Yea. Sometimes I forget that despite his recent performance, James Blake was once #4 in the world.

He was never much for finesse, but he definitely had power and speed.

Best thing about Blake is his nice guy attitude IMO. Game-wise he's kind of a mug, but he overarchieved so good for him.

Perfect example for the BH thread. He seemed sooo much more comfy using it. It's all about the confidence for Rafa. IMO right that his biggest issue. He was a lot more Relaxed in Barcelona, I think and that def showed in his game. In this video he's just OOZING confidence. A lot of the pressure was on Fed then, so he was just having a great time! Can we have that Rafa back?

There is nothing seriously wrong with Nadal's backhand. I think many Nadal fans are stuck in highlight reels. It is not like Nadal is hitting his backhand 10 ft out or is dropping it in the service boxes.

Also,Nadal's backhand has never been phenomenal.A similar case, I watched Federer play his whole career and I have to laugh when some Federer fans claim that he had a GOAT backhand in his prime by showing a few highlight reels. Federer's drive backhand was never outstanding.

Oh! You misunderstood, I think. I didn't say he has a better/worse backhand now. I just mean he is using it less. In MC I watched him go through a whole match BARELY using the backhand. Then again, this is HC, MC is clay, so not very fair to compare. :)

Rafa is so good on clay that he probably does need to use his backhand yet. Come RG time, Nadal will be slamming 130 mph aces and hitting 100 mph backhand winners by simply changing his grip.:)

Lol it's been forever since I've done one, so I was like why not? Haha :) Especially since I agreed with your post, and like I said in the backhand thread, he hits at least 1 each match that is AO-2009 worthy. It's just mental. I highly doubt come the US Open he won't be going after his bh.

It's amazing how Blake refuses to back away from the baseline when hitting his backhands, just muscling and blocking the balls back. Once you start retreating against Nadal, you're in quick sand.

I never thought Blake could be top 10 let alone top 5. It's really amazing. I know he's a pro and his strokes are pro quality, but his backhand and serve were suspect I thought. His success took me by surprise. Kind of bummed I might never get to see him play live when he's got his A game going, bet that's a lot of fun.

That's the fastest run-around-the-backhand I've ever seen in that point by Nadal.

Yarp he was pretty fun to watch at his peak.

Sometimes I forget that Nadal wore sleeveless shirts and pirate pants. Only he can make it look goofy but cool at the same time.

I was actualy there courtside for that match! :)
Those were the days when James was a "Nadal" slayer, and he won that match pretty handily I must say; Nadal never had a chance; fantastic match from Blake and one thet all Blake fans should savour!

Damn, this topic just reminded me how different everyone plays now :/, Nadal not as aggressive, and how Federer and Blake used to fly around the court

    What's funny about his statement?

Nadal did use to play less agressive.

Yeah, but RCIzzle said 'plays now, Nadal not as aggressive', meaning he used to be more aggressive before.

I know, but it was pretty obvious that he meant that Nadal didn't attack as much and that Federer and Blake moved quicker.

That Shanghai court looks damn fast. No wonder Federer and Blake pounded Nadal there. On courts like that Nadal is anything but the man.

Actually they are not that fast but Nadal was a far more primitive HC'er back then.

His spin doesn't work as well and he can't run down winners. One of the few remaining courts which favors the aggressive player.
