# Speed Stringing

That portion of your statement doesn't sanity check for me; seems like a stretch. I do this routinely, and the base that moves, and only a slight distance. I seriously doubt you have to be so delicate to preclude adding tension. I think if you pulled tension, then released while trying to hold the string with your hand/fingers, and you're unable to prevent it from retracting, you wouldn't be able to add tension by doing something is simplistic as pushing the base toward the tensioner to prevent drawback.

^^ If you watch a constant pull machine after it reaches tension each successive pul is very slight. If your bases are sloppy or you push hard enough you can move the string as much as 1/4" toward the tensioner when you lock the base. Depending on the string that could be a lot of tension. Also any force you add to the base is added to the tension being pulled by the tensioner. If the tensioner pulls at 55 lbs and you push with your hand at 10 lbs you have 65 lbs.

EDIT: And any distance gained when the base is locked adds even more tension. You do not want the clamp to move past the point of pulled tension when the tensioner is removed. You only want it to go back as far as it was before the clamp was moved while tension was being pulled.

Well, since we're talking theory here, all I can say is if it works for you, I'm good with that. Me, I'm in the camp that says the added stress on the base by pushing it toward the tensioner is negligible.

I tried to test out my theory for you but I didn't get too far. I started the main in a racket and pulled tension to 50 lbs. I used a String meter to measure the free string tension at 46 lbs. I clamped the string and released tension. The clamp moved back maybe 1 mm and the tension was 38 lbs. I pulled tension on the next main and measured the same main again and it was back up to 46 lbs.

Released all and started over this time I pulled tension and measured string at 46 lbs which isn't surprising. Then before clamping the base I pushed it with a good deal of force with my finger, before clamping the base, and removed the tensioner. I measured that string then with only the clamp holding it at 59 lbs. I figured I figured I did not need to go any further.

Now here are a couple of questions for you? When using a flying clamps on the outside mains when you tie off and the clamp twists about 1/4 inch how much tension is lost? How much would you have to increase on that last pull to make up for that? Would the increase be the same for every type of string and gauge?

Why not just keep it the same on that tie off?

Pretty much says it all lol.

As for your test, you concluded you added 13lbs of tension to the string with your finger. Hehe ok, well, I'm not saying I don't trust your results, but it's your theory, so maybe if your results were obtained by someone else it would have more credibility.

To your question, for one, I use starting clamps. Moreover, it's another example of over-thinking things in my opinion. I mean, I'm fine with those who want to spend their time tinkering, experimenting with all these different theories, truly I am. Me - I'm a tennis "player/instructor", so if I spend time testing a hypothesis or developing a theory, it's along the lines of what I'm doing on the court.

But hey, more power to ya, man. Like I've said before, I definitely enjoy some of the ideas/concepts you've come up with, as well as your videos, but the notion that one can radically increase the tension on a string by taking out the play of a base just doesn't fly with me. ;-)

I'm with you JSV.

Some stringers that have little else besides stringing, are going way to far. Always interesting discussion, but in the end, won't revolutionize the techniques.

Players that aren't very good won't notice, and the top players only care that they get what they've payed for the service that day.

I'll let aforementioned do the thinking, I'll keep on stringing-
