Sup and JRK, do you guys like your cars?

I have heard and keep hearing from time to time that Volkswagens and Audis (since they are made by the same people) are a bit less reliable than say Hondas or Toyotas. I also heard they're a bit expensive to fix if they break down. I don't know how much truth there is in this. I also hear that mechanical breakdowns were much more prone in earlier VWs and Audis (1990's). If that's truth, then there's little to worry cuz I'm mainly interested to know about the current versions of those vehicles.

Did you guys experience any major mechanical troubles while owning your cars? I've never driven or owned a German car. I'm wondering what you guys think about newer (let's say 2006 and forward) VWs and Audis.

I took my beetle from a relative after I bought them a new car. Why? Cause I'm like that and cause I also wanted a "beater" car. I was tired of worrying abuot the benz and so forth.

As far as problems. VW engine has had zero problems. Where you'll get hosed is the little electronics. Like defrost and gas cap lock. Nothing major. The benz has had zero problems.

    Thanks for the info, Sup.

My parents and I are looking for either a compact or mid-size car to trade for the Infiniti since it has accumulated quite a few miles.

Cars such as the new Honda Accord or Civic go are not too expensive and built well, but I like the design and equipment on the Audis and VWs better. Prices on new ones can go pretty high with options and such, but slightly used ones are being sold at much lower prices while being equipped with loads of optional accessories.

My family doesn't have any experience with German cars, but back in the days (early 2000's), the word on the street was that they were unreliable. I hear though that they have improved much since then.

ShcMad, there was a good thread on this in odds and ends not too long ago, I think started by diredesire? Anyway, lots of talk about VW and Audi on the thread. I'll see if I can dig it up for you.

    I HIGHLY recommend Mazdas.

Also, Topaz would be interested in hitting on Friday! :)

Is anyone a member at Fairfax? They have no guest fees this week, and lower court rates.

No problems so far. I have heard about electrical issues though... radio messing up etc. Nothing major <waits for Sappy to tell sob story about his Audi>.

Now is the time to get a car since business is super-slow... you'll have the salesman by the balls. Tell him you don't want to put anything down, super-low interest rate, etc. Then say naaahhh, and start walking out. They'll thrown in all kinds of extra **** to bring you back to the table. Wash and repeat... viola, new pimped out ride!

    I'll look it up. Thanks.

My mom used to drive a Mazda Protege back in 2001. I don't think they make those anymore. It was a good car. Trouble-free all the way through. But, we sold it two years after.

    ShcMad, here it is:

    http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=235784

The Protege was replaced by the Mazda3, which is what I drive. You can get the sedan or the hatchback, and the new Mazda6s are out in 2009, and look *sweet*. Which also means good prices on previous year's models!

Also, JRK, have I mentioned how much I love your avatar and location? :)

Thanks for chiming in, JRK. I think most cars suffer from small electrical issues from time to time, so that's no problem.

I agree now is the time to buy a car unless one gets laid off in the middle of monthly payments.

The 2009 A4 looks stunning, but it's just too much $$ for us! But your red one looks nice as well.

I didn't know the 3 replaced the Protege. The new Mazda 6 looks nice.

Laugh it up... my avatar is a limited edition model. It will expire on Thursday.

Shcmad - The Audi is technically my wifes car. I have a Volvo XC90. I actually want to sell both cars though and get just one new car. I was thinking of the Porsche Cayenne GT since you can put **** in it and it goes fast...

audis are fine as long as you can live with it's little electronic issues. It also comes with free parking at your local repair shop.

Cup O' Sup, you have any big ace on hand? Also do you think full Big Ace will go over well in my K90, I am tired of the no spin.

    TFM,

I forgot to mention something about Circle D that you may want to know. They have a new rule where club members can call ahead for the friday night socials. I didn't know this and a few weeks ago I showed up at 6:15 (for a 7:00pm social), and I was #16 on the list because 15 people called in early. The non-members have to just show up. There are easily over 30 people there this time of year (only 16 players on court at a time). Some people will sit out for up to 90 minutes in between playing if they are unlucky.

So if you go, I suggest being very early.

Yes. Being a software developer on a gov't project has it's benefits, one of which is that nobody is around during the holidays. And even when they are around, no one seems to care so long as you get your work finished on time.

  29. SUP, it would be great to get some hitting in tomorrow.
you gonna string both of em up w/ 15L Duralast?? cuz that stuff is magic when freshly strung.
what time you wanna meet at S&H?
p.s. - sorry to hear the Randy v Sup match ain't happenin. dang it.

Pure(non)Prestige - lotso spin with the FREAKIN BABOLAT!!!! geez... i wish we had video tape of you playing with it.. such a thing of beauty/destruction. wtf?

