if you're looking for durability, you will gain nothing from the string savers. They save the mains but w/ a hybrid, it's the crosses that are gonna break first anyway. In fact, you might shorten gut's lifespan b/c you've now raised the gut and exposed it more to contact w/ the ball.

I use a gut hybrid with gosen sheep micro 17 in the crosses. I don't put them in until I see the first fray. Good or bad, I don't really know. Some people think it adds a couple of lbs of tension. I have really no way of measure that accurately...I have been wanting to try a gut hybrid mix. What did you use? I stock several polys, ALU, Poly Plasma, Gosen Polyon?, and Hurricane...Not sure what one I would lean with...

In other words, I don't really have a sound answer for the string savers...

Hi,

you said " They save the mains but w/ a hybrid, it's the crosses that are gonna break first anyway."

I dont think thats correct. No matter what your hybrid the main strings get more wear and tear then the cross. Sure the cross strings might break first if the main is a poly and the cross is gut, but thats a mute point.

Your just plain wrong to say with a hybrid its the crosses that are gonna great anyway. What are you smokin?

I will use the gut with no string savers this time and Im positive the mains will break before the cross.

lol

you must have just made a mistake.

Well, for the last couple of gut main/syn. gut cross string jobs I have had. the syn gut crosses broke, not the gut mains. I do use string savers when I see the gut starting to fray or seriously notch.

I have also used string savers right after stringing and before playing. I didn't notice much of a longevity difference based on when I added the string savers, except for when I waited too long to add them.

some people say they make your setup play like a board.

but for longevity issues, it wont solve fraying at all, it is just desgined to prevent notching.

No, I'm not smoking but I guess I misread your post. With kevlar or poly hybrids, especially, with multi or gut crosses, the crosses will break first. But in your case, yes string savers will extend the life of gut. Of course, your mix begs the question, why would you use a poly cross other than b/c fed uses it

i wanted to use the set up type that the greatest player in history uses. hewitt uses gut main and poly cross as well. also i dont want to do poly main and gut cross because i hate stringing the cut in the cross.

i like to use a gut that has little or no coating, and to string that type in the cross is very hard

I used string savers with Prince Synthetic Gut 17 once and it just felt really weird. I know they're not supposed to really affect play, but it seemed to do so for me. It was stiff as hell.
