Swimming and Tennis?

    What would be a better conditioning for tennis, swimming or running? We have to swim for conditioning and personally I think it's pointless. What does everyone else think?

    why would swimming be pointless? swimming gives you a reduced stress, full body workout.

    Also helps increase stamina. Need a lot of stamina for tennis. And it works all your muscles. So.......

    Uhh no offense to tennis people but it says swimming is the best sport to work ever muscle in your body. Your arms, Your legs, Your stamina, strength but i find it only good as a conditioning method not as a real sport.

    I find it pointless because our coach doesn't do it right. He just tells us to do so many laps and then we're suppose to them. We can rest however long we want so pretty much the way he does it is pointless. If we did like speed drills and stuff like that in the water then it would be good conditioning.

    You wouldnt do speed drills because you arent doing swimming as a sport lol, your doing it as conditioning, so what your coach is doing is right, just doing laps, of course he should monitor you and make sure your exercising all your muscles...

    not a real sport?!? do you realize the it's the MOST WATCHED olympic sport? do you not consider running a sport either? swimmers work hard, dare i say that they're the hardest working bunch out there. i swam in highschool and i spent around 6-7 hours A DAY in the pool (3 hours before school, 3-4 after school). i played on my varsity tennis team and it was a joke compared to what i had to do for swimming.

    Sprinting (not long distance running) would be ideal, since functionally it is much closer to tennis than swimming.

    I think swimming can help you out in tennis because you use both your arms and legs so i rather swim the run except if its hella cold hahahha. =]

    yeah swimming is pretty hardcore, at my school, the swimmers get there 2-3 hrs before school starts and have to practice in what I imagine is darn cold water!, but ask your coach why dont you guys do sprinting and such and also agility and footwork drills like in/on a ladder, those are great for tennis and i think better than swimming, just my opinion...

    When you swim, concentrate more on short sprints, say 25 meters or yard. Do a bunch of these with ample rest in between. This will resemble tennis more than say 1000 m of medium-paced lap swimming.

    That's what I was trying to say earlier that we need to be doing more short sprints in order to get anything out of it. We actually did do short sprints once but the swim coach is the one who made us. Our tennis coach let him take over the conditioning that day but we haven't done it ever since.

    Hell, swimming is definately up their with the most gruelling sports, the training that is put in is pretty hard.

    Yup, and water polo is even more brutal. In terms of conditioning for high school sports, I think wrestling and water polo are at the top. Then swimming and football (if the team has a good program.)

    Swimmers have the best shoulders, bar none (aesthetically speaking).

    That said:

    Swimmers have the worst shoulders, bar none (mechanically speaking).

    I speak from experience in both cases.

    Swimming is definitely not the best conditioning for tennis.

    However, it has its advantages compared to other types of endurance training. The first is that it doesn't involve any impact on your joints. If you're scrambling around on hard courts all day, you really don't need more impact on your knee or hips joints.

    The downside is that most swimming doesn't work the legs through a range of motion relevant to running and jumping, and you can screw up your shoulders if you're not careful with your technique in some strokes.

    Swimming is ok as a general conditioning technique, but I wouldn't make it a training staple for tennis. Sprint interval type training drills on a soft surface, like a grass field, would be far more helpful.

    I would vote against swimming for tennis conditioning, only because tennis tends to put a lot of strain on your shoulders (esp. rotator cuffs), and so can swimming, especially if you have poor technique in either sport.
