Tennis Serve Help

    Hey guys,

    Just wanted to get a few pointers on how to improve my serve.. All of my serves are flat and kick serves.. First serves are flat and seconds are all kick. I may hit a kicker from the ad court as a first serve occasionally.

    Every time I made a serve in I served from the other court (ad/deuce).. Double faulted once.

    Hitting with a nBlade 98... Strings about to snap. I'm thinking of changing racquets.

    The video took too long to play.

    -- You have a decent serve.

    -- I felt that you brought your right leg forward as you hit the ball. In modern tennis, the right leg kicks backwards whereas the left kicks forward. This is called the "double leg drive" i.e. you land in the court with left, and kick back with the right. Both the legs are moving in opposite direction. All the top ATP players do that.

    You might try leaning in a bit more into the court with your front leg drive.
    This may be the reason your back leg does not kick back as noted above and rather comes around.
    If your weight does not move into the court very much you lose power.
    You land about the same place you started with your left foot.

    Try tossing a bit further into the court while still staying sideways.
    Take a look at Fuzzy Yellow Balls or Procompare Tennis websites.

    The really good servers end up into the court more.

    I bring up these points as my serve looks very similar to yours right now. :)

    Ahh ok thanks. I used to move into the court a lot more, but I found hitting like this to deliver decent power and a lot more consistency. I'll try throwing more into the court again to see if I can build up consistency like that too.
    Also, is it worth developing a slice serve? I never hit them..

    You might pick up Dave Smith's Tennis Mastery book.

    He is world class teacher on Wilson's staff and helps run Tennis One website.
    Book is cheap (23$) and discusses advanced as well as fundamental technique on the serve and all other strokes.
    He feels the slice is a core serve to develop and that most people end up using some type of hybrid slice/topspin for their serve.

    I would think since you appear to have decent form and use a standard continental or eastern BH serving grip that you are already hitting some slice on your serve.

    I watched Henin closely the other night. Her second serve uses a lot of slice.

    As far moving or leaning into the court more, the jump or spring into the court is a product of the force of your upward and rotational thrust-not actually trying to jump.
    Maybe try to move the toss a little bit at first. Keep your head up and if you go at it sideways you will still get plenty of spin from coming up (topspin) and around(slice) the ball.

    Lots of good examples here. Haas uses a pinpoint so you might look at that one a bit.

    You are right, my second serves are all kickers. I was wondering I mean if it would be worth it to develop a slice serve where the ball bends to the side instead of jumping up.

    And yeah I need to spring up I noticed from watching myself =/

    I think it is always helpful to have different looks you can give your opponent.
    All good returners adapt to what you are doing as a set goes on if you are too predictable.

    One big advantage of a slice serve is the returner has to respect that you might use it and cannot overplay to his BH side.
    It is also a good serve to use by slicing into the body.
    If your kick serve is good and slices before it kicks out the opposite way-you can give people real trouble getting any rhythm on their return.

    I like using it down the T on the BH side for a changeup as I hit most serves on that side to the BH corner.

    Your upper body remains too much facing the court (open). Your back should face the court in the trophy position. You don't turn enough the shoulders, nor do you pre-stretch enough your left hip.

    Leg action lacks amplitude.

    You need all of the above in order to be able to cover all angles.

    As others have said, you are essentially arming the serve because you have no torso motion/rotation. It looks like you bend your knees, straighten to stand, and then swing to the side after you lose all of the kenetic energy. At your height, you may want to work on a slice serve with a toss in front to the right, more shoulder rotations by starting with more of you back toward the net, and establishing a swing path that is more toward the net. Ideally, at contact, everything on a first, flat serve should be moving forward at contact - your weight from right foot to left foot, you hips opening, shoulders opening, waist bend forward, jump forward, elbow and wrist bends forwards, etc. In your video, everything is sideways, even on the first serves. One way to practice is by throwing tennis balls at a wall.

    agree

    i agree with all the tips from this fourm.
    yu gotta bend yur knees more
    and use yur hips.
    also try throwing the ball out in front so that yu can get more motion to yur serve.
    if yu look at roddicks serve he uses his whole body and that is why he had reaced 155 b4.
    also i like the nblade and i think yu should change out of it.
    but i do recomend add lead tape to handle so that itll b more easier to move.
