Ok boys, I'm moving at the end of the month, and I'm trying to figure out my internet/cable situations. I'm wondering if y'all can help me here...

    1. Anybody have Cox? What do you think? The place already has Cox cable and wireless internet. I'm hoping to convince the owner to add the next tier to her service so I can get the Tennis Channel.

    2. There is a cable box on the downstairs TV. However, I will be in the master bedroom, and I would want another box for my TV up there...does Cox (or anybody) let you buy/rent *just* a cable box??? Is it possible to get a cable box that is not from the cable company?

    3. There is wireless in the place. I have an iMac G4 (think the white half dome desktop model)...no wireless built in. What would I have to do to get that to work with wireless? Wireless card? And/or USB wireless adapter?

    4. Thinking I may finally break down and buy a DVD recorder...any recommendations?

    1. I don't have Cox
    2. Yes, you can just rent another cable box and stick it in the room upstairs.
    3. I don't think you can get a wireless card for your G4. I have a G4 laptop with Airport that I could sell to you for next to nothing though.
    4. Why a DVD recorder?

    1. I had Cox before in Falls Church. They are okay, but I MUCH prefer my Verizon Fios TV- though ti may not be available in all areas.

    2. Yes - you can rent another cable box from Cox - they will be more than happy to charge an extra $10/month to have another cable box in the house. You may want to consider getting a Cable box with a DVR, which would solve problem #4....... I also have a TIVO DVR that is just sitting on the shelf. I'd be glad to sell it off. You shouldn't have to pay a monthly fee for programing info as I bought the lifetime package when I bought the box.

    3. What? Why not set up a appointment at genius bar???? ;)
Don't know if Mac allows any 3rd part developers for hardware like that.

    4. IMHO DVR is the way to go. Just rent one from Cox.

I only had to pay an extra $2.00 a month tp Cox to get the Tennis Channel, to which I am now addicted. You get other sports channels in this package too; but I've never checked them out.

Wow guys, thanks for all the feedback!

Question, yeah, I looked at what they already had, and figured it wouldn't be much to add it, and of course, I would pay for it. (there are roommates who dont' want it and wouldn't want to pay for it, of course)

JRK and JRS...let's talk about all this stuff you want to get rid of!

RE the cable box...the thing is, the cable is not set up under my name, I would *just* want the cable box without having any other account or anything like that set up. I sent an email to them regarding it, too.

RE DVD recorder...then I don't have to worry about running out of room and wouldn't have to pay for both a DVR cable box and then the DVR service, too. Though, a Tivo would work, too!

So, JRK and JRS, I'll send you emails in a bit, ok? The money situation isn't great at the moment (scraping and saving for the move) but should improve greatly next month! And I wanted to get a laptop *anyway*, too! :) Thus, the reason I'm moving. Still in NOVA though, so I won't have to hand in my TWMAC card.

    Topaz,

For around $49 bucks, you can buy a cable tv wireless receiver. Run it from the main box to your room.

Hmmmm, but I thought cable companies scrambled signals so something like this wasn't possible? If this really works, that would be perfect!

    Cool.

I have to do a little research, there's some sort of paper work I need to fill out with TIVO about transferring the service of the box to another person when I sell it.

Also - if you rent a COX DVR then you only pay the monthly fee for the box and you don't have to pay for programming info.

Only time you have to pay for programming info is if you buy a DVR that isn't from your cable company.

Another thing to think about with the DVR is alot of then come with two tuners, eltting you watch one channel while recording another or allowing you to record two shows simultaneously.

Also, I'd just ask the roomie/landlord to add the extra box to the service and promise to pay for it - you should need a separate account etc....

Wouldn't the problem for this be that you would have to run down stairs to change the channel or that you could only watch what ever channel was on the box in the other room????? I might be wrong - what do ya say Sup????

I got four racquets to demo* today from TW; I'll probably be hitting with them at Pine Spring Park (where my condo is) on Sunday afternoon, if anyone is interested in taking a look at them:
    Dunlop Areogel 4D 300 Tour
    Prince Exo rebel 95 Mid+
    Prince 03 Speedport Pro WH
    Becker VI OS
Just email me for my phone number.

*Not switching racquets, but just wanted to hit with these for the experience.

Ok, soooo...I should be able to rent a DVR cable box (it is only 5.50 a month) w/o any other service? (and then I'll get her to add TTC and my life will be very happy!) (oh, then I'll buy JRK's laptop, too)

From what I've read on the link Sup provided, the remote enables you to change the channel from wherever you are, but yes...you could only watch whatever channel the original unit is playing...so if someone else is watching it I'd be stuck with that channel.

    Still...something to keep in mind!

Xisbum, thanks for inviting us to hit at FRC. But, I don't appreciate the sharp-angle pass you hit on me while I was at net! That shot was so good that I felt like a dumbfounded, lead-footed Safin.

Rest of the guys, I had a lot of fun. LOL @ my shank overhead that almost beaned JRS. And, Sup, please don't hit the Tsonga forehand anymore. Please pronate. keke.. By the way, Sup, the girl on my avatar does NOT look 15.

That's fine. I have my lesson at 9:00 am tomorrow, so maybe by the time we hit I'll be able to keep the ball in play ;)
Seriously, this coach is doing wonders for me...I am beginning to feel like I may actually be able to play this game.

Ha! You were just shocked that these old legs even got to the ball; anything after that was Twilight Zone stuff.

