Downs...I didn't realize you were on that team! You guys had a great season...I'm friends with someone who had to play against you guys three times! Your captain and I were also on the same 8.0 team, though I don't think he'd know who I am. Congrats!

My 4.0 team finished fourth and then went down 2-3 in the first round of playoffs. :(

But I'll be at VA 3.5 districts, probably at MD 3.5 districts, and possibly mixed sectionals.

I'm tired just thinking about it!

AQ...no, I didn't make it down to Richmond with my VA mixed team. Looooong story, but I ended up playing MD districts that weekend instead. I had hoped to do both, but again...loooong story. Plus one of my partners on the VA team got bumped to 4.0 and my other partner couldn't make it. So I stuck with my MD partner!

adidas got some crazy lookin clothes out for fall! yikes! or YAY if you are 10sBum!!
    -
sup, you should get that Fila Becker polo.. maybe not the jacket though!
    --
i sprained my ankle playing crappy doubles with a crappy partner against some crappy opponents. i was at the net and turned around to watch what kind of horrible shot my partner at the baseline would make and my ankle rolled in my adidas shoes(!) i was right to look maybe cuz he sent some weakazz forehand slice right to the guy at the net who smacked it at me and i got my racquet on it as i was limping out of the way.
didnt know if i could continue playing on it, but i was determined not to get hurt AND lose so i soldiered on. the pain actually went away which was surprising to me. and we WON! woooooo.
thought my foot was going to swell up like a watermellon but it didnt so i went hiking a few days later and slightly rolled my ankle about 10 times causing mild pain.
48hrs after getting hurt on court and 7 hours after hiking it finally swelled up and hurt so bad i couldnt believe it. i really couldnt walk at all. so i iced it on and off all day long and since then it seems fine again. weirdest ankle injury ever!!!
dunno how i won the match.. it wasnt my crappy partner, ill tell u that much!
but i either got focused, mad, or switched to my YY RDIS200 that is strung with Sonic Pro. I think that was the main thing. didnt want to like this string, but i seem to play well with it.
    ---
guess i need to buy some ankle braces and get back on the court. getting bored.
    ----
downs i played dubs against 1 of your opponents (tennislink!) and won by a similar score as you did. he had a fast lefty serve but made too many errors thinking he was nadal. i remember on match point my partner was serving and i asked him to serve it medium pace right to his forehand and i told him i had a feeling he was going to overhit it. one of my best coaching moments when he blasted a forehand wide to end the match!
    good story, eh?
    -----
sharapova, nice serve eh HW? 13 doubles or more? so painful to watch and listen to her shreik. after watching Bartoli vs Lisicki i was about to give lisicki lots of props cuz she was moving great and returning hard shots with interest. seemed totally unlike "the worst tennis match of all time" that sup and topaz and i witnessed with lisucky vs benditova!!!!
    -------
using my XBOX a lot but tired of all the cheaters on COD4. i heard blackops has less hacks, but i dunno.
    ----------
ok, keep enjoying ur summer there TWMAC.

    True. Go Downs!

Our team also went down in the first round of playoff. We ended up playing the only team from our group that we couldn't beat all season. Ask Tennis Monkey - our team finished as a group of walking wounded. Our normal #2 singles player was hurt, so I ended up playing #2. Lost 0-6, 6-4 and hit a short ball into the net at 8-9.

Anyway, working from home today so I'm watching the Wimby semis.

    Wimbledon wrap-up....

Ok, I don't know where to start but the trip across the pond was all that and more. By some fluke, I was able to get Centre Court tix off of Ticketmaster UK for Friday the 24th..they release return tix 48 hours before the match. Then I had Court One Tix for Monday's round of 16..got to see some good matches, including Serena lose to Bartoli, Djokovic and Federer.

The cool thing was that I went around the the outlying courts..saw Djokovic practice...told him it was my birthday and he signed my program and gave me his wristband. Serena was warming up there too....got some great pics. Also got Andrea Petkovic's autograph.

The grounds there are extraordinarily beautiful..and the Pimms rocks..

I'll give out more deets later..suffering from jetlag at the moment.

In honor of my good bud Sup, never wear Adidas in public, except as sweat absorbers after a long match. Besides, these new duds look like Picasso either at the beginning or end of his Cubist period when he was changing his mind-altering substance of choice.

