Our captain just named our team the flames. I said the names kinda fruity (well I used another choice word). Anyone have any opinions on this name? Some people thought it was bad luck cause it sounded like we would go down in flames.

names don't really matter as other schools refer to your town. everybody refers to my team as concord/carlisle, not as the minutemen

Same here. Teams are referred to either by the last name of the captain, and/or in combination with the tennis center/club the team plays out of.

So unless your captain has t-shirts made up saying "flamer" (if collectively you are the flames, then individually you'd be a flamer--I think) that you have to wear--I wouldn't sweat it. Whatever you do, don't protest too much!! Or you know what they'll say.

I mean, as long as your team uniform is not tight shorts with a sleeveless shirt and a tiara, and you don't enter the court to the disco music of the late 1970s on your iDogs, holding your toy pooches in your manpurses, I think you're okay.

ANyway, man, Flames sounds more hockey-ish to me, rather than gay. Atlanta Flames...Calgary Flames is what comes to mind.

On the other hand, if the pop culture vernacular [flamers] bothers your inner homophobe, maybe just deal with that .... or go out of your way to appear really macho and hetero at matches.

That might include mandatory meetings at strip clubs right after the matches, lots of beer and football-watching...and you might want to bone up on some homophobic jokes and Adam and Steve references.

    Latersss,

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't think a name would give your team bad luck. Flames is an ok team name, although it's probably over-used.

If everyone on the team hates the name, then protest it. Tell your captain that the team won't play unless there's a name change. I recommend changing to The Sharks with a neon blue and black scheme. That's my team name and colors. Best colors ever.

    How about "Flamers"?

    Does that sound more reasonable?

Some good points :p I was just imagining showing up wearing those tight, tight 70's shorts to a tournament. Scary... Maybe stuffing a sock inside too. Anyhow, I wouldnt wear a shirt If we got that name printed on it. I think thats a bit much. Id rather other teams just refer to us by the club name but there are multiple teams at our club in the same level.

If you want to wear 70s diaper shorts with a sock in them to your matches, that would be your decision but your teammates might not want to play doubles with you.

There's a high school near me called the Lower Merion Aces. Coincidentally, they are very good at tennis..

Im with you. Although I think that almost most made up silly sounding names are sort of fruity unless it's from a well established team.

Otherwise I like names that are functional, like the name of the facility or the name of the captain or both.

In our area most names are just the name of the facility, it's usually weird when someone makes up a name like "Net Bangers", or "Spartacus" or something like that because we then have to wonder where the heck they are playing.

The only time it seems cool is when the team is cool and they have been around for awhile, or they move from facility to facility but are pretty much the same team but want to maintain their identity.

Besides, unless you're professing your love for the Calgary Flames, "The Flames" really makes no sense to me. I think in any sport that's a lame name.

"Im a flame, woo hoo! Fear me unless you have a bucket of water or a general lack of oxygen or combustable material!"

Just 'cause people don't pay much attention is no reason to pick the worst name in the book. Like the Orlando "Magic", what it they came up with the San Franciso "Flame"? Cant you captain go with his 2nd choice?

Also, the University of Illinois at Chicago.....Daaaa Flames!

If you guys ever play really poorly, you can call your team the Lames.
Which is nice, if that ever comes up.
