Does anyone know who is doing the Tennis Channel commentary for Monte Carlo? I always catch it when there's one British guy and one American guy... Man, how embarrassing... the British guy says something clever, a nice comment... and then this American joker has to chime in with some lame over-excited comment. His commentary sounds childish in comparison. What a bad contrast, IMO. The American guy sounds like a doofus compared to the other guy. Make them either all British or all American, the combination leaves a lot to be desired.

I think the british guy is "John Barrett" he's really cool, has a nice accent and is very insightful. The other guy on the other hand is as monotone as they get and says the most predictable things you can say. I heard JB with Josh Eagle the former Aussie doubles specialist before, now that was a good commentating duo! Heck throw Pat Rafter and Josh Eagle in a both and that would be the holy grail of commentating!!!

I'm not sure, but I think The Tennis Channel picks up the Skysports (UK) feed and broadcasts it in the US. In other words, they are Skysports commentators.

BTW, I'm assuming TTC didn't broadcast Nadal/Gaudio. After Federer/Gasquet, they picked up Coria/Ferrer. Was there another match broadcast after that?

    Thanks for the info. :)

Susan, I guess we'll see in a little while...it's 11pm EDT now and they've just started the 3rd set of Coria/Ferrer. The coverage is on til 1am so we'll se after that... unless this match takes forever in the 3rd set, it seems like they'll have to show something else. I've seen more Nadal this week b/c of the Monte Carlo coverage than I ever have before. I'm not really a Nadal fan, but he's certainly getting the exposure on the Tennis Channel.

Susan, TTC picked up Nadal/Gaudio at 4-2 in the 1st set at around 11:40pm EDT.

They did throw Eagle and Rafter in a booth at this year's AO. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. Eagle is a natural, has plenty of experience and is Pat's best mate. So he was to be the anchor and invite comments from Pat.
This was on the FoxSports channel and was well promoted beforehand.
Pat is a slow talking drawly Queenslander so that probably didn't help, but I think the main problem might have been that his speech is like that of someone who is partially deaf - which he is.
He was pretty much a fish out of water, but I really hope they've sent him away to get some media training as he has a refreshing tendency to tell the unvarnished truth, e.g. "Flip doesn't really like tennis".
Really need some new blood in Aussie tennis commentating. The Stolle/Trabert pairing had become monumentally boring before Trabert retired.
There is a definite tendency in Australia to employ "name" champions rather than good commentators. This also applies to cricket.
I also like John Barrett but there have been mutterings on other boards/threads that he is making too many mistakes these days.
The Eagle-Rafter combo has great potential.

Thanks. I turned it on at the same time, so I'm watching it now. Not much of a contest.

But facing the Gaudio BH may be good prep for tomorrow's match.

Yeah I was gonna turn it off but figured I'd watch the rest... This match is really showing off how fast Nadal is. That's an impressive part of his game. His feet are just in constant motion...

He said his strategy after playing Gaudio in Buenos Aires, was to keep the ball in play, and force Gaudio to make errors -- rather than go for winners himself. It certainly seems to be working.

Thanks for that Yours!05, I didn't know that! Rafter is half deaf? I'd think he'd need impeccable hearing to aid his excellent balance at net and his general game.

It's understandable that Pat would be a bit too honest in the booth, I think that's his nature :p But isn't revealing stuff like that about flipper good for television ratings??? I did hear about him getting some time with Fox Sports but wasn't sure it was with Eagle because I don't get that channel up here in Canada!

I heard the Josh Eagle/John Barrett combination as I mentioned and really enjoyed it. I'm so used to hearing tennis commentary from American broadcasters: Carrilo, McEnroes, Drysdales (not bad), Enbergs, Couriers, Gilberts (hilarious), etc. etc.

Do you know any background on John Barrett? I have no idea who he is!

    Thanks again for the information,

John Barrett is the voice of Wimbledon to me. Not so much the accent, more the absence of hype and "rahrah". http://tinyurl.com/agl4d
As for Pat's hearing, I believe there is a hearing deficit in one ear, but have not been able to establish to what degree.
    Apparently balance not affected!