BTW, Sappy wanted me to answer your snarky emoticon with one of my own, something like "Hey, Dats, I heard you got a real job."

But remembering my upbringing as a true southern gentleman, I resisted. :)

Convoy to Memphis leaves Casa de Equis on August 14. Will miss you guys. *sniff*

Any of you dudes gonna buy the re-issue PS85s? 150 aint a bad price for em.

I would buy the Vacuum 90's first if it were me. Its too bad they put Pacific PJs on them though instead of the originals.

    Joe Pesci is the man.

I met my sisters boyfriend when I was like 12 years old. I had the old school sweat pant on and a hoody. Its was like 40 degrees outside.

He told me I looked like the Super, I looked at him like a fool. He then brought the movie over and I understood what he meant. We had basically the same outfit.

My 4.0 team ended up that way. I know of at least four women on the team that had some kind of injury or another.

And same story on my MD team, where I was only supposed to play 5 matches. I'm up to 10...so far...season still isn't over!!! But two other singles players are injured/MIA.

Depth will count at Districts. The schedule...and the conditions...are brutal. They are not kidding about hydrating yourself before, during and after. Here's what I can share:

    • Hard Courts -- As hard as hard can get. Not sure what you play on at home (we've got a Rebound-look alike on our main outdoor courts...but our indoor surface is similar)...but the ball skids. Big time.
    • Little or No Shade -- If someone on your crew has a pop-up tent, you might want to bring it. It provides a central gathering spot and some precious shade.
    • No place to "cool down" -- In addition to no shade and lots of hardtop, the bathrooms are small and not air-conditioned. There's a small "pro shop" (or what passes for one) with a little A/C...but don't count on it. Last year, they set up a pop-up tent frame and hung sprinkler heads from it. Nice spray but won't really cool you down. Most folks end up driving around in their vehicles with the A/C blasting.
    • No locker room or showers -- to cool down or wash up it. Bring a change of shirt/clothes if you want any hope of not getting your car all stunk up. (Let's just hope you didn't stink up the courts too :p ).
    • No nearby restaurants. A fast-food joint or two down Mercury Blvd...(lock your doors and don't dilly-dally) but not much else. That said, The Crab Shack just down by the River is about as good as seafood gets in that area (but please, no comparisons to NoVA and Maryland. It's sad that us VAs just don't get it sometimes.)
    • No nearby hotels. Well, there are, but you wouldn't be caught alive there unless you're destitute or a junkie. The "Host" hotel is in another area for a reason. It's nice...but also a ~15-20 min drive away depending on traffic. Luckily, because it's an urban area, there are many ways to get to and from said hotel.
    • Team Shirts -- Mostly on the ladies side, but don't be surprised to see "Team Shirts" and a lot of Rah-Rah stuff. Some teams remind me of HS a bit. But it's all in fun.
    • Hot -- Did I mention it would be hot. Hotter'n'hell. Humid'na'Sauna. Combination. Deadly. There's a reason an EMS vehicle just sits there every afternoon. Last year, a fellow teammate's husband, who is an MD, came with his IV kit. Didn't have to use it on any of us...but was just about ready to on someone else...till a second EMS unit showed up. The first..was already transporting someone to a hospital.
    • Afternoon Showers -- All the late afternoon matches are subject to rainouts/delays.
    • Top Competition -- That's a given. Everyone is there for a reason. Used to be, you could write off the teams from the far-flung places in the Commonwealth (like Roanoke, Lynchburg and such). But not anymore. The top players on the top teams...could easily survive in the next level up (and often already do).

Again, congrats and I hope you and your team have a great time. Save up the stories for a good TWMAC debrief. Topaz and I will try to do the same. :)

    Dats,

    Lemme know dude.

As far as nike outlet up here goes I was in there about a month or so ago and they had some nice dri-fit longsleeves for 10 bucks. They were not tennis specific but it was a pretty good dea. The Tennis selection at that store has always been bleak. They also have a nike outlet in Arundel Mills mall now which is close to BWI. they are bigger and probabaly have better selection.

Gamma Supreme no overlap sounds serious. I havent hit since april so Im extra scared, I mean no overlap That big time.