AUZ - we just got the sink installed today. the kitchen is 98% done and at least the lady can do my dishes now... muahaha. j/k. now we just have to clean it up a bit more and it will soon be time for a TWMAC par-tay at casa vitaly. the workers i had didn't charge very much, but they did half-azzed work and look like they want to punch me now... so i guess it is about time to cease work for a while!!!!!

p.s.s. - wtf was with the weather today? i saw 45mph wind gusts, bizarre snow flurry storm, thunder, bright sunshine, back to wind. fark dat!

    happy 2009 all u TWMAC farkers... and non-TWMAC lurkers!!(drak,30 racquet guy, meg..woo)

I'm down if we can find some time somewhere.

Auzzie - Yeah, Herndon is booked up. Man, I really wish Reston or Fairfax county would build a huge public indoor facility... but that's not happening in this economy.......

Anyone willing to try Rock Creek in DC or Ida Lee in Ashburn????

IIRC - TFM and Raiden are playing Sat or Sun.

    http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?p=2964348&posted=1#post2964348

I'm playing tomorrow, so if I don't get to play Friday, that's ok. Thinking it might be best to take that day off at this point since my ankle and hip both hurt, and I'm playing both singles and doubles this weekend.

I will be ringing in the new year with *drugs*! Yup, that's right! Finally convinced my doctor that being sick since Thanksgiving is enough to warrant antibiotics!

Came home to find that my neighbor had left her keys in the door, so I knocked to let her know...she answered in her underwear! She's French, so I guess that accounts for something, right?

    Happy New Year Boys!

Already strung up and I just have one. If it breaks during our hit be pepared for a Highlander "there can only be one" encounter!

Hit me up on Sup2dresq@aim.com . Of all the members, I don't have your 411 and I don't feel like pulling up your info.

The weather today is fitting. I'm very eager to see the YOTW come to an end. Oh the winds are changing! Oh the winds are changing!!!

    JRS,

In the middle of the summer, I found a property in Herndon I was really considering putting a tennis facility at, including an outdoor european club like setting (bar in the middle of the courts people).

    Cost= $8M
    Bank= Approved, plus investors.
    YOTW=Correct
Stock market after approval = Like Sappy after eating a bowl of prunes.
    Idea during YOTW= Not smart.

"I don't want to talk about it".... but later on a club went for sale in Great Falls for $18M. By then the ability to get loans all dried up.

Rock Creek still owes me 1/2 hour. LOL. Wonder if it expired.

P.S. JRS, alert the alliance that the hero recovered another sword. Send out barrells of mead.

Wow! That would have been cool... but I wonder how the market is treating fitness /tennis facilties right now. My gym just bumped up the rate for my membership (with out notfication grrr.......).

Honestly, I don't think I could afford a private club... a rock-creek like facility in Firfax would be gold!

Glad to see that you have regained the ranks of the knights of Babolat!!!!

BTW- YOTW has officially ended after I had that fender-bender.....

It's usually not the membership fees that get me, it's the court time. When talked to FRC, they said they didn't offer a lot of spot time and were a more "activites" related club, which meant I had to drop close to a grand for court time in a league, etc.

As for sport and health, I've considered joining, but the $100+ monthly fees + court time fees just kill that idea for me.

I like the year that we bought court time in Herndon and split it four ways. It was about $200 for nearly the whole winter for about 1.5 hours every Wed night. Tried to do that this year but we couldn't find a fourth and then someone else bought the spot we wanted.

Don't want to complain to much. Playing USTA and doing a weekly clinic usually gets me my weekly tennis fix in the winter.

If anyone wants to drive to Front Royal, you can get court time for $15 an hour, no membership. Or, pay a small membership fee (can't remember how much) and pay $10 an hour.

The drawback? 45 minute - hour drive, each way, for most of you...

    McLovin,

Just called Ida Lee (http://www.idalee.org/parks/programs/sports/tennis/) - Doesn't look like they have anyhthing open in your time range. They have time open between 6am-10am and 1:30pm-10pm. I didn't make any reservations yet.

Cost is $32/hour - additonal $4 for non-residents. They close 7pm tonight, so I would prob try to make reservations on Thursday if anyone is interested.

Note - no refunds on reservations made within 24 hours of play.

I'm up for some dubs, singles or whatever. I just want to play.

Well, like I said, I could do anytime in the morning. I just threw out 10 because I didn't think anyone else was dumb enough to wake up before then. So, I'd wait & see if Auzzie is available, then go w/ it. I can still do it, but I know he wants to hit w/ my sticks one more time before he makes his decision.

Okay, I'll keep checking the boards and we'll see what happens. I won't make a move to reserve until Thursday afternoon. Maybe something 8:30am-10am wouldn't be too bad. If it's you, me and Auzzie would you want to try to get a 4th? I may know another guy in Ashburn who may want to play.

I'm going home. I'll check back later this PM.
