I will be going to the Sony Ericsson Tournament for the first time....for those who've been before, I have a few questions. I'll be driving there, but seeing where the tournament site is - out on Key Biscayne - I'm wondering about transportation.

Driving to the tournament site itself seems out of the question, so I'm thinking that a hotel close to the causeway is best, but how does everyone get out to the site - shuttle buses from the hotels and/or cabs I assume.

Any tips on places to stay, etc. would be appreciated. Is it feasible to stay several miles from the site and hope to find parking closer in? Exactly how crowded is it during the tournament?

I went to the US Open for many years when I lived in NY, and was familiar with the routine...the Sony is all new to me, so any tips would be good.

    Thanks

You can drive to the site, or close to it as a spectator can get! They provide ample off site parking (usually 10 bucks) and then they shuttle people to the entrance (or, really, across the street from the entrance).

I believe some hotels in the Miami area run shuttles as well. Check the SE website, I think there is usually a link to hotels/transportation/parking info.

But yes, it is totally feasible and very easy.

You'll need money for the toll on the causeway, too.

I went last year. I found one of those Miami Beach hotels on the cheap on one of those websites (hotwire) really, really cheap. The drive to Key Biscayne was only 20 minutes. The previous poster is correct in that there is plenty of off-site parking with free shuttle buses.

    Thanks

    Thanks...

I did find some info on the tournament site that explained the off-site parking and shuttle....

One other question...on the map, there are several large parking lots right across the street from the site.....I am assuming these are for media, officials, tournament staff, etc......and not for the general public. The site seems to put "public" parking a ways back from the site itself....correct?

It seems easier to get around than I thought so I expect to be fine...

    Thanks again

Yeah, those lots right across from the street...not for us! ;)

They use regular size charter buses to bring you in from the off site parking, and it is run very well. There's never really been a wait in either direction. BUt, again, it does cost money, both for the parking and for the toll.

If you're going to rent a car, use the links through the SE site...you get a discount. The first time I went, we ended up picking up our car at the airport from the same agent that waited on Jill Craybas.