And while I did admire all those aces you and the Sup pounded by my aging eyes - and they were frequent - I admired more those beautiful volleys you hit, also frequently. I also swooned over those sizzling groundies JRS smacked, especially when he was on my side of the net. :)

And Lady Topaz was worried that Sup might "hurt" us; hey, you steps on the court and you takes your chances. No quarter asked, no quarter expected. We did just fine, thinks I. ;)

P.S. Your avatar looks at least 21 to me. End of discussion.

You know I have to maintain a 3.5 look, as that's what I am.. right? When needed, say a break point or if JRS starts acting like Jolly, I would use the power of greyskull (all PP) to set the record straight.

The doubles was good. I was really having a hard time at the club playing with members and keeping it enjoyable, as well as ending it around the hour. This helps me.. as JRS says.. slum it with the 3.5s.

p.s. shcmad hits it flat, but he did improve his play both on serves(less dfs) and volleys. I tried to imitate his tsonga/shcmad forehand but its kind of tough. I don't hit it as flat.

p.s.s I told you Shcmad that your avatar looks young. If you go see this girl and this guy pops up.. I'm denying I even know you.

Well, I had my lesson this morning and then took to the courts with my son. Playtested the Prince Exo rebel 95 Mid+. It felt like it had no flex at all...which kind of amazes me, given its spec. But it was probably string with poly (no, I am not that good enough to tell, except by feel, and it felt like it was). Monfies may have hit a couple times with it and fallen in love; but it was a few more than that and back into the demo box.

Xisbum knows what he's talkin 'bout! I'll take it! *JR voice*

Curse you Topaz, Hwood, Sups! *shakes fist a la TFM*

Again, it was fun playing with y'all. But it wasn't fun watching Sup not pronate on forehands. You'd have a tough time against J0lly if you keep hitting the Jo-Wilfried forehand.

    Think I confused myself.... HA.....

When I was talking about buying programming for the DVR, I was talking about the scheduling info that you use to schedule recording for your DVR..... sorry about the confusion...... For example, if you buy a brand new TIVO, you have to pay a monthly fee for for the TV scheduling info (think electronic TV guide + software/firmware updates). If you rent a DVR from cox, there's no additional fee for the TV scheduling info (electronic TV Guide + software/firmware updates).

If you want TTC, the it will cost $x amount extra per month.

I hope I cleared that up. Sorry about that

    No, I think I gotchya!

So, I tell Cox (and/or my landlord) that I would like TTC as well as a DVR cable box...and then I'm set? So, I should only have to pay the $$$ for TTC plus the $$$ to rent the box, correct?

Was it fun when most of them went in for a winner or an easy volley for you? Didn't hear you complaining, then again you do think your avatar looks of legal age.

    Shcmad likes them looking young?

P.S. Shcmad thought this girl was too old ... then again he thinks he hits with moderate spin... go figure.

She IS old... for me. She's 30 yrs. old, dude. She may be the right age for you, but for me...that's questionable. Chris Hansen would be like "Please Hyori, have a seat over there. So what exactly are you doing at Shcmad's house?"

Finally got to see the video.

Even though it would really help your net skills, your patent "duck, drop and volley" shot would be lost. That and I think you'll hit yourself in the face if you tried that drill.

And that Hyori Woman looks to me 24 at most. If your old enough to drink beers then youre old enough to not have to worry about a 30yr who looks 24 tops.

That's sick (reaction time/hand-eye coordination) AND has nothing to do about playing with a PD.. or PDR if you prefer. But, who really volleys with two hands off of both sides?

That should be it, assuming the landlord is paying for the cable anyway, just ask him to ask Cox for the TTC and a DVR and you just pay the extra charges for TTC and the DVR.

The only catch I could think of is (I'm not 100% sure here) I think Cox only offers TTC and the DVR with "Digital Cable." If your unit only has standard cable, you might have to work out paying the cost for the upgrade - which basically should just come down to cable costing a little more a month and renting the DVR/Digital Cable or just plain Digital Cable Box ( http://ww2.cox.com/residential/northernvirginia/tv/cable.cox )

Had a polyester leisure suit just that color in the mid 70s. And I could totally grow the hair, too, if I were so inclined.

Word in my mama's family was that we were related to Conway somehow. And my wife is a distant cousin to Billy Ray Smith - a famous BALTIMORE Colt from the day. Of course, my wife and I are also distant cousins, as is the custom in Arkansas. :)

When the Colts left Baltimore, my heart left the NFL. Johnny U was my first sports hero, and I have a #19 Colts jersey. Ate at the Golden Arm one time. I root for the Skins and Jets now; but frankly, Scarlett....

HEY!!! First of all, people are starting to steal my move. Second of all, that makes me want to try it even more. Glutton for punishment?

I think the point is that is one of the drills she does that results in her awesome quickness at net.

Talked to my landlord yesterday...yes, probably going to go with the DVR box (and yes, she already has digital cable, just need one more tier to be added to include TTC). She said 'no problem' and is going to give them a call when we get closer to the move date. Thanks for your help!

He invented the QB position; hold onto that ball! Now, every team that faces an impossibl;e situation with two minutes left to play, knows it can be done because of Unitas.

I invented a new tennis stroke this morning...I call it the 'hail mary'.

While running back for a lob, *completely* turn your back to the net, take your racquet in *both* hands, close your eyes, swing up, pray, turn back around, and win the point when your opponents are so amazed that your ball went in that they can't move!

I would call it 'the Topaz', but I think that is the name we should give my awesome defensive volley!
