So our team is set to play a team next week in league that has 13 players on their roster. Only 4 of the 13 have previous league play experience, which at a 4.5 level seems a bit odd. Two of their 9 players that have not played league before are rated at 3.5 and 2.5 respectively. One of the 4 that have a history has not lost a doubles match since 2005. When I put all this together it seems to me that something is funny. What are any of your thoughts?

I wonder if they're from a club that doesn't have many people and could only throw everyone together.

Other than that... Just watch them play and see what they do. Keep your section co-ordinator's number on hand, just in case.

I don't get why that is odd? Are you concerned about sandbagging or that the team is not good enough, to play in the league?

I'm inclined to think this 4.5 level team you described is either going to be one extreme or the other....i.e. big-time sandbaggers OR maybe they're just awful and had to scrounge around just to fill-up a roster.

But you should already have a point of reference...how did this team do against other teams they played earlier in the season? That should give you a better idea of how good/bad this team might be.

(On a separate/sidenote, I don't think it's odd at the "4.5" level to have a number of unknown self-rated players roster on a particular team...as these could be junior-college/former college players that are transitioning into USTA and the whole "NTRP" thing. It's very convenient for them to self-rate at 4.5 and be an asset for 4.5 league teams).

Thanks for the input. We have only had two weeks of league so far and one had most teams rained out. The team in question lost their match the first week 2-3 so I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes. Any other input would be appreciated.