Downs...is this your first districts trip?

During our weekend the guys are playing at ODU. You may be there instead of Huntington.

There are a few more places within walking distance of the host hotel to eat...it is an area they are building up a bit. There is a great Italian place too, called Joe and Nimma's...I want to say it is on mercury but I'm not sure.

We are trying to have a team dinner at the crabshack Thursday night.

And yeah...just about every team has 'base camp' set up somewhere. Tent/canopy, chairs, and blankets are a must!

And I think AQ covered this a bit...but it is usually really HOT!!! ;)

Double oops on my part, Downs. Forgot you boys were over at ODU. Situation much different over there. Hear that, if you get pushed inside, they even have A/C. Ahhhhh.

Confusion (and stupidity) on my part stems from last year...when the guys finished up (on Sunday) over at Huntington. My brain is still fried from those hot days.

Also kinda dumb on my part to assume you'd never been. To make it in your first USTA season evah! That, dude, is assume.

Topaz and I et al. will be the ones sufferin' over at Huntington.

this is crazy! we lost our trip to nationals last year because one of my teammates had to get taken to the hospital for cramping in the extreme heat on court despite being a couple points from the match in the decider :(

Only if they get pushed indoors. And I really need to double check my sources.

But I think they do have access to the restrooms...with A/C. ;)

lol! Too bad Auzzie's teammate last year didn't look at playing in the heat like he does - otherwise, he'd have relished it and took care not to have any cramping issues. Right Auzzie? But not everyone can be that crazy in the heat like Auz... ::twisted:

hah, I always loved playing in the muggy, unbearable heat in DC (especially on clay)! I miss it  ... but I am in no position to even try to tell my former teammate what he should do on a court- he had an ATP ranking back in the day and got bumped to 5.0

feeling surprisingly calm that i am unable to buy racquets every week here... i miss getting to try new PaulOne demoes everytime we hit:cry:

if i didnt have a broken toe and a high ankle sprain (advanced dog walking injuries), i would challenge all of you 5.2 level players to a match.

hopefully i can test my infirmities against the HW up in his hood this weekend.
(and then eat a large pizza and guzzle some nattybos)

    downs, good luck dooood!
r u still using cut down POGLBs? tourbite? wut is the secret to your success?
(are u using "no overlap" method too? that is the bomb! wut about kareem serve??)

I'm not sure about all the other stuff, he'll have to tell you about it himself.

But, part of the secret to his success, was actually to stop buying new frames and sticking with one he liked! That, in itself, bumped his playing level easily half a USTA point. Good stuff Downs!

Kareem serve sounds liek a serious weapon you have added to your repetoire. Kareem Serve + No Overlap + twisted wrister = supreme domination. Im scared.

I gotta work satruday until noon but after that Im game man. I usaully go Disc Golfin on Sunday mornings but that can be skipped. We can go to lighted courts about 15 minutes away if you want to hit later at night.

a lil modest, P-man... you created excalibur, bestowed it upon Downs, and now Downs is unstoppable (besides an extremely lengthy 1 match losing streak that happened once ;))

    Downs,

    You owe me beer.

I unfortunately have given up on my drinking while playing tennis (and drunk while playing tennis) days. That surprisingly increased my winning percentage from 0%. Who would of "thunk" it.

That is all. Good luck Downs.

Hahaha! You're too much Auzzie! He already had his Excalibur! The only thing was - since it wasn't polished, shiny, and sharp he didn't care if it was cut in half or thrown to the wayside. So a little bit of elbow grease and TLC - he found out it wasn't so bad after all...lol

    Paulman,

Are you asian? I have been telling the asian and asian lite players to stop the demos and just stick to one racquet. Upon def ears. Then I tried to get them drunk and tell them, but the asian "glow" works to quickly for reason to set.

So if you are asian, that must of been the trick. Now if we can only find a fellow ukrainian TWMAC member.

P.S. To quote my friend Moz (and Erasmus)...."In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king"...

I don't know nothing about the one eyed man, but not everyone can be as cool as me and have awesome old school T Fight 325 that weigh 13oz that they never use.

I used to demo a little bit here and there, but it never got serious. I guess I just got luck and found one that I liked and stocked up.
