Noah d. Vilas, 1986 Tournament of Champions final, 7-6 (3), 6-0 Noah was 25, Vilas 33. Vilas' serve here looks different than in the 1982 RG final. There he was still leaning forward into it; here it's almost a vertical jump up to the ball. Arthur Ashe and Barry McKay called the match for ABC. Ashe (who discovered Noah in Camaroon) said that Vilas led the rivalry 8-1 and that he had not been in a final in 3 years. According to the current ATP stats, this was their last meeting, and it left Vilas up by 9-2. Their only Slam meetings occurred at Roland Garros, with Vilas winning in 1978, 1981 and 1982. Ashe put Noah’s serve above Becker’s and behind McEnroe’s. There is no service motion I enjoy watching more than Noah’s. Ashe said: The following are my own stats. Note: one point won by Noah on his serve is missing. I have Noah at 9 aces, Vilas at 1, in sync with ABC’s running count. (Vilas made the only double of the match). Noah hit 21 winners: 1 FH, 1 BH, 11 FHV, 6 BHV, and 2 overheads. Vilas hit 19 winners: 6 FH, 8 BH, 1 FHV, 2 BHV, and 2 overheads. Noah made no return winners, and had 1 pass off each wing. Vilas made 2 return winners off each wing. All were passes. On top of those he had 8 passes – five from the backhand. Neither man had a lob winner. Stats by ABC (statistician was John Gibbs): In the first set, Noah served at 64%, Vilas at 82%. Noah had 5 aces, Vilas 1. Neither had double-faults. Noah had 15 winners, Vilas 17. Noah had 9 unforced errors, Vilas 6. So it looks like ABC was not counting service in the winner totals. And they gave Noah 1 less winner, and Vilas 3 more, than I did. I proofed my work so I can't explain the discrepancy.

I did stats on this match as well & was also confused by ABC's stats. Also, their nets stats were vey different from mine.

My net stats lined up closely with theirs but I can't find my notes on it (including the totals). How many winners did you get?

These were my stats(but I didn't proof them) I had Noah at 20 winners: 1 fh, 1 bh, 10 fhv, 7 bhv, 1 ov Have Vilas at 19: 6 fh, 8 bh, 1 fhv, 2 bhv, 2 ov My return winner stats line up with yours(I didn't count passes) I also have the same counts for aces/doubles. Do you have stats by set? I have Noah at 8 fhv's for the 1st set & 6 bhv's. For the 2nd I have 2 fhv's, 1 bhv's. I have Noah at 16 winners for the 1st set. I had Noah at 28 of 46 at net for the 1st set. Had him at 8 of 15 in the 2nd set. ABC had much lower numbers, if I recall correctly. My serve stats: Noah was 46 of 64 or 72% Vilas was 51 of 62 or 82%

My breakdown for Vilas is the same as yours, and I have the same first-set winners for Noah. In the second set I've got no BHV's and you have 1; I'll bet that's because I marked down one of Noah's leaping backhand volleys as an overhead instead of a volley (it's in the last game). That's actually something I haven't done generally but his leap was so athletic, to me it was more smash than volley. I've got one more FHV than you in the second set: one in his penultimate service game and two in the last. I've found my net-stats, though only for the first set (maybe I never did the second). I put Noah at 23 of 42. Didn't find any notes on how I counted. Nice to have the service percentages, BTW.

Vilas lost to Noah their 81 match.Noah would lose the next match to Victor Pecci at the quarters.Pecci had also straight setted Vilas a week earlier at the Rome semis ( played best of five)
