presentation. Costumes were awesome! It was a great show, full of historical drama, wonderful music (come on, it's Russia so they have a lot to choose from!). It's worth downloading a replay!

Bummed out. I was totally thinking Putin would ride in shirtless on horseback, pull a bow off his back and shoot a flaming arrow across the stadium to light the Olympic torch. :(

Russia is a capitalist country last time I looked, but that only happened twenty years or so ago so you might not have caught up.

Obviously NBC has not caught up with the capitalistic turn in Russia either.

    Its easy to see.

Moscow was full of collective man-machine displays, whereas Sochi is techno-spectacle.

I worked a long day and am just getting through Thursday night (god knows when I'll get to opening ceremony). Just want to say Dang! That Japanese guy, Yuzuru Hanyu, in the team figure skating was soooooo good! Not just great jumps but great choreography. Just one of the best performances I've seen. Got a 97.5 or something like that. They said he recently had the highest score ever, like a 99. I hope he does this well in the individual competition. Just so fluid....nice!

Yeah I saw that too, and I know next to nothing about figure skating except those jumps take exceptional athleticism and to be honest, frightening to watch (ankles and knees yo!). But that kid, Yuzura Hanyu worked it! He was finger snappin' good.

He's good and he knows it: :)
